“Ray what?” Pen looked up from the grocery list she was writing at the kitchen table and gaped at Bob. Her jaw dropped, and her eyes were wide.

“He’s getting married,” Bob repeated, hanging up the phone and joining his girlfriend at the table.

“To whom?”

“His girlfriend, I’m supposing.”

“Christa? Didn’t they just meet, like, a few months ago?”

“They‘ve been dating almost as long as we have.” Bob looked down at his hands; him and Pen had never really discussed the option of marriage, even after nearly two years of dating.

“Jeez, that’s crazy. I can’t imagine Ray married…” Pen didn’t notice Bob’s bashfulness at the approach of this subject. Marriage had never even crossed her mind since they’d started dating. “Well…when are they doing it?”

“Two weeks,” Bob said, shaking his head slightly.

“Two weeks! That’s a little soon.”

“Yep. I guess they don’t wanna wait. He asked me to be his best man.”

“Oh, that’s cool! So you get to stand up there in a tux, all cleaned up nicely, and watch as your friend gets married?” She smiled at Bob.

“Yeah, but so do you. Apparently, Christa wants you to be one of her bridesmaids.”

Pen’s forehead wrinkled. She had only met Christa a few times, and they only talked if Pen was calling to talk to Ray, and she happened to pick up the phone. “Me? Why?”

“She thinks of you as a friend, I guess. Do you want me to tell him you don’t want to?”

Pen thought for a moment. “Well…no, I guess not.” she said finally, biting her lip. “I’ve never been in a wedding before. Don’t we have to go early to get measured, or something?”

“Yeah. Ray said that we can get measured on Saturday. I’m not working tomorrow, but you should probably call in for a day off.” Bob told her.

Pen worked at a business firm, as a receptionist. It wasn’t the most glamorous of jobs, but it was a job, and it paid well. After living unemployed with Bob for a few months, she insisted on getting a job.

“It’s not fair that you pay all the bills, but I live here too.”

“Penelope, really, you don’t have to get a job. I make enough money to support both of us, and you make a little money off of your poems.” He sighed at the look Pen gave him. “But if you want to get a job, I won’t stop you. Whatever makes you happy,” Bob had told her, smiling and earning a smile in return.

Pen liked her job, and she didn’t mind the hours, but her boss was not very generous at all in giving out days off/sick days. Pen dreaded calling and asking for the next day, but she knew she had to. She dialed his cell phone and took a deep breath. “Hello Mr. Thell,” she said quickly once he answered. “I was wondering if I could…I mean, my friend is getting married in a few weeks and I need to get fitted for my dress on Saturday, and we have to leave tomorrow to make it--”

“And I suppose you want the day off?” her boss interrupted. “And then I suppose you’ll want a few more days off when the day actually comes?” He seemed irritable, and Pen took a deep breath so she wouldn’t sound whiny.

“Yes, sir. I’m sorry, I--”

“Very well,” he snapped. “See you on Monday, then.” With that, Mr. Thell hung up, and Pen made a face into the phone.

“Thanks-a-fucking-lot, asshole,” she told the dial tone.

“Thell-inator not happy?” Bob asked knowingly, trying not to laugh at Pen’s soured mood.

“When is he ever?” she asked, shoving her phone into her pocket. She sighed

“Awh, don’t let that old codger put you in a bad mood, Penelope. He’s just miserable, and he doesn’t like to see his young, full-of-life employees enjoying themselves.”

“Got that right,” she said, perching on Bob’s lap. “When do we leave?” she asked, slipping her arm around his shoulders.

“Well, we’ve got a lot of driving ahead of us,” he told her, mentally mapping it out in his head. “About 12 hours, give or take. We’ll probably leave early tomorrow morning and get there around six or seven.”

“Sounds good,” She said, getting off his lap to go pack, Bob joining her up in their room after a few minutes. They shared a duffel bag between them, since they’d only be in New Jersey for one day and two nights.

The next morning, before sun-up, the couple left their Chicago home and set out for Trenton, NJ. Twelve hours, three bathroom breaks, a gas stop, and countless small arguments about which route to take later, Pen and Bob arrived at their friend’s home.

Hands clasped, they walked together to the doorstep, stepping up and ringing the doorbell.

A few seconds passed, and a man with a big, curly, red afro answered the door with a huge smile on the face that neither Pen nor Bob had seen in almost a year.

“You guys!”
