Chapter 2 - Runaway prince
"Father what are you shouting about?" Kai drawled
Serena heard her breath hitch, everyone in the room turned to look at her, she looked down and blushed and mumbled something about hiccups
"Your father" the Queen struggled to sit up and Serena rushed to help her "Thank you Serena, is angry that your grandfather is coming"
Kai stayed silent, he wanted to agree with his father, but he couldn't his mother was ill and he refused to make it worse...even if it meant him being at discomfort. He adored his mother
"Voltaire...ARGH" David kicked the bed stand, and ignored the waves of pain over his foot. Devlin gave a smile, unnoticed smirk.
Kai sat on the velvet clad bed, next to his mother who smiled and took his hand. He gave a small rather cold smile. Natalya sighed so like his father, yet unlike him in so many more ways
"I see both of you don't want him here" Natalya said sadly...a little too sadly...David sighed she had got them "Well it's too let he's on his way!" she smiled
Kai groaned inwardly, David let out another cry of anger. Natalya let out a stifled giggle.
"Natalya, why?" David looked pained "This visit will only end in tears"

"Serena" Lila snapped at her, the brown haired girl looked slightly pissed as her friend wouldn't answer her
"Yes, Lila?"
"When is Voltaire to arrive?"
"I don't know" Serena frowned, the past few days had been...dismal, people were rushing to get everything ready and also try not to irritate a very ticked off king. The good china had been stored and the gold cutlery had been released. Most stone floors were now covered in velvety rugs, which Serena had to admit were a bit nicer than her bed. Lila was to share her room with her to make room for Voltaire's million and one servants (not literally but you get my drift). Lila sighed and plonked herself on Serena's bed.
"I hate Voltaire, he gives me the creeps"
At that moment there was a sharp knock on the door and immediately the person entered
"Lady Devlin" the two younger girls echoed as they bowed
"For goodness sakes Serena I can see your assets!"
Serena blushed she was in her undergarments not bloody naked, she stumbled to put on her dressing robe.
"Voltaire arrives tomorrow in the morning; there will be a royal welcome for him. Be there" she didn't need to add the 'or else' the girls need what would happen if they didn't show up. Devlin turned swiftly and left the room as quickly as she entered it. The girls let out a sigh as if they had been holding their breath for ages.
"There's another one that creeps me out" Lila said
"Oh gold your ton-SHUT UP!" Serena blurted, she went closer to Lila "she scares me too but it doesn't stop her from eavesdropping!" she whispered
"Serena!" Lila said after a while. The girl had changed into their night garments, and a light dress robe "I'm bored"
"Read or something" Serena called from in front of the fire
"Argh! I'm hungry" Lila moved
"You're always hungry" Serena replied, she had read that sentence twice now.
"C'mon...let's go to the kitchen!" Lila giggled, Serena moaned as she felt Lila's footsteps draw nearer. Lila pulled on Serena's arm and gown causing her to get up
"Fine!" Serena walked towards the door and held it open for Lila "Wait!!" she ran back and grabbed the bedside candle
"Ok let's go!"
The two girls turned the corner from the Lady-in-waiting's quarter and saw it was quite light...and stiflingly hot. Serena raised a brow as they passed a blazing fire. No doubt warming up the castle in preparation for Voltaire. She wrinkled her nose as she thought how disgusting it was people fussed over an old...bastard like Voltaire.
"What are you sniffing at?"
"Nothing, nothing"
Lila led her down the warm corridors, and down the great hall. They ignored the lingering glances of the night guards and continued freely to the kitchen. They came to the door that led to the kitchen and both girls had to push hard to open the heavy metal door. Lila gave a mock cackle and rubbed her hands together
"Right what do you want?"
"Nothing, Lila" Serena replied with a cat like grin "unlike you I can not eat for more than three hours"
"Suit yourself" Lila shrugged, she walked towards the other candles and lit a few unlike the rest of the castle the kitchen fires were not lit.
"Ooh, left over meat" she sniffed at it "Its still good!" she pulled out a knife and cut a chuck off, she took some cheese, bread and a few tomatoes.
"Are you sure you don't want anything, because you can't have none of mine" Lila warned
Serena laughed and nodded and gestured for the girl to come. The girls turned and starting the walk back to Serena's room.
"Lila you shouldn't eat on the g-"
Lila frowned, Serena was staring straight ahead in shock, so she turned to see what had shocked her friend
"Kai"
"Prince Kai to you" he snapped at Lila
"PRINCE Kai" she added scathingly
Serena's mouth was hanging slightly; Kai was wearing a robe and silk trousers and was bare-chested. Serena eyes gazed his toned chest, she saw the ripple of a six pack forming, she never realised his shoulders were so muscled and wide...
"Stop drooling" Lila nudged, true enough Serena felt saliva (eew...) run down her chin, she rubbed it off and coughed
"Erm Prince Kai"
"Serena why are you such an idiot?"
"I...don't know, your majesty"
"Whenever I talk to you, you seem incapable of saying a simple sentence"
Serena blushed furiously and gulped. Harsh. Lila raised an eyebrow, just because this...young man was born with a golden dummy in his mouth, it didn't make him better than anyone else.
'it's true' Serena thought ' why am I so stupid?' tears surfaced and ran down her smooth skin
"Goodnight your majesty" her voice caught in her throat, she coughed and walked away
"I hope your happy" Lila said to Kai quietly as she followed an upset Serena, Kai folded his arms and smirked

Serena splashed water over her face and kept her hands there for a few more moments. Her face had been burning with embarrassment since yesterday and it didn't seem the sensation would go down. She put on her second best dress; her first one being one for special occasions...Voltaire wasn't that special. She rushed down to the dinner hall for servants, she was also late.
"Serena, how you feeling?"
"Better" she said she took a bowl of soup from the cook hands and walked towards an empty bench, Lila followed behind her. Serena began to eat, she looked up and Lila's green eyes were staring at her.
"What?"
"Must everything you do be so graceful?"
"I don't...know!" Serena cringed
"Whatever!" Lila put a hat on her blonde hair "Must be off, Devlin will go mad, you better hurry up!"
"I'll come now" Serena scooped up one more spoonful of soup and jogged well, quickly walked after Lila.

"Well Kai are you ready?" said the head of servants, Marcel
Kai inspected himself in the mirror, he was wearing dark blue silk breeches, a white shirt and a long cloak to go with it, and brown riding boot made of the softest, most expensive leather. Only fit for a prince.
Kai nodded and waved Marcel away, he didn't need to be fussed over he would turn eighteen in a few weeks and was of marrying age. He didn't want to get married all the ladies he had met so far were idiots and frankly he thought none of them were good enough for them. He went out to his balcony and looked out below were the palace grounds, he saw the last of the servants finalising things...fussing...the idiots. His eyes passed the walls and onto the streets of Dranzer, it looked busy, people looked happy. Kai had left the palace, of course. He never found anything to do outside it that was fun, once he had gone with his parents for a royal procession. That was fun...not. Waving at peasants who tried to touch him with their grubby hands, no. He only ventured outside to go hunting. He turned to where a noise was being made. He saw Tzera (Ze-ra), ugly creatures, they were often quite tall in stature ranging from 5 ft 11 to 7 ft, they had greyish skin, and all their eyes were black, even were the where the whites of the eyes should be they were black. Many of them were pierced either at the nose, eyebrows, ears, mouth....sometimes all the places. Kai's stomach churned his grandfather had arrived. Only he insisted on using these heavy-tempered people as guards.
"Kai?" he turned and his father was looking at him
"He's here" Kai said slowly
"I know" his father placed his arms on Kai's shoulders "Keep your...mouth closed don't do this for me...it's for your mother"
Kai gave somewhat of a sulky look and nodded "yes father"
David smiled and lowered his hands; Kai followed him out of the room. He heard his father shuffling ahead. Kai kept his eyes to the floor. His father led him down the main stairs, Kai straightened himself and walked past the small multitude of ready servants, he was Serena who blushed and was scowled at by the small blonde girl. He placed himself next to his mother who was currently sitting
She stood up and smiled "you look handsome Kai" and she planted a kiss on his cheek, Kai returned the smile and looked forward. Slowly the huge doors opened and the Tzera came in first. It was like a shadow came over the palace, it went dark slightly and everyone remained silent. They marched in a straight line and stopped at the foot of the stairs. Everyone but the King held their breath. Voltaire stepped in his cold black eyes scanned the crowd awaiting him. His longish grey hair swept behind him. He stayed still and everyone still remained quiet
Kai's eyes narrowed at the sight of his grandfather
"Father" Natalya stepped forward and curtsied "I hope your journey was pleasant" she spoke as if he was any elder but her father.
"Yes" he said smartly
"Voltaire" David had a stare-down with Voltaire, who simply looked away; Voltaire began staring at Kai, whose eyes had turned into mere slits.
"Kai, well you have grown"
'That's what people do' he thought, he grudgingly bowed "Good day...grandfather"

"So David" Voltaire said from across the table, it was covered in all sorts of delicious food: juicy meats, ripe fruit, soft bread and cheeses and sweets of all sorts. Kai had eaten till he felt sick...because if he was eating he had an excuse not to talk to his grandfather. David was at one end of the table, his chair high and imposing. Voltaire was at the opposite end inspecting his many bejewelled fingers. Kai and Natalya were at the middle directly opposite each other. Kai smiled when his mother gave the occasional wink. She didn't act like a critically ill woman.
After a moment's silence David replied "Yes Voltaire"
"You're still running this kingdom" Voltaire said, as if he was surprised. Kai was startled and started choking on his cheese and even his mother choked a little on her wine. Ouch low blow by Voltaire
"Well" David said, obvious that he was trying to suppress anger "that was a king does"
"I know, but honestly I mean you were a peasant, a kitchen boy. I'm surprised the courts haven't overthrown you"
"The courts are advisors, not rulers; and also I don't have to take their advice Voltaire"
"Of course not" Voltaire took another sip of wine; he looked at Kai who suddenly found an interest in the surroundings, of the dinning hall. Tapestries hung down coating the walls and a huge fire cackled
"Naturally Kai is of marrying age"
"Yes" Natalya interrupted sending a look her husband's way
"Well is he courting?" Voltaire demanded from his daughter
"No, I'm not" said a miffed Kai. He was in the room, the least Voltaire could do was ask him the question.
"Well, father like son"
"What's that meant to mean?" Kai burst out
"Well" Voltaire took another sip, if Kai was ten feet away from the man he would have snatched that goblet put of his hands. Voltaire inspected the golden cup and put it down
"Well? Tell me!" Kai asked in a raised tone
"Kai" she mother warned
"I demand to know!"
Voltaire bolted up straight "You will treat me with respect, I am the king!" he snapped at Kai
"YOU WERE THE KING!" David shouted standing up as well
"Sire!" two Tzera burst in "Are you alright?"
"Yes, yes go" he flicked away
"Why my daughter married you I don't know" Voltaire added scathingly
"Well" David said loosing some of his royal charm "if you wanted to insult us you could have done it with it a letter would have saved time and energy!"
Both men were leaning forward at this point. Voltaire let out a laugh "You fool!"
Kai looked at his mother, were those tears? He wasn't sure...the fire was beginning to die down and also she had her head down. He leaned forward to comfort her but his father did something which would probably go down in Dranzer history
"Fuck off, you Bastard" he said in a calm tone
Voltaire turned red "You call me, the king who built the Merry canals a...a..."
"Bastard" David filled in for him "Sorry the peasant talk was slipping through" the Merry canals was a huge system of canals which connected the city of Dranzer to many other towns nearby. It was quite ingenious but David wasn't going to tell him that.
"Oh don't forget to fuc-" David was cut short as Natalya slipped off her chair and landed with a thud
"Natalya!" he rushed forward his tone soothing "it's ok, it's ok" he stroked her forehead "Kai, get someone!"
Kai got out of his seat and saw Marcel walk past
"Marcel go get a doctor...NOW!"
The podgy man nodded and began to run, well really waddle away. Kai turned and saw a fuming Voltaire storm out. He followed him to the foot of the stairs where he was met by Lady Devlin. Voltaire said something to her and she looked shocked. Kai turned back.
"I'll be fine" the queen croaked "just a little stressed"

"Did you hear?" Lila said running towards Serena
"No" Serena shook her head "What happened?"
"The King told Voltaire to..." she looked around and said in a whisper "...to fuck off"
Serena's eyes widened with genuine shock "Really? Lila, do not lie to me! Are you serious?"
"Yes!" Lila laughed "The man after my heart! But the Queen fainted too apparently!"
"What?" Serena shuddered: they never had so much excitement in one night...
"Yeah" Lila replied "I do hope she's ok"
"She will be" Serena reassured her "the queen is strong, she'll be fine" Serena put down her needlepoint as Lila sat down. Lila grinned
"Go King David"
"Yes, but I have a feeling this might backfire on him and his family" Serena said, Lila gave her a weird look
"He only said fuck off! No big deal! I mean who is petty enough to take revenge over two measly words! Oh did I tell you he called him a bastard too?"
"What?" Serena shook her head in confusion "he called him that too!"
"Yeah" Lila had an even wider grin on her face

Kai took off his cloak, it was a horrid velvet thing he had to wear to special occasions and he hated it. He laid it carelessly on the chair and stripped and got into bed. He turned and closed his eyes, and tried to sleep. After what seemed like an eternity he opened his eyes he hadn't slept and he didn't know the time. He listened hard but couldn't hear any movements. It was most likely everyone had gone to sleep. He rolled over and tried again but he still couldn't sleep. He kept thinking about his father's words, good for father but Kai had a horrible feeling in his stomach that it wasn't a good idea. He got up slowly, the muscles in his stomach crease up he leaned forward. He closed his eyes and stayed quiet. He couldn't hear noises yet, there was light shining from underneath his door. He pulled on a robe and opened his door, it was light inside the castle, Kai found it moderately warm and began to venture out. He began a walk to the stables; he would visit Dranzer (his rather wrongly named horse). Kai started to turn to the corner to go towards the west wing when he heard footsteps. He growled and back against the wall, he prayed the person walked past him and they did. When he turned to see who it was he was slightly surprised: it was Devlin. The old woman was in a hurry to get where she was going. Kai waited for her to go a few feet further and then slipped out after her, she went down the west wing stairs
'Taking her sweet time' Kai thought impatiently
She walked through the corridor into the main landing and back towards the east wing stairs as she reached the stairs she turned, Kai as quick as a flash bolted towards the nearest coat of arms and hid behind it: She didn't want anyone to follow her. Kai waited and held his breathe. As soon as he held footsteps he began to follow her again. Finally she stopped in front of a door
"Grandfather" Kai muttered to himself, Devlin entered and Kai sprinted as quickly and as quietly as he could towards the door, stopping it before it shut completely.
"Mi'lord" Devlin bowed
"Ah, Katrina How are you?"
"Good your graciousness" Devlin simpered
"Well, were you followed?" Voltaire demanded, Kai didn't need to see who was talking he just knew
"No your lordship"
"Well? Is the plan in place?"
"Yes your majesty"
"Well and the subject in question?"
More shuffling "He is currently asleep, we will carry out the capture tomorrow just before dawn...he will be alone by then"
Who? Kai frowned, it couldn't be his mother, she definitely wasn't a he and Voltaire couldn't be that cruel to capture his own daughter. It was between him and his dad...but his dad slept next to his mother like any husband did with his wife...it had to be...
"Will the subject be...disposed?" said Devlin searching for her words carefully
"We'll threaten him" said another voice. This time the voice sounded young, almost playful...yet it had a coldness to it.
"If he doesn't agree, we kill him"
"Who are you?" Devlin demanded
"I am the leader of Voltaire's Tzera and his main bodyguard" but Kai didn't stay to hear that.

"Lila" Serena moaned "Did I oversleep again"
"YES!" Lila yelled
Serena bolted upright and looked at her friend's green eyes were full of worry but her face didn't show it
"What happened?" Serena asked
Lila looked at her unsure whether to say
"Lila, tell me" Serena demanded
"It's Kai" Lila said slowly

Serena rushed into the monarch chambers with Lila on her heels she dusted herself down and appeared in the room like nothing had happened, she saw a sight. This queen was up a finger pointed at Devlin her eyes wide, her mouth snarling
"WHERE. IS. MY. SON?????"
"Your highness" Devlin clucked
"Don't you cluck at me!" Natalya snapped "get out!"
Devlin frowned, and stepped
"GET OUT!"
Devlin made another clucking noise and turned on her heel and left, Natalya took a deep breathe and lay back in her bed
"Serena" the queen gestured her closer "Please ask what's happened. Lila please bring me food, I am hungry"
"Yes, your highness" the girls said together
Serena hitched up her skirt and ran down to the war room by the servant dinner hall. She opened the door and slipped in
"It is not like kai to run away" David said
The commander looked at him doubtfully "Well, yes you highness but I suggest we triple the security on you and the queen anything coul- YOU!" he pointed a finger at Serena what do you want"
"The Q-"
"Serena?" David said his eyes on her; he remembered seeing her a lot by his wife's side "Please could this wait?"
"Well the queen wanted to know...what's happening" she finished quietly
"We don't know"
Serena saw the flash pf impatience that was often in Kai's eyes but soon it was replaced by worry.
"Well, ask around the servants maybe they've heard something"
Serena nodded. Asked by the King AND queen to find out about their son. She walked out and looked around. Guards marching in, people running round frantically. If she knew Kai, he wouldn't be in Dranzer, he hated the place...he'd be gone far away.
'How could you be so selfish Kai?' she thought

Lila turned and saw Rachel a girl a little younger than her run towards her.
"Not more bad news" Lila sighed openly
"I just saw Serena ride away"
"She probably went to clear her head" Lila sighed, she didn't need an update. She had been running round for hours and she was hungry and so tired

Kai inspected himself in the mirror, he was wearing dark blue silk breeches, a white shirt and a long cloak to go with it, and brown riding boot made of the softest, most expensive leather. Only fit for a prince.
Kai nodded and waved Marcel away, he didn't need to be fussed over he would turn eighteen in a few weeks and was of marrying age. He didn't want to get married all the ladies he had met so far were idiots and frankly he thought none of them were good enough for them. He went out to his balcony and looked out below were the palace grounds, he saw the last of the servants finalising things...fussing...the idiots. His eyes passed the walls and onto the streets of Dranzer, it looked busy, people looked happy. Kai had left the palace, of course. He never found anything to do outside it that was fun, once he had gone with his parents for a royal procession. That was fun...not. Waving at peasants who tried to touch him with their grubby hands, no. He only ventured outside to go hunting. He turned to where a noise was being made. He saw Tzera (Ze-ra), ugly creatures, they were often quite tall in stature ranging from 5 ft 11 to 7 ft, they had greyish skin, and all their eyes were black, even were the where the whites of the eyes should be they were black. Many of them were pierced either at the nose, eyebrows, ears, mouth....sometimes all the places. Kai's stomach churned his grandfather had arrived. Only he insisted on using these heavy-tempered people as guards.
"Kai?" he turned and his father was looking at him
"He's here" Kai said slowly
"I know" his father placed his arms on Kai's shoulders "Keep your...mouth closed don't do this for me...it's for your mother"
Kai gave somewhat of a sulky look and nodded "yes father"
David smiled and lowered his hands; Kai followed him out of the room. He heard his father shuffling ahead. Kai kept his eyes to the floor. His father led him down the main stairs, Kai straightened himself and walked past the small multitude of ready servants, he was Serena who blushed and was scowled at by the small blonde girl. He placed himself next to his mother who was currently sitting
She stood up and smiled "you look handsome Kai" and she planted a kiss on his cheek, Kai returned the smile and looked forward. Slowly the huge doors opened and the Tzera came in first. It was like a shadow came over the palace, it went dark slightly and everyone remained silent. They marched in a straight line and stopped at the foot of the stairs. Everyone but the King held their breath. Voltaire stepped in his cold black eyes scanned the crowd awaiting him. His longish grey hair swept behind him. He stayed still and everyone still remained quiet
Kai's eyes narrowed at the sight of his grandfather
"Father" Natalya stepped forward and curtsied "I hope your journey was pleasant" she spoke as if he was any elder but her father.
"Yes" he said smartly
"Voltaire" David had a stare-down with Voltaire, who simply looked away; Voltaire began staring at Kai, whose eyes had turned into mere slits.
"Kai, well you have grown"

Voltaire was at the opposite end inspecting his many bejewelled fingers. Kai and Natalya were at the middle directly opposite each other. Kai smiled when his mother gave the occasional wink. She didn't act like a critically ill woman.
After a moment's silence David replied "Yes Voltaire"
"You're still running this kingdom" Voltaire said, as if he was surprised. Kai was startled and started choking on his cheese and even his mother choked a little on her wine. Ouch low blow by Voltaire
"Well" David said, obvious that he was trying to suppress anger "that was a king does"
"I know, but honestly I mean you were a peasant, a kitchen boy. I'm surprised the courts haven't overthrown you"
"The courts are advisors, not rulers; and also I don't have to take their advice Voltaire"
"Of course not" Voltaire took another sip of wine; he looked at Kai who suddenly found an interest in the surroundings, of the dinning hall. Tapestries hung down coating the walls and a huge fire cackled
"Naturally Kai is of marrying age"
"Yes" Natalya interrupted sending a look her husband's way
"Well is he courting?" Voltaire demanded from his daughter
"No, I'm not" said a miffed Kai. He was in the room, the least Voltaire could do was ask him the question.
"Well, father like son"
"What's that meant to mean?" Kai burst out
"Well" Voltaire took another sip, if Kai was ten feet away from the man he would have snatched that goblet put of his hands. Voltaire inspected the golden cup and put it down
"Well? Tell me!" Kai asked in a raised tone
"Kai" she mother warned
"I demand to know!"

"YOU WERE THE KING!" David shouted standing up as well
"Sire!" two Tzera burst in "Are you alright?"
"Yes, yes go" he flicked away
"Why my daughter married you I don't know" Voltaire added scathingly
"Well" David said loosing some of his royal charm "if you wanted to insult us you could have done it with it a letter would have saved time and energy!"
Both men were leaning forward at this point. Voltaire let out a laugh "You fool!"
Kai looked at his mother, were those tears? He wasn't sure...the fire was beginning to die down and also she had her head down. He leaned forward to comfort her but his father did something which would probably go down in Dranzer history
"Fuck off, you Bastard" he said in a calm tone
Voltaire turned red "You call me, the king who built the Merry canals a...a..."
"Bastard" David filled in for him "Sorry the peasant talk was slipping through" the Merry canals was a huge system of canals which connected the city of Dranzer to many other towns nearby. It was quite ingenious but David wasn't going to tell him that.
"Oh don't forget to fuc-" David was cut short as Natalya slipped off her chair and landed with a thud
"Natalya!" he rushed forward his tone soothing "it's ok, it's ok" he stroked her forehead "Kai, get someone!"
Kai got out of his seat and saw Marcel walk past
"Marcel go get a doctor...NOW!"
The podgy man nodded and began to run, well really waddle away. Kai turned and saw a fuming Voltaire storm out. He followed him to the foot of the stairs where he was met by Lady Devlin. Voltaire said something to her and she looked shocked. Kai turned back.
"I'll be fine" the queen croaked "just a little stressed"

"The King told Voltaire to..." she looked around and said in a whisper "...to fuck off"

"Yes!" Lila laughed "The man after my heart! But the Queen fainted too apparently!"
"What?" Serena shuddered: they never had so much excitement in one night...
"Yeah" Lila replied "I do hope she's ok"
"She will be" Serena reassured her "the queen is strong, she'll be fine" Serena put down her needlepoint as Lila sat down. Lila grinned
"Go King David"
"Yes, but I have a feeling this might backfire on him and his family" Serena said, Lila gave her a weird look
"He only said fuck off! No big deal! I mean who is petty enough to take revenge over two measly words! Oh did I tell you he called him a bastard too?"

Kai took off his cloak, it was a horrid velvet thing he had to wear to special occasions and he hated it. He laid it carelessly on the chair and stripped and got into bed. He turned and closed his eyes, and tried to sleep. After what seemed like an eternity he opened his eyes he hadn't slept and he didn't know the time. He listened hard but couldn't hear any movements. It was most likely everyone had gone to sleep. He rolled over and tried again but he still couldn't sleep. He kept thinking about his father's words, good for father but Kai had a horrible feeling in his stomach that it wasn't a good idea. He got up slowly, the muscles in his stomach crease up he leaned forward. He closed his eyes and stayed quiet. He couldn't hear noises yet, there was light shining from underneath his door. He pulled on a robe and opened his door, it was light inside the castle, Kai found it moderately warm and began to venture out. He began a walk to the stables; he would visit Dranzer (his rather wrongly named horse). Kai started to turn to the corner to go towards the west wing when he heard footsteps. He growled and back against the wall, he prayed the person walked past him and they did. When he turned to see who it was he was slightly surprised: it was Devlin. The old woman was in a hurry to get where she was going. Kai waited for her to go a few feet further and then slipped out after her, she went down the west wing stairs
'Taking her sweet time' Kai thought impatiently
She walked through the corridor into the main landing and back towards the east wing stairs as she reached the stairs she turned, Kai as quick as a flash bolted towards the nearest coat of arms and hid behind it: She didn't want anyone to follow her. Kai waited and held his breathe. As soon as he held footsteps he began to follow her again. Finally she stopped in front of a door
"Grandfather" Kai muttered to himself, Devlin entered and Kai sprinted as quickly and as quietly as he could towards the door, stopping it before it shut completely.
"Mi'lord" Devlin bowed
"Ah, Katrina How are you?"
"Good your graciousness" Devlin simpered
"Well, were you followed?" Voltaire demanded, Kai didn't need to see who was talking he just knew
"No your lordship"
"Well? Is the plan in place?"

"Well and the subject in question?"
More shuffling "He is currently asleep, we will carry out the capture tomorrow just before dawn...he will be alone by then"
Who? Kai frowned, it couldn't be his mother, she definitely wasn't a he and Voltaire couldn't be that cruel to capture his own daughter. It was between him and his dad...but his dad slept next to his mother like any husband did with his wife...it had to be...
"Will the subject be...disposed?" said Devlin searching for her words carefully
"We'll threaten him" said another voice. This time the voice sounded young, almost playful...yet it had a coldness to it.
"If he doesn't agree, we kill him"
"Who are you?" Devlin demanded
"I am the leader of Voltaire's Tzera and his main bodyguard" but Kai didn't stay to hear that.

"Don't you cluck at me!" Natalya snapped "get out!"

"GET OUT!"
Devlin made another clucking noise and turned on her heel and left, Natalya took a deep breathe and lay back in her bed
"Serena" the queen gestured her closer "Please ask what's happened. Lila please bring me food, I am hungry"
"Yes, your highness" the girls said together
Serena hitched up her skirt and ran down to the war room by the servant dinner hall. She opened the door and slipped in
"It is not like kai to run away" David said
The commander looked at him doubtfully "Well, yes you highness but I suggest we triple the security on you and the queen anything coul- YOU!" he pointed a finger at Serena what do you want"

"Serena?" David said his eyes on her; he remembered seeing her a lot by his wife's side "Please could this wait?"
"Well the queen wanted to know...what's happening" she finished quietly
"We don't know"
Serena saw the flash pf impatience that was often in Kai's eyes but soon it was replaced by worry.
"Well, ask around the servants maybe they've heard something"
Serena nodded. Asked by the King AND queen to find out about their son. She walked out and looked around. Guards marching in, people running round frantically. If she knew Kai, he wouldn't be in Dranzer, he hated the place...he'd be gone far away.

"Father what are you shouting about?" Kai drawled
Serena heard her breath hitch, everyone in the room turned to look at her, she looked down and blushed and mumbled something about hiccups
"Your father" the Queen struggled to sit up and Serena rushed to help her "Thank you Serena, is angry that your grandfather is coming"

"I see both of you don't want him here" Natalya said sadly...a little too sadly...David sighed she had got them "Well it's too let he's on his way!" she smiled

"Natalya, why?" David looked pained "This visit will only end in tears"

The good china had been stored and the gold cutlery had been released. Most stone floors were now covered in velvety rugs, which Serena had to admit were a bit nicer than her bed. Lila was to share her room with her to make room for Voltaire's million and one servants (not literally but you get my drift). Lila sighed and plonked herself on Serena's bed.
"I hate Voltaire, he gives me the creeps"
At that moment there was a sharp knock on the door and immediately the person entered
"Lady Devlin" the two younger girls echoed as they bowed
"For goodness sakes Serena I can see your assets!"
Serena blushed she was in her undergarments not bloody naked, she stumbled to put on her dressing robe.
"Voltaire arrives tomorrow in the morning; there will be a royal welcome for him. Be there" she didn't need to add the 'or else' the girls need what would happen if they didn't show up. Devlin turned swiftly and left the room as quickly as she entered it. The girls let out a sigh as if they had been holding their breath for ages.
"There's another one that creeps me out" Lila said
"Oh gold your ton-SHUT UP!" Serena blurted, she went closer to Lila "she scares me too but it doesn't stop her from eavesdropping!" she whispered
"Serena!" Lila said after a while. The girl had changed into their night garments, and a light dress robe "I'm bored"
"Read or something" Serena called from in front of the fire

"You're always hungry" Serena replied, she had read that sentence twice now.

The two girls turned the corner from the Lady-in-waiting's quarter and saw it was quite light...and stiflingly hot. Serena raised a brow as they passed a blazing fire. No doubt warming up the castle in preparation for Voltaire. She wrinkled her nose as she thought how disgusting it was people fussed over an old...bastard like Voltaire.
"What are you sniffing at?"

Lila led her down the warm corridors, and down the great hall. They ignored the lingering glances of the night guards and continued freely to the kitchen. They came to the door that led to the kitchen and both girls had to push hard to open the heavy metal door. Lila gave a mock cackle and rubbed her hands together
"Right what do you want?"
"Nothing, Lila" Serena replied with a cat like grin "unlike you I can not eat for more than three hours"
"Suit yourself" Lila shrugged, she walked towards the other candles and lit a few unlike the rest of the castle the kitchen fires were not lit.
"Ooh, left over meat" she sniffed at it "Its still good!" she pulled out a knife and cut a chuck off, she took some cheese, bread and a few tomatoes.
"Are you sure you don't want anything, because you can't have none of mine" Lila warned
Serena laughed and nodded and gestured for the girl to come. The girls turned and starting the walk back to Serena's room.

Kai took off his cloak, it was a horrid velvet thing he had to wear to special occasions and he hated it. He laid it carelessly on the chair and stripped and got into bed. He turned and closed his eyes, and tried to sleep. After what seemed like an eternity he opened his eyes he hadn't slept and he didn't know the time. He listened hard but couldn't hear any movements. It was most likely everyone had gone to sleep. He rolled over and tried again but he still couldn't sleep. He kept thinking about his father's words, good for father but Kai had a horrible feeling in his stomach that it wasn't a good idea. He got up slowly, the muscles in his stomach crease up he leaned forward. He closed his eyes and stayed quiet. He couldn't hear noises yet, there was light shining from underneath his door. He pulled on a robe and opened his door, it was light inside the castle, Kai found it moderately warm and began to venture out. He began a walk to the stables; he would visit Dranzer (his rather wrongly named horse). Kai started to turn to the corner to go towards the west wing when he heard footsteps. He growled and back against the wall, he prayed the person walked past him and they did. When he turned to see who it was he was slightly surprised: it was Devlin. The old woman was in a hurry to get where she was going. Kai waited for her to go a few feet further and then slipped out after her, she went down the west wing stairs
'Taking her sweet time' Kai thought impatiently
She walked through the corridor into the main landing and back towards the east wing stairs as she reached the stairs she turned, Kai as quick as a flash bolted towards the nearest coat of arms and hid behind it: She didn't want anyone to follow her. Kai waited and held his breathe. As soon as he held footsteps he began to follow her again. Finally she stopped in front of a door
"Grandfather" Kai muttered to himself, Devlin entered and Kai sprinted as quickly and as quietly as he could towards the door, stopping it before it shut completely.
"Mi'lord" Devlin bowed
"Ah, Katrina How are you?"
"Good your graciousness" Devlin simpered
"Well, were you followed?" Voltaire demanded, Kai didn't need to see who was talking he just knew
"No your lordship"
"Well? Is the plan in place?"
"Yes your majesty"
"Well and the subject in question?"
More shuffling "He is currently asleep, we will carry out the capture tomorrow just before dawn...he will be alone by then"
Who? Kai frowned, it couldn't be his mother, she definitely wasn't a he and Voltaire couldn't be that cruel to capture his own daughter. It was between him and his dad...but his dad slept next to his mother like any husband did with his wife...it had to be...
"Will the subject be...disposed?" said Devlin searching for her words carefully
"We'll threaten him" said another voice. This time the voice sounded young, almost playful...yet it had a coldness to it.
"If he doesn't agree, we kill him"
"Who are you?" Devlin demanded
"I am the leader of Voltaire's Tzera and his main bodyguard" but Kai didn't stay to hear that.

"Lila" Serena moaned "Did I oversleep again"
"YES!" Lila yelled
Serena bolted upright and looked at her friend's green eyes were full of worry but her face didn't show it
"What happened?" Serena asked
Lila looked at her unsure whether to say
"Lila, tell me" Serena demanded
"It's Kai" Lila said slowly
Serena frowned
"He's gone"

Serena rushed into the monarch chambers with Lila on her heels she dusted herself down and appeared in the room like nothing had happened, she saw a sight. This queen was up a finger pointed at Devlin her eyes wide, her mouth snarling
"WHERE. IS. MY. SON?????"
"Your highness" Devlin clucked
"Don't you cluck at me!" Natalya snapped "get out!"
Devlin frowned, and stepped
"GET OUT!"
Devlin made another clucking noise and turned on her heel and left, Natalya took a deep breathe and lay back in her bed
"Serena" the queen gestured her closer "Please ask what's happened. Lila please bring me food, I am hungry"
"Yes, your highness" the girls said together
Serena hitched up her skirt and ran down to the war room by the servant dinner hall. She opened the door and slipped in
"It is not like kai to run away" David said
The commander looked at him doubtfully "Well, yes you highness but I suggest we triple the security on you and the queen anything coul- YOU!" he pointed a finger at Serena what do you want"
"The Q-"
"Serena?" David said his eyes on her; he remembered seeing her a lot by his wife's side "Please could this wait?"
"Well the queen wanted to know...what's happening" she finished quietly
"We don't know"
Serena saw the flash pf impatience that was often in Kai's eyes but soon it was replaced by worry.
"Well, ask around the servants maybe they've heard something"
Serena nodded. Asked by the King AND queen to find out about their son. She walked out and looked around. Guards marching in, people running round frantically. If she knew Kai, he wouldn't be in Dranzer, he hated the place...he'd be gone far away.
'How could you be so selfish Kai?' she thought

Lila turned and saw Rachel a girl a little younger than her run towards her.
"Not more bad news" Lila sighed openly
"I just saw Serena ride away"
"She probably went to clear her head" Lila sighed, she didn't need an update. She had been running round for hours and she was hungry and so tired
"But she was in travelling gear"
"DAMNIT" Lila yelled, then quietly "Serena don't go after him"

Chapter 2 - Runaway prince
"Father what are you shouting about?" Kai drawled
Serena heard her breath hitch, everyone in the room turned to look at her, she looked down and blushed and mumbled something about hiccups
"Your father" the Queen struggled to sit up and Serena rushed to help her "Thank you Serena, is angry that your grandfather is coming"
Kai stayed silent, he wanted to agree with his father, but he couldn't his mother was ill and he refused to make it worse...even if it meant him being at discomfort. He adored his mother
"Voltaire...ARGH" David kicked the bed stand, and ignored the waves of pain over his foot. Devlin gave a smile, unnoticed smirk.
Kai sat on the velvet clad bed, next to his mother who smiled and took his hand. He gave a small rather cold smile. Natalya sighed so like his father, yet unlike him in so many more ways
"I see both of you don't want him here" Natalya said sadly...a little too sadly...David sighed she had got them "Well it's too let he's on his way!" she smiled
Kai groaned inwardly, David let out another cry of anger. Natalya let out a stifled giggle.
"Natalya, why?" David looked pained "This visit will only end in tears"

"Serena" Lila snapped at her, the brown haired girl looked slightly pissed as her friend wouldn't answer her
"Yes, Lila?"
"When is Voltaire to arrive?"
"I don't know" Serena frowned, the past few days had been...dismal, people were rushing to get everything ready and also try not to irritate a very ticked off king. The good china had been stored and the gold cutlery had been released. Most stone floors were now covered in velvety rugs, which Serena had to admit were a bit nicer than her bed. Lila was to share her room with her to make room for Voltaire's million and one servants (not literally but you get my drift). Lila sighed and plonked herself on Serena's bed.
"I hate Voltaire, he gives me the creeps"
At that moment there was a sharp knock on the door and immediately the person entered
"Lady Devlin" the two younger girls echoed as they bowed
"For goodness sakes Serena I can see your assets!"
Serena blushed she was in her undergarments not bloody naked, she stumbled to put on her dressing robe.
"Voltaire arrives tomorrow in the morning; there will be a royal welcome for him. Be there" she didn't need to add the 'or else' the girls need what would happen if they didn't show up. Devlin turned swiftly and left the room as quickly as she entered it. The girls let out a sigh as if they had been holding their breath for ages.
"There's another one that creeps me out" Lila said
"Oh gold your ton-SHUT UP!" Serena blurted, she went closer to Lila "she scares me too but it doesn't stop her from eavesdropping!" she whispered
"Serena!" Lila said after a while. The girl had changed into their night garments, and a light dress robe "I'm bored"
"Read or something" Serena called from in front of the fire
"Argh! I'm hungry" Lila moved
"You're always hungry" Serena replied, she had read that sentence twice now.
"C'mon...let's go to the kitchen!" Lila giggled, Serena moaned as she felt Lila's footsteps draw nearer. Lila pulled on Serena's arm and gown causing her to get up
"Fine!" Serena walked towards the door and held it open for Lila "Wait!!" she ran back and grabbed the bedside candle
"Ok let's go!"
The two girls turned the corner from the Lady-in-waiting's quarter and saw it was quite light...and stiflingly hot. Serena raised a brow as they passed a blazing fire. No doubt warming up the castle in preparation for Voltaire. She wrinkled her nose as she thought how disgusting it was people fussed over an old...bastard like Voltaire.
"What are you sniffing at?"
"Nothing, nothing"
Lila led her down the warm corridors, and down the great hall. They ignored the lingering glances of the night guards and continued freely to the kitchen. They came to the door that led to the kitchen and both girls had to push hard to open the heavy metal door. Lila gave a mock cackle and rubbed her hands together
"Right what do you want?"
"Nothing, Lila" Serena replied with a cat like grin "unlike you I can not eat for more than three hours"
"Suit yourself" Lila shrugged, she walked towards the other candles and lit a few unlike the rest of the castle the kitchen fires were not lit.
"Ooh, left over meat" she sniffed at it "Its still good!" she pulled out a knife and cut a chuck off, she took some cheese, bread and a few tomatoes.
"Are you sure you don't want anything, because you can't have none of mine" Lila warned
Serena laughed and nodded and gestured for the girl to come. The girls turned and starting the walk back to Serena's room.
"Lila you shouldn't eat on the g-"
Lila frowned, Serena was staring straight ahead in shock, so she turned to see what had shocked her friend
"Kai"
"Prince Kai to you" he snapped at Lila
"PRINCE Kai" she added scathingly
Serena's mouth was hanging slightly; Kai was wearing a robe and silk trousers and was bare-chested. Serena eyes gazed his toned chest, she saw the ripple of a six pack forming, she never realised his shoulders were so muscled and wide...
"Stop drooling" Lila nudged, true enough Serena felt saliva (eew...) run down her chin, she rubbed it off and coughed
"Erm Prince Kai"
"Serena why are you such an idiot?"
"I...don't know, your majesty"
"Whenever I talk to you, you seem incapable of saying a simple sentence"
Serena blushed furiously and gulped. Harsh. Lila raised an eyebrow, just because this...young man was born with a golden dummy in his mouth, it didn't make him better than anyone else.
'it's true' Serena thought ' why am I so stupid?' tears surfaced and ran down her smooth skin
"Goodnight your majesty" her voice caught in her throat, she coughed and walked away
"I hope your happy" Lila said to Kai quietly as she followed an upset Serena, Kai folded his arms and smirked

Serena splashed water over her face and kept her hands there for a few more moments. Her face had been burning with embarrassment since yesterday and it didn't seem the sensation would go down. She put on her second best dress; her first one being one for special occasions...Voltaire wasn't that special. She rushed down to the dinner hall for servants, she was also late.
"Serena, how you feeling?"
"Better" she said she took a bowl of soup from the cook hands and walked towards an empty bench, Lila followed behind her. Serena began to eat, she looked up and Lila's green eyes were staring at her.
"What?"
"Must everything you do be so graceful?"
"I don't...know!" Serena cringed
"Whatever!" Lila put a hat on her blonde hair "Must be off, Devlin will go mad, you better hurry up!"
"I'll come now" Serena scooped up one more spoonful of soup and jogged well, quickly walked after Lila.

"Well Kai are you ready?" said the head of servants, Marcel
Kai inspected himself in the mirror, he was wearing dark blue silk breeches, a white shirt and a long cloak to go with it, and brown riding boot made of the softest, most expensive leather. Only fit for a prince.
Kai nodded and waved Marcel away, he didn't need to be fussed over he would turn eighteen in a few weeks and was of marrying age. He didn't want to get married all the ladies he had met so far were idiots and frankly he thought none of them were good enough for them. He went out to his balcony and looked out below were the palace grounds, he saw the last of the servants finalising things...fussing...the idiots. His eyes passed the walls and onto the streets of Dranzer, it looked busy, people looked happy. Kai had left the palace, of course. He never found anything to do outside it that was fun, once he had gone with his parents for a royal procession. That was fun...not. Waving at peasants who tried to touch him with their grubby hands, no. He only ventured outside to go hunting. He turned to where a noise was being made. He saw Tzera (Ze-ra), ugly creatures, they were often quite tall in stature ranging from 5 ft 11 to 7 ft, they had greyish skin, and all their eyes were black, even were the where the whites of the eyes should be they were black. Many of them were pierced either at the nose, eyebrows, ears, mouth....sometimes all the places. Kai's stomach churned his grandfather had arrived. Only he insisted on using these heavy-tempered people as guards.
"Kai?" he turned and his father was looking at him
"He's here" Kai said slowly
"I know" his father placed his arms on Kai's shoulders "Keep your...mouth closed don't do this for me...it's for your mother"
Kai gave somewhat of a sulky look and nodded "yes father"
David smiled and lowered his hands; Kai followed him out of the room. He heard his father shuffling ahead. Kai kept his eyes to the floor. His father led him down the main stairs, Kai straightened himself and walked past the small multitude of ready servants, he was Serena who blushed and was scowled at by the small blonde girl. He placed himself next to his mother who was currently sitting
She stood up and smiled "you look handsome Kai" and she planted a kiss on his cheek, Kai returned the smile and looked forward. Slowly the huge doors opened and the Tzera came in first. It was like a shadow came over the palace, it went dark slightly and everyone remained silent. They marched in a straight line and stopped at the foot of the stairs. Everyone but the King held their breath. Voltaire stepped in his cold black eyes scanned the crowd awaiting him. His longish grey hair swept behind him. He stayed still and everyone still remained quiet
Kai's eyes narrowed at the sight of his grandfather
"Father" Natalya stepped forward and curtsied "I hope your journey was pleasant" she spoke as if he was any elder but her father.
"Yes" he said smartly
"Voltaire" David had a stare-down with Voltaire, who simply looked away; Voltaire began staring at Kai, whose eyes had turned into mere slits.
"Kai, well you have grown"
'That's what people do' he thought, he grudgingly bowed "Good day...grandfather"

"So David" Voltaire said from across the table, it was covered in all sorts of delicious food: juicy meats, ripe fruit, soft bread and cheeses and sweets of all sorts. Kai had eaten till he felt sick...because if he was eating he had an excuse not to talk to his grandfather. David was at one end of the table, his chair high and imposing. Voltaire was at the opposite end inspecting his many bejewelled fingers. Kai and Natalya were at the middle directly opposite each other. Kai smiled when his mother gave the occasional wink. She didn't act like a critically ill woman.
After a moment's silence David replied "Yes Voltaire"
"You're still running this kingdom" Voltaire said, as if he was surprised. Kai was startled and started choking on his cheese and even his mother choked a little on her wine. Ouch low blow by Voltaire
"Well" David said, obvious that he was trying to suppress anger "that was a king does"
"I know, but honestly I mean you were a peasant, a kitchen boy. I'm surprised the courts haven't overthrown you"
"The courts are advisors, not rulers; and also I don't have to take their advice Voltaire"
"Of course not" Voltaire took another sip of wine; he looked at Kai who suddenly found an interest in the surroundings, of the dinning hall. Tapestries hung down coating the walls and a huge fire cackled
"Naturally Kai is of marrying age"
"Yes" Natalya interrupted sending a look her husband's way
"Well is he courting?" Voltaire demanded from his daughter
"No, I'm not" said a miffed Kai. He was in the room, the least Voltaire could do was ask him the question.
"Well, father like son"
"What's that meant to mean?" Kai burst out
"Well" Voltaire took another sip, if Kai was ten feet away from the man he would have snatched that goblet put of his hands. Voltaire inspected the golden cup and put it down
"Well? Tell me!" Kai asked in a raised tone
"Kai" she mother warned
"I demand to know!"
Voltaire bolted up straight "You will treat me with respect, I am the king!" he snapped at Kai
"YOU WERE THE KING!" David shouted standing up as well
"Sire!" two Tzera burst in "Are you alright?"
"Yes, yes go" he flicked away
"Why my daughter married you I don't know" Voltaire added scathingly
"Well" David said loosing some of his royal charm "if you wanted to insult us you could have done it with it a letter would have saved time and energy!"
Both men were leaning forward at this point. Voltaire let out a laugh "You fool!"
Kai looked at his mother, were those tears? He wasn't sure...the fire was beginning to die down and also she had her head down. He leaned forward to comfort her but his father did something which would probably go down in Dranzer history
"Fuck off, you Bastard" he said in a calm tone
Voltaire turned red "You call me, the king who built the Merry canals a...a..."
"Bastard" David filled in for him "Sorry the peasant talk was slipping through" the Merry canals was a huge system of canals which connected the city of Dranzer to many other towns nearby. It was quite ingenious but David wasn't going to tell him that.
"Oh don't forget to fuc-" David was cut short as Natalya slipped off her chair and landed with a thud
"Natalya!" he rushed forward his tone soothing "it's ok, it's ok" he stroked her forehead "Kai, get someone!"
Kai got out of his seat and saw Marcel walk past
"Marcel go get a doctor...NOW!"
The podgy man nodded and began to run, well really waddle away. Kai turned and saw a fuming Voltaire storm out. He followed him to the foot of the stairs where he was met by Lady Devlin. Voltaire said something to her and she looked shocked. Kai turned back.
"I'll be fine" the queen croaked "just a little stressed"

"No" Serena shook her head "What happened?"
"The King told Voltaire to..." she looked around and said in a whisper "...to fuck off"
Serena's eyes widened with genuine shock "Really? Lila, do not lie to me! Are you serious?"
"Yes!" Lila laughed "The man after my heart! But the Queen fainted too apparently!"
"What?" Serena shuddered: they never had so much excitement in one night...
"Yeah" Lila replied "I do hope she's ok"
"She will be" Serena reassured her "the queen is strong, she'll be fine" Serena put down her needlepoint as Lila sat down. Lila grinned
"Go King David"
"Yes, but I have a feeling this might backfire on him and his family" Serena said, Lila gave her a weird look
