~Pete~
I didn't leave. I have the right to stay here, it's my goddamn house too. So that's why I'm here right now, fixing myself a bowl of cereal.
I sat down at the table and shoved a spoonful of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in my mouth. And just then, I heard Patrick walk through the door.
Patrick paused and looked at me. “What the hell are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to get out?”
I stared at my cereal trying to think of something to say.
“Answer me!” Patrick roared.
“Look, this is my house too. I helped pay for it!”
Patrick started to say something but I cut him off. “If you hate me so much, why don't you just get out?!”
“Because I helped pay for it too!”
I shrugged my shoulders and said, “So, I'm not leaving and you're not leaving. I guess that means we're gonna have to live with each other.”
Patrick unclenched his fists and said, “Fine. But you just stay out of my way.”
Just as he was about to walk up stairs, I stopped him with a question. “So, where exactly were you last night?”
“I-I....well, I was out with this one friend of mine....”
I grinned and knew I had him. “Oh, so you guys got drunk and you crashed at HIS place?”
Patrick tugged on his hat nervously and said, “Well, actually, it was this girl I know”
“Oh! So you just crashed on her couch last night?”
“W-Well, I actually slept in her bed.” Patrick blushed a deep red.
“Haha! You totally banged her! So, who was it?”
“It was that girl Natasha, you know, you've, uh, met her before.”
This caused me to choke on God knows what. “Oh my fucking God! You fucked Natasha?!”
Before Patrick could answer, I thought of something else to say. “You are such a hypocrite, you know that? Getting all upset when you found me and Ryan together.”
That made Patrick turn red but for another reason. “Look, who said this was your fucking business, anyway? Do me a favor and just butt out, because I don't want to hear your bull shit right now. I'm tired, my head hurts, and I feel sick to my stomach. I'm going back to bed.”
I turned to face my cereal again, but when I got to it, it was soggy. So I got up to get another bowl. I went to pour the cereal, but the box was empty. And there was no more extra boxes of cereal left. Damn.
For the next few weeks, Patrick avoided me and I avoided him, and it became like a daily routine. Patrick got up a half an hour early, and I got up a half an hour late, just so we could avoid each other.
But after the fifth week, it got a little old.
Patrick was sitting at the table eating dinner and I sat down across from him. I tried to think of something to say and I finally came up with, “So, what are you eating?”
Patrick answered with one word. “Chicken.”
“Oh,” I said, trying to think of something else to say, “what kind of chicken?”
“Fried.”
“Sounds good, how is it? Do you like it?”
Patrick nodded.
I gave up on the small talk and got right to the point. “Patrick, we need to stop acting like this.”
I waited for Patrick to say something, but when he didn't, I continued. “We were best friends! Remember how close we used to be?! Now look at us, just because of one big misunderstanding. I'm sorry about Ryan, I won't let it happen again, I promise. What we had was just physical, not emotional like our relationship is.”
Patrick said nothing. “Please, give me another chance. I don't think I can take this anymore.”
Patrick was surprised, including me, when tears started to run down my face. Patrick immediately got up from his chair and put his arms around me. I hugged him back, letting the tears fall on his shoulder.
He finally spoke to me and said, “It's okay, we can make this work. I'm sorry Pete, I'm so sorry.”
And soon I felt tears fall on my shoulder as well.
During our love fest, I felt Patrick's sidekick buzz in his pocket. “Oh, hold on.”
Patrick answered the phone. “Hello? Oh, hi Natasha! I haven't heard from you for awhile.”
He paused for a second and said, “What is it? Are you okay?”
Ten seconds later, Patrick hit the floor with a thud and I rushed to help him. I grabbed his phone and asked Natasha, “What in the hell did you just say to him?!”
She replied with a small voice, so small he could barely hear her. “I just told him that I'm, uh, pregnant.”
