Gerard's Plan is put into play.
“No, nothing that drastic. Unless you want me to?”
I shook my head no, then I would never get her back if we got caught.
“I sent Ray over to talk to him. They seemed to have gotten close while making the short about Patrick. I sort of anticipated his reaction.”
“Do you think Ray can get through to him?”
“We’ll just have to see.”
My cell just went off and I look at the number, it’s Gerard.
“You there?” asked the voice on the other line.
“Yeah how did it go?”
“Badly very badly, she never got to tell him that she gave Emily up?”
“Fuck, well I’ll see what I can do from here.”
“You know I hate putting you in the middle Ray.”
“It’s okay Gee, Bob’s too stubborn for his own good sometimes, besides I want Lyss to get her daughter back. It’s the right thing. I see him pulling up now. I’ll let you guys know what happens.”
I watched as Bob stepped out of his car, and walk towards me. “What are you doing here.”
“I figured you would need a friend, and I need to talk to you.”
“I know I’m being an ass about not wanting to support my kid,” he said as we walked into the house. “But fuck Ray, she never told me.”
“She never really told anyone.”
“I won’t lie I was with her when she took the pregnancy test. I’m the only one that knew besides her parents.”
“Why didn’t you fucking tell me.”
“It was a secret back then and once she gave her up, it didn’t matter.”
“What do you mean gave her up?”
“Her parents were powerful and influential and very christian. They made her give her daughter up.”
“I have a little girl?”
“Her name is Emily.”
“When’s her birthday?”
“The end of May.”
“So when I was going through all that shit, she was having my baby. I might not have been going through that shit had I known.”
“That’s not true Bob, don’t you get it even after all these years. Alyssa and Gerard belong together. What she did to you that night was cruel, I warned her not to play with your heart.”
“So why now? What is it, part of some twelve step program. Isn’t that one of them making amends to those you harm.”
“That may be part of it. There’s also something else.”
“She want to get her baby back.”
“And me to support her, right?”
“No. She wants you to help her get her back.”
“Why the fuck should I do that, that bitch has caused me nothing but pain and now she wants me to help her?”
“Bob just help her get her kid back and then you can walk away.”
“No, I’m not doing it Ray. The kid is probably better off where she is, instead of being raised by two junkies.”
“They’ve been clean for a while now.”
“Until the next time they get high. Besides let them go make their own babies.”
“She can’t have any more kids.”
“Well then too bad for them. Way isn’t getting my kid.”
“It’s Alyssa’s kid too. She’s the one that’s lived with all the pain of the past seven years.”
“Not my fault,” he screamed.
Then I decided to do the one thing I warned Lyss not to do. “Do you love her?”
“That’s a stupid question.”
“I mean really love her.”
“She needs Emily.”
“Emily is better off where she is.”
“Lyss thinks she’s being abused.” I watched as the demeanor in Bob's face change. I knew exactly what buttons to push and hated myself for pushing them.
“If the kid is really being abused, I’ll help her. No kid deserves that. I should know.”
“Dig deep, because he can hide things. He’s a well respected pediatrician.” I took out a piece of paper from my pocket and handed it to him. “Here’s what you need to know.”
I watched as Ray left then stared at the piece of paper in front of me. Yeah I’ll have it looked into, not that it really matters because I know what I’m going to do. The only thing I can do. I love Lyssa and I want her to be happy so I’m gonna help her get her kid, even if it means she and Way will be raising it.
I took out my phone and dialed a number after a few rings there was an answer.
“Hey Dave, it’s me Bob. I need you to check on something. I need you to check on a doc, he might be abusing his kid. His name is Lawrence Howell he’s at Mount Sinai. I’d like the info as soon as possilbe. Yeah I know the fee. Thanks man.”
If I’m to help Lyssa I need to know everything possible about the man.
Gerard and I sat there on the porch waiting for Ray. I hope he has some good news. Gerard put his arms around me and smiled, “It’ll be okay you’ll see.”
“What if he won’t help?”
“I’m still willing to kidnap her,” he smiled at me.
I rolled my eyes knowing he was joking, but it was sweet for him to say that to me. Our eyes met and we stared at each other for what seemed an eternity then he grabbed me by the back of the neck and pulled me in for a kiss. A kiss whose intensity we haven’t shared in over eight years.
He lips slowly moved down my neck as I gave a slight moan and spoke, “Oh god Gerard.”
“Let’s go inside,” he smiled.
“Gee I’m not ready for that.”
“Neither am I, but I know it’s driving you crazy just waiting for Ray. I thought we could watch some tv or play a game of D&D.”
“You still playing?”
“But of course, though a different edition.”
“Well it’s been a while.”
“I’ll go easy on you.”
“Remind me to kill Ray for forgetting to turn his phone back on,” I smiled weakly. I knew if Ray’s phone was off the news wouldn’t be good. I only pray that I’m wrong.
