Unfortunately the band didn’t get back until it was almost time for sound check. Gerard came on to the bus looking pissed off. I watched as he walked over to the refrigerator and grabbed a soda. He took a seat across from me without a word.
“Well it’s good to see you, too.” I said teasingly. “Yeah, I’ve missed you too.”
“Don’t start with me, okay?” He snapped.
I was shocked by his remark. Something had obviously happened to put him in this foul mood. I wondered if I should try to find out or just let him sulk. Given the fact that I had questions to ask him he wasn’t going to like I decided just to wait. I stood and stretched.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“Someplace where I’m not going to get my head bitten off.” I retorted. “I mean think about it a minute. I’ve sat on this bus all day waiting for you to get back and you snap at me.”
“I told you to stay home.” He growled, “But you never fucking listen.”
“Yeah, I never fucking listen.” I answered. “Call your mother. She called hours ago and is waiting for you to call back.” Even as angry as I was with him I hated that I had to tell him to call her but I knew it was something I had to do.
“What the hell does she want?” He asked.
I took a deep breath and tried to control my anger. “Just call her.” I said. I grabbed my hoodie and walked to the stairs. He made no move to stop me. The sun was just starting to set and the air was pleasantly cool. I saw no sign of Worm and to be honest I wasn’t gonna look for him. I felt completely safe surrounded by so many people I knew. I spotted Ray talking to a tech and wondered over in his direction. I needed to tell him about the Meet & Greet problems. I stood a short distance away until he finished talking. As soon as the tech walked away he turned to me.
“Hey, Laura.”
“Ray, there’s a problem with the Meet & Greet.” I began to explain the situation quickly. He was not happy.
“Shit. Why today of all days?” He muttered.
Might as well find out if he knew what was going on with my husband. “So what happened today to make Gee into a fire breathing dragon?”
Ray laughed, “Fire breathing dragon. I like that one. Yeah, he’s pretty fucking pissed. We were at the radio station doing the interview and Eve showed up.”
“Eve?” I was shocked.
“Yeah, she lives here and has quite a few connections. She finagled a way on to the show with us.”
“Holy shit. What did she say?” My hatred for the woman knew no bounds. She had never loved Gerard she had just been using him. Of course the same could be said for him but at least he’d tried to care for her.
“Well evidently she has so many friends in the music business she conned them into helping her record a CD. They played several of the songs from it on the show.”
“She sings?”
He shrugged, “Not well but not terrible. Anyway, the lyrics were obviously about Gerard. About being with a man who couldn’t satisfy her.”
“Bitch.” I muttered.
Ray laughed, “Yeah, she’s a bitch all right. That wasn’t the worse part though. The DJ started asking questions because he knew Eve and Gerard had been engaged. She laughed it all off saying that the lyrics didn’t have anything to do with Gerard but hell anyone listening to them knows that’s a lie. I think Gee could have held it together until the played another song from the CD and it was about loving a guy who has ‘different’ tastes.”
“Shit. I’d like to take that ho down.” I said angry. Behind me I heard laughter. I turned wondering how long he’d been standing there.
“Laura, calm down.” He walked up to me and put his arm around my waist.
I looked at my husband and saw that the anger I’d seen earlier seemed to have disappeared. “I will not calm down. That bitch needs to shut the fuck up.”
Ray and Gerard both exchanged a glance I couldn’t understand. Gerard said softly, “Why did you tell her?”
Ray shrugged, “She’d find out soon or later. You know Eve is vile and she’s not just gonna fade into the background.”
Gerard sighed, “Yeah, I know.”
I was still seething. “What else did she say?”
Once again Gee and Ray looked at each other before answering,. “She made several comments that while not directed at Gee hit home. She implied that he married you on the rebound and that you are just a cover for his true lifestyle.”
“Oh really?” I fumed. “Well wouldn’t it piss off the bitch to know I’m gonna have Gee’s baby?” As soon as the words left my mouth I felt Gerard’s arm tighten around me.
“You’re pregnant?” Ray sputtered. He looked at Gerard, “You told me she couldn’t have children.”
I tuned in Gee’s arms, “What the hell? Did you discuss this with everyone you know?”
“There are no secrets between us.” Ray said angrily. “At least there shouldn’t be.”
Okay I’d had enough. “Look you two. It’s not exactly like I’m in the dark about all the shit between you two. So you can just stop acting like I am.” I shook my head. “Both of you give me a headache.”
Ray ignored me and spoke to Gerard, “A baby? How the fuck are you gonna deal with that?
Hell hath no fury like a pregnant pissed off woman. “Ray, I’m tired of you making my husband sound like a fucking emotional cripple. We’re married, we’re gonna have a baby.” I was so angry I couldn’t see straight. I turned to Gerard, “Why the fuck do you let him treat you like this?”
Gerard looked down at the ground and remained silent. I wanted to shake him. “Fine, whatever.” I turned back towards the bus.
“Laura, he’s right.” Gerard said softly.
I whipped back around. “You are gonna be a father. I suggest you grow a pair.” I stomped off towards the bus. Gerard caught up to me before I reached my destination. He grabbed my arm roughly.
“Let go.” I said trying to pull my arm out of his grasp.
His hold tightened. He pulled me along and I noticed several people were watching so I didn’t make a scene. We boarded the bus and I immediately pulled my arm out of his grip and headed towards the bunk. My head was pounding now and I was still extremely angry. Gerard followed me.
“We need to talk.” He said sitting down after I had stretched out.
I turned to face the wall. “Not now. I’m too pissed off to talk to you.”
He signed, “Look, I’m sorry. Eve just pissed me off.”
“And you took it out on me.” I said softly.
“Yeah, I took it out on you.” He agreed.
Neither of us spoke for several minutes. Finally he asked if I was going to the Meet & Greet. I told him that I didn’t feel up to it and was going to nap. He sighed then stood. As soon as he left the bus I let my tears flow.
I completely slept through the Meet & Greet. When I awoke the concert had already started. I saw on the table that Alicia had left me a note. She said she didn’t want to wake me and that she was backstage. I debated several minutes trying to decide if I wanted to see the concert. My final decision was that I would just stay on the bus.
I had just come out of the bathroom when Gerard and the others showed up from the second Meet & Greet. They all looked so tired and I felt sorry for them, especially my husband who had dark circles under his eyes. He walked up to me.
“Why didn’t you come for the concert?” He asked. “Are you sick?”
I shook my head. “No, I’m fine.”
He nodded and walked on towards to back of the bus. I was surprised a moment later when he reappeared with out duffle bags. “Come on.”
“Come on?” I repeated. “Come on, where?” I asked following him towards the front door.
“What’s up?” Ray asked from the sofa.
“We’re driving to the next venue.” Gerard said quickly.
“Gee, you’re exhausted.” Mikey said softly. His concern for his brother was loud and clear.
“I’m fine.” Gerard answered. “Well see you tomorrow.”
“Really think it’s a good idea?” Ray stood and walked towards us.
“I think it’s a fucking great idea.” Gerard responded. “Laura and I need some time to ourselves.”
Ray looked like he was about it say more but I cut him off. “He’s right. It’s a fucking great idea.”
“You can’t keep running.” Ray said quietly.
Gerard turned to him. “I’m not running from anything. I’m running to something. I’m running to some time with my wife and my unborn child.”
Frank and Bob both looked up quite shocked.
“Unborn child?” Frank repeated. He walked over to me. “You’re gonna have a baby?”
I nodded and was quickly swept up in a huge hug. “Thanks.” I giggled.
Bob surprised me by giving me a huge hug too. “That’s great news.” He said releasing me.
“You kids have fun.” Alicia said from across the bus. “We’ll see you tomorrow.”
I smiled to her. “Yeah, tomorrow.” I agreed.
Gerard nodded to me and we walked down the stairs and off the bus into the cool night air. I saw Worm standing by a car not far from us. He opened the truck and stood by while Gee put the bags in. I couldn’t make out what he said to Gerard as he handed him the keys.
I got in and smiled. My husband was right we did need some time alone. I wanted to repair any of the damage Eve’s remarks had done to him. I knew the bitch has told him time and time again he was a horrible lover. She was so very, very wrong.
Gerard got in and started the car. “So when did you decide this?” I asked.
“This afternoon when you got mad at me.” He answered. “I figured I needed to make it up to you for me being such a pansy and letting Ray treat me like shit.”
“I still don’t understand why he does that to you.” I didn’t want to cause another argument but it really bothered me.
Gerard sighed, “Force of habit?” He thought a minute; “I let Ray blame me for Merri’s death because in some sick way it eased some of my guilt. That doesn’t make sense does it?”
I sighed, “Yeah, it does make sense. By letting Ray blame you, you were still punishing yourself.” I reached over and laid my hand on his thigh, “But it’s definitely time to stop.”
He nodded without looking my way, “You’re right.” We drove on for several minutes before he asked, “So I never did call Mom. What did she want?”
“Gee, if it’s okay with you I don’t want to think about anything tonight but us.”
He understood. “That’s more than okay with me.”
“So are we going to stop somewhere or just drive all the way tonight to the next venue?”
“We’re going to stop in about an hour.” His voice was smooth, “I figure we’ll spend the night in a nice hotel and take off in the morning. I don’t really have to be at the next venue until sound check.”
I smiled, “Great.”
Staring straight ahead he spoke softly. “Now it is you, my best beloved one. You will be flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood. You will cross land and sea to do my bidding."
A shiver ran down my spine and my pulse quickened. He had planned a movie night. “Dracula.” I whispered.
“Well it’s good to see you, too.” I said teasingly. “Yeah, I’ve missed you too.”
“Don’t start with me, okay?” He snapped.
