I never truly saw Zack until that night. Something was weighing heavily on the those broad shoulders but I couln't see it. I could feel it but Zack's eyes were still as cheerful and vibrant as ever. No one seemed to notice the odd shadows that danced in those sparkling purple eyes every so often. So that night followed him beyond the doors of Shinra and watched.

Zack was staring into the darkness. Slowly he began to sing. "Hidden by darkness these diamond bars hold me captive. Many call me free as they watch me ascend but these diamond bar only go so far. I try to break free but no one hears my cries of sorrow. Shall I be here forever held by diamond bar? I want to be free, free of these diamond bars that hold me prisoner. But my screams go unheard behind these diamond bars..."

I heard Zack fall silent. He felt caged? But why? Zack was a free man. He could do as he liked. "Zack?"

I watched him slowly turn. Those burdened purple eyes met my own haunted green gaze. "Lo, Seph." He said softly.

Gone was the loud mouthed SOLDIER 1st. In his place was a sad eyed man. "Why Zack?"

He didn't need an explanation, he already understood. He smiled a soft, sad, understanding smile. "Just because one seems free doesn't mean they are not caged."

Then I understood. Zack was caged like I was. Caged behind the glittering diamond bars.

I never told him how much he meant to me as a friend because he already knew, he always knew. And just like back then he smiles at me. That same soft, sad, understanding smile that tells me he knows. And as I cut him down I know that he sees the diamond bars that hold me captive in my mind and that I am unable to break free.

'You knew me better than anyone else, dear friend. I hope you are free from these diamond bars. My brother, my friend, you were the first and last person I ever loved. I hope you know this because I will never be able to say these words to you.'
