  well james was an auror, wasn't he? maybe he had to go on a mission because of that or because of an order mission to gather information? maybe some vamps were on voldie's side and they thought they could find something out about them through questioning an isolated vampire?

  Tanis could be a squib ancestor of Harry's, James went to his family vaults after his folks died and found that the man was still alive thanks to the family tapistry or some such...
