Jen’s POV
He just had to introduce me as Jennifer didn’t he?! He knew I hated people calling me that!
“Please just call me Jen,” I said as I glared at my father.
“Ohkay!” said a boy with a massive afro, “I’m Ray, the other’s are Gerard, Sarah, Frank, Kirrah, Mikey and Lindsey.”
“Hi,” I said shyly while pushing my freshly dyed light blue hair out of my eyes. The boy, Ray, he was staring at me, I looked at him and he quickly looked away, but his eyes kept finding mine, and I kept catching him staring at me. I wondered why.
“Come on! We’ll show you around,” said the boy Ray had introduced as Mikey.
We went inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ray had offered my father and I his room, saying that we could set up two beds in there and he would sleep out in the living room/kitchen. I didn’t really want to share a room with my father, but he had already accepted, probably just making sure I didn’t end up sharing a room with one of the guys.
We all sat in the living room.
“So, what have you guys organised in terms of food?” asked my father.
“Well we have enough food for about a week here, it’s in the back of the kitchen,” answered the black haired boy, Gerard.
“We’re going to need to get back into the city soon,” said the REALLY short boy, I think his name was Frank.
“I’m not going to let you go there, it’s too dangerous,” said Bob.
“Well what do you suggest we do? If we don’t go to get more food, we’ll starve!” said Gerard.
“I’ll go in,” my father replied, “by myself, you guys are too young, I’m not going to let you risk you’re lives like that, no arguing. Besides, it will be safer to go alone, one person captured, but eight still free is better than nine captured.”
“I guess, but we’re not letting you take all the risks while we just sit here, we’ll take it in turns, one or two people go out, raid a different part of the city every time, and bring back as much as they can,” said the black and green haired girl that Ray had introduced as Sarah.
“Fine,” agreed Bob, “but I’ll go in first, on my bike, I’ll try and get a car and load it up. I’m gonna stay in there for a few days, getting information about what’s happening, if I don’t get back within a week, I’m gone, I know it sounds horrible, but don’t try to help me, you need to stay free.”
“Here, I have the keys to my car, it’s still in the school parking lot,” said Sarah as she passed him a set of keys and described her car to him.
“Good luck,” I said as I hugged him, he smiled at us and walked out the door, I had a horrible feeling that something bad was about to happen.
Gerard’s POV
Bob had just left, Ray was staring at Jen, and Jen just looked worried, Mikey and Lindsey were curled up together in the corner, Frank and Kirrah were talking quietly together and Sarah was... wait... where was Sarah? I heard something moving around above me.
I walked outside.
Sarah was on the roof. Why was Sarah on the roof? I climbed up to join her.
“Whatcha doing?” I asked as I sat next to her.
“Keeping an eye on the desert,” she replied. Huh?
“Why?” I asked.
“Because if someone’s coming, we need to see them as soon as possible, we need to get out of here as quickly as we can. We need to start preparing for war, sure, this is a good, hidden spot, but what if they find us here, we need other places to hide, we need security, we need to be more mobile,” she explained. It was obvious she had been thinking about this a lot lately.
“Okay, we’ll get one of the others to do this, and you and I can go explore the desert a bit, try and find a few more places we can hide,” I suggested.
She nodded and began to climb down from the roof.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We’d been driving for only five minutes before we came across an old abandoned diner.
“Why would there be a diner in the middle of the desert?” I asked.
“You used to have to come through here to get to the city, a lot of traffic came through, it makes sense to have something here, but eventually quicker ways into the city were made and this place became abandoned and well, this happened,” she answered, gesturing to the abandoned diner.
“Sarah!” I yelled, “there’s someone in there!”
“Are you sure?” she asked as she looked warily through the windows of the diner.
“Yeah, I saw them, there were at least four of them, maybe five,” I replied as my eyes searched for more signs of life.
BANG!
The unmistakable sound of a gunshot ran through that air. Sarah pulled me down to the ground as she raised her hands, trying to show that we meant no harm.
“What do you want! Why are you here!” yelled a voice from inside the diner.
I looked up to see a young girl, she couldn’t have been any older than twelve, she held a gun, aiming it at us, her expression fearful yet determined.
“We’re not going to hurt you!” I yelled back, looking at this girl.
“Are you with Bl/ind?” asked the girl on the roof.
“No, we ran away as soon as we saw that something was wrong,” said Sarah.
Four more girls walked out of the diner, guns aimed at us. The oldest looked to be about our age. I held Sarah’s hand tightly in mine.
“Do you think we can trust them?” asked the oldest girl, she had pale skin, long wavy brown hair and bright blue eyes.
“I think we can,” said the youngest girl as she pushed her thin glasses back into place. She jumped down off the roof and landed quite gracefully, “those drugged up people can’t feel anything, not even fear; they looked scared when I shot at them.”
We stayed with them for hours, talking about what was happening, but when we asked them their names, they said they weren’t going to tell us.
“It’s safer that way, we’ve all thought of nicknames, we will tell you those, we suggest you do the same, if no-one knows your name, no-one can use it against you to find your family, there’s less chance of being blackmailed,” the oldest explained, “I’m Aplocalyto.”
“Lady Madness,” said a small black haired, yellow eyed girl in her early teens, she was wearing neon pink skinny jeans, a faded ripped black tank top and awesome cowboy boots.
“Toxic bite,” said a girl who looked about sixteen, she had long browny-purple hair with her fringe dyed bright purple. She wore a tight purple vest top with a black cropped jacket over it, black, ripped skinny jeans and purple high tops, a black studded belt was wrapped around her hips.
“Chemical Corpse,” said a short Asian girl as she flicked her side fringe out of her brown eyes. The chains that crossed at the back of her bright red skinny jeans clinked together as she moved over to the youngest girl, the one who had shot at us, “and this little devil is Black-hearted beauty.”
“I guess I’ll call myself Sonic Sunrise,” said Sarah with a smile.
“Uh... Party Poison?” I said, I liked the sound of that.
“Cool names,” said Chemical Corpse with a smile.
“We’ve got uh, more friends at our base, do you guys want to come with us?” I asked.
“We’ll stay for a few hours, but it’s safer to stay in small groups, it’s easier to hide that way,” said Apoclyto, she seemed to be their leader.
“Okay,” said Sarah, she sounded happy.
“We were about to move on from this place, can’t stay in one place to long,” said Apoclyto
They grabbed their few possessions and followed us back through the mountains on motorbikes.
I just hoped they would get on with the others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They did not... well that is, Frank and Black-hearted beauty didn’t get on. The rest of them got on just fine, Frank, of course, had to act like a five year old, arguing with everything she said.
“Frank! You’re five years older than her! Grow up!” scolded Lindsey, “but she is taller than you.” We all laughed.
“Hey! Shut it pansy!” He laughed.
“Make me short ass,” she retorted.
“Guys! I’m twelve and I act more mature than you two!” laughed Black-hearted Beauty.
Frank stuck his tongue out childishly, but he stopped arguing.
“It’s time for us to go,” said Apoclyto as she stood. The others followed her suit.
“We’ll have to meet up again, who knows what we could do if we worked together,” said Mikey.
“Yeah, we’ll come back here, two weeks from now, you’ll still be here right?” asked Apoclyto.
“Yeah, if not we’ll be at that diner we found you guys at,” I answered, “We’ll have to figure out a better way to keep in touch.”
“See you then,” said Toxic Bite as they walked out the door, I hoped we would see them again, but in these times, you could never be sure.
Bob’s POV
I stared in horror at the scene before me. Vacant expressions, mindless bodies, colourless, joyless, soulless. There was no joy left in this world, there was no beauty, it was a perfect society, I hated it.
Thousands of people were building a wall around the city, the city that had now been stripped of all colours. Teenagers who normally wouldn’t have lifted a finger to help with anything were now working mindlessly, no free will of their own. I snuck into the city and made my way to my own house, putting on the plainest clothes I had to try and fit in. I walked outside to find out what was happening.
I came across piles of un-opened boxes, they were not guarded, but then again, with everyone drugged up, why would they need to be? I couldn’t help myself, I opened one to see what was inside.
I gasped. The boxes were filled with guns, but not normal guns, they were labelled “Ray Guns” the boxes had the Bl/ind label marking them, but the ray guns were just plain white.
We could use these, I thought at I shoved a whole heap of them into the backpack I had brought with me.
I heard a noise from behind me and turned around to see a creature staring at me. Large white fangs protruded from its mouth, it had shaggy black hair and was dressed completely in white. This was one of the creatures that Sarah had killed.
I reached for one of the guns, ready to defend myself from this horrible, un-natural creature. It snarled at me, spit flying from its mouth. I raised the gun, ready to shoot. It lunged at me and with shaking hands... I pulled the trigger, ending its life.
I returned to my house quickly, deciding to get food and get back to the desert as quickly as possible, it was too dangerous to stay here. I loaded Sarah’s car, which I had taken from the school, with supplies and my motorbike, and headed out of the city, using as many back roads as possible, trying to stay out of site.
I was at the edge of the city, I could see the desert. A man came up to the car and tapped on the window, speeding away would look to suspicious, so I tried to act normal, letting a blank expression slide over my face.
“Excuse me sir, I’m officer Korse, may I ask what you’re doing?” asked the man.
Korse, I thought, SHIT! That’s what Sarah said her dad’s name was! He was one of the one’s behind all this.
“I was told to deliver these boxes out to the workers,” I answered in a flat, monotone voice, while gesturing to the boxes that contained guns and food in the back.
“May I see you’re pass?” he asked.
“Pass?” I asked. Hoping he bought my act of ignorance.
“Every person who leaves the city boundaries must have a pass, if you were really under orders, you would have a pass, I am going to have to see what’s in those boxes!” said Korse sternly as he placed his hand on his gun.
Oh no. He spun around quickly once he saw the motorbike.
I couldn’t waste any time. I shot him.
It hit him in the shoulder, it was not bad enough to kill, but it would do some serious damage. He screamed in agony as he lifted his own gun and aimed it at me.
I got in the car.
I thought I was safe when the car started, I was driving away. Then, pure agony ripped through my chest. I was hit.
I couldn’t stop. I had to keep going. I had to get back to them. I drove and drove. But I couldn’t go on. Pain, blood and darkness consumed me.
My last memory before I passed out was a small figure walking towards me.
“Apoclyto!” the small girl screamed, “We need to help him!”
A bigger girl came towards me, worry in her eyes, “We’ll take him back to the others, hopefully they can help him.”
Then... nothing... what was it they said about not going into the light?
