We run into each other again in a staff meeting. We look into each others eyes. Coldly professional I say hello. And then I cannot help to add "we know each other". You reply yes, "as friends". I nod.
The pamphlets in the walls say the philosophy department will host a series of lectures.
You're to give one on divinity. I slip into the room when the lecture has started. I keep my eyes low and move carefully. I bring out my laptop and type notes the whole session, not taking my eyes off the screen. I leave before the questions and answers.
I'm at home, by night. I take my laptop out in the darkened living room. I put it on the couch and look through the window. There's nothing outside.
The next day a colleague approaches me in a hall. She asks who will I vote for as Department Head. Both you and Z are running. "Z just returned from Germany. They will debate next Thursday, 6pm, in room 302". I thank her.
On Thursday I stand within my empty classroom. I grab my books and leave, passing through the rows of vacant seats.
I make it to room 302 and sit in the back. Z's speaking but I just look at you. Then you speak and the audience becomes more attentive. I quickly exit the room.
I get into my car and drive to my apartment. Once inside, I go over my notes. I open wide the window and jump out. My body's on the ground and the notes in the laptop read "conforming to God's will".
