For fear of silence, people make conversation.

They talk, creating mindless chatter.

They talk, creating mindless, mind numbing chatter so that they do not have to really think.

...Because thoughts can be cruel.

They can be harsh and disturbing and sick and irrational.

No matter how fleeting, thoughts can break you.

So we talk to each other about small things like the weather and current events just to escape our own minds and avoid the dark cesspool lurking inside.

Despite how hard you might try to push a thought out of your head, it never leaves.

You may not feel it, but it’s there.

Slinking around in the caves we call minds, waiting for the moment to strike.

Waiting for that one moment of sweet, blissful silence where it will encompass you entirely and send you spiraling down into the harsh reality of yourself.

We are our own worst enemies.

This is why we live.

This is why we talk.
