Its been about half a year since I started high school. It was February and the Jersey air was still cold, but warming up, getting ready for Spring. I had found myself a great little group of friends, Frank, Mikey, Gerard and Ray. I hung out with Frank and Mikey more, because they were in a few of my classes at school, but Gerard and Ray had already left school and Gerard was set to go to an Art college in New York so I would see even less of him than I do now. I was pretty bummed about that.

However, I was having fun being a teenager, getting up to mischief and just hanging out with my friends. My parents' death still itched in the back of my mind but I didn't need to cry myself to sleep anymore.

Speaking of sleeping.

"Frank, you're on my leg." I whispered.
"Sorry." He whispered back. "It would easier if you let me sleep at the top of the bed, y'know."
"I know, but I just feel weird sharing a bed with my best friend, so my mind is at ease this way." I replied.

About two hours ago we were having a movie night. Aunt Jess decided it would be ok for her, Gerard, and Ray to have a few beers with her, not thinking that there would be no one to drive everyone home. (I could drive but Aunt Jess didn't want me driving around at night, and to be honest, after being in a car crash, driving at night didn't appeal to me either.) Gerard and Ray weren't such a problem they were both 22 but Mikey and Frank needed permission to stay over. So, Ray was on the couch downstairs (where he passed out), Mikey and Gerard were in my brother's old room, (which, by the way bothered me a lot because we hadn't exactly cleared everything out yet.) and Frank was in my room. Luckily, I had a double bed.

"What were you thinking about before?" He asked.
"Before, you looked like you were thinking really hard." Frank said.
"Oh, I was just thinking about things."
"What kind of things?"
"Um, just stuff, like how long its been since I met you guys, my parents, and my brother. I was thinking how strange it'll be when Gerard goes to college." I told him.
"Yeah, that will be strange. But we can visit him and he'll come here to visit his parents so, he'll have no choice not see us." Frank let out a little evil giggle. I laughed too. We were quiet for a minute. I thought Frank had maybe fallen asleep but then he started talking again.

"What were your parents like?" He asked.
"Pretty average. Except they were very strict when it comes to family stuff. Like this one time, my brother wanted to go to this party at his friend's house but my dad said no, because it was family night. Every Friday we would go out, have some pizza then catch a movie. Then we would come home and just talk about stuff. My brother tried to sneak away for the party, and my dad got so mad at him. Later on, I told my dad that he was just growing up and he would have to go through the same thing when I reached that age." Tears filled my eyes from thinking about them so much.
"What was your brother's name?" Frank asked. "I don't think you've mentioned it before."
"Benjamin. We called him Ben, or Benny." I replied. "We never talked about him much after he died. It was too painful for all of us."
"Its good you're talking about him now."
"Yeah, but it still hurts." I sobbed. "Sorry, I was trying not to cry."
"Its ok, you're allowed to cry!" Frank said. He moved up the bed and snuggled closer to me. He wrapped his arms around me and cradled me like I was a baby. I never noticed how strong his arms was. He always looked skinny-ish in his school uniform. "I actually admire you for not crying every time we mention our parents or families, cause it must nearly kill you to see us happy with our families."
"It did at first, but not anymore." I replied. "I've only known you guys for about six months, and I already love you all so much and you welcomed me into your own little family. When I first met you, I could already tell you were so close." Frank smiled down on me.

There was a light tap on the door. Frank kind of set me and aside and Gerard, Mikey and Ray walked in.

"Is everything ok?" I asked them. They all came in and shut the door.
"Well, I woke up and wasn't sure where I was..." Ray said sheepishly.
"And we woke up and heard you guys talking and we though 'hey, lets all stay up and talk!'" Gerard said. He was rather shirtless and looking rather good. Mikey had only taken off his jeans and Ray was still in his clothes. I noticed that Frank had done the same as Mikey. Me, I was in really girly pyjamas. With teddy bears on them. How cool am I?
"Are you crying, Nancy?" Mikey asked.
"I was, but I'm alright now." I replied. "Lets go downstairs, I'll make us some hot chocolate."

We all went downstairs quietly, so we didn't wake up Aunt Jess and into the kitchen. The cold laminate flooring certainly woke us all up a bit more than we already were.

I got us some hot chocolate and we all sat around the kitchen table, except, Gerard decided to stand against the counter, in his half nakedness.

"What were you guys talking about?" Ray asked me and Frank.
"I was just telling Frank about my family." I replied. "But, if you guys don't mind, I'd rather not talk about them at the moment. Its still a little emotional for me, as we found out."
"Yeah lets talk about something different." Frank said.

And we did, Gerard and Mikey shared stores of their childhood with us and Ray told us a bit about his family. Then Frank told us about his childhood. He was an only child and he was a realy ill child. And his parents divorcing didn't help him out that much.

"I kinda wish I could see my dad more. I only stay with him on weekends." Frank concluded. I was totally engrossed in his story. In all their stories. I loved learning about them.
"What time is it?" Gerard asked, who had now joined us at the table. Ray looked at his watch.
"It's 6AM." Ray mumbled.
"Hey! You know what we should do?!" I exclaimed.
"Get some sleep?" Mikey replied.
"We should go watch the sunrise! I know a great little spot!" I replied. I told them about this place where me and Aunt Jess had driven one day to watch the sunrise, then we spent all morning cleaning. It was a fun day until the cleaning started.
"Wait, won't we need to drive there?" Ray asked.
"Oh yeah" I replied. Well screw that idea.
"I'm pretty sober." Gerard said, while scratching the back of his head. "I mean I only had two beers and I've drank a lot of hot chocolate since then. I could probably drive, providing someone keeps an extra eye on the road."
"Alright! Lets do it!" Frank said. He stood up and clapped his hands together.

We all hurried back upstairs to get dressed, apart from Ray who went to the bathroom instead. I was the first one back downstairs, and I decided to tie up my unwashed hair into a high ponytail. I went into the sitting room to find a hair tie, there were usually a few lying around.
Once I had found one, I stretched it out a bit to loosen it out a bit. I didn't realise it was quite an old one and it snapped and one of the ends hit my finger.

"Ow!" I moaned.
"What happened?" I turned around and saw Gerard had come into the room.
"Stupid hair tie snapped." I replied. Gerard came over to me and lifted my fingers to his face. He examined my finger for a moment.
"I think you'll live." He whispered. And then he did something I did not expect. He kissed my fingers and then the back of my hand. "You have beautiful eyes." I swallowed hard.
"I do?" I asked him. He nodded and grinned at me.

He let my hand go then he was out of the room in a flash. I breathed slowly then continued to find another hair tie. Once I had found one, I tied my hair into a really tight ponytail in actually started to hurt a little.

I found the rest of the guys in the kitchen, Frank was writing on a piece of paper, Mikey was making some coffee and Ray was looking in the cupboards. I decided not to look at what Gerard was doing.

"What's going on?" I asked.
"I'm just writing a note for Aunt Jess, in case she wakes up and thinks we're all kidnapped or something." Frank said.
"Do you have like a flask or something we could put coffee in?" Ray asked.
"Yeah, in the cupboard under the sink." I replied. "There's two in there." Everyone continued with their tasks and I continued not looking at Gerard.

Once we were all in the car, Gerard was driving, Frank was in the front seat making sure he was sober enough to drive, Ray had fallen asleep in the back, Mikey was sitting in the middle and I was slowly falling asleep on his shoulder.
"Hey are you sleeping?" Mikey teased me.
"Just because you've had like a tonne of coffee." I mumbled. Mikey laughed.
"Look at you all cute and grumpy!" Frank said with a laugh. I opened my eyes and glared at everyone.
"I think I just need some coffee." I replied. Mikey reached down and pulled up a flask. He opened it up handed me the flask. I took a couple sips of the hot coffee and sighed.

"We're nearly there." Gerard said a couple of minutes later.
"Oh good." I said. "Then we can all go to bed."
"This was your idea!" Frank said.
"I know but, I didn't realise how tired I actually was." I replied. We drove for a few more minutes before Gerard stopped the car.

"Here we are kiddies." Gerard said. Ray and Mikey got out but I was still sort of asleep in the car. "Nancy!" Gerard knocked on the car window.
"I'm getting there." I mumbled. The door opened and I unbuckled the seat belt. Gerard held out his hand for me. I took his hand and he helped me out of the car.
"Do you want me to carry you?" He asked. "You can barely walk."
"No, no I'm fine." I murmured but before I knew it, I was hauled up in the air. "Aah!" Gerard laughed. Suddenly I was fully awake and not amused. But then I found myself looking directly into Gerard's eyes. I never realised how lovely they were. He stared back at me. Maybe thinking the same thing about my eyes. If this were a movie, nice romantic music would be playing right now.

"Come on you guys!" Ray yelled. They we re all sat on top of the little hill we had to climb. Gerard began moving and I wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Gerard, why did you kiss my hand before?" I asked in a whisper.
"I don't know" He whispered back.
"Do you like me?"
"Do you like me?"

We reached Frank, Mikey and Ray just in time. Gerard set me down and I scurried around to sit next Frank.
"I'm stealing your warmth!" I told him. He laughed. I saw Gerard sit down next to Mikey out of the corner of my eye. The sun came up slowly, filling the skies with orange, yellow and pink. It was beautiful. It reminded me of when I would wake up in the back of the car, and see the sunrise on the move. That was a simpler time in my life. There was no school, no conflict. And no sudden confusing feelings about my best friend.
