Chapter 1: Brotherly love

"Sesshy! Gimme gimme!" InuYasha cried jumping up and down besides his older brother Sesshomaru as he laughed at his brother's 'doginess', as he held the red ball out of his reach.

"Humph. Get it InuYasha! JUMP, JUMP!" He gave a boyish giggle as he held the ball up a little further.

InuYasha cried and started climbing Sesshomaru's body as if it were a tree.

Sesshomaru hissed as his brother's claws dug into his sides. "Baka! Get off of me!" he growled, throwing the ball for Inu, who instantly leapt off his brother's solid form in hopes of retrieving it.

He watched his brother's tail wagging happily behind him in amusement. How he really loved that tail of his. They all had one ... It was the family trademark.

"Boys!" rang InuTaisho's voice as he came swiftly into Sesshomaru's room. "I told you, Sesshomaru, to stop teasing your brother like that!" he growled as he ran his hand through his loose silvery hair which reached his lower back. He looked down at InuYasha and smiled, then back at Sesshomaru. "I'm going out to patrol the lands; I'll be back around sundown tomorrow evening. Take care of your brother. I'm taking your mother with me."

Sesshomaru nodded and bowed his head, "Yes, father."

It was not really Sesshomaru's nature to be "nice" to anyone. But he loved his brother so much.

Feeling sorry for the little Hanyou, he watched over him fiercely. Even then, he had his moments of coldness with the half-demon.

The Dog brothers were close. They sometimes slept with each other for comfort.

InuTaisho thought nothing of it seeing how InuYasha was just a pup, and his son Sesshomaru was just a protective brother.

He had often seen his boys roughhousing. It was a good way to build up skill for battles, so he never really interfered, but sometimes he enjoyed breaking it up.

InuTaisho smiled. "Be good now boys, I don't need the castle to be in ruins when I return," he winked and swiftly left.

InuYasha bit a fang into his ball and quickly chucked it at his brother. He watched it bounce off his head while Humaneness (I believe I should change this to Sesshomaru instead, though I'm not sure if this really makes sense?) stood like a tree. He giggled and ran to get the ball and repeatedly threw it at him.

Sesshomaru growled. "For a five year old you sure are annoying..." He glared down at him and quickly caught the ball in his palm before it hit him in the face again.

"I am not annoying..." InuYasha said, looking down at his claw like feet, sniffling, with his little dog tail between his legs in shame...

"Aww... Don't cry! I didn't mean it like that!" Sesshomaru said kneeling down to hug his brother. He loved him with all his heart, though he was a half demon. But his love for InuYasha went deeper than just a brotherly love.

The half demon sniffled and hugged his brother,
"You mean that?" he asked, looking up with big golden puppy eyes and ears that hung low and his tail wagging slightly.

The Youkai nodded and smiled, "Of course!"

InuYasha squealed and hugged his brother. "I love you Sesshy!" he said, rubbing his face against his brother's chest, his own tail wagging slightly side-to-side before stilling.

Sesshomaru picked him up in his arms and walked out of the room and down the hall to the Great Hall where they sat at the table while the servants came to great them.

"What can I get for you, Young Master?" one of the imp servants asked, bowing low.
Sesshomaru looked down at InuYasha for an answer.

The young half-demon thought for a moment, "I'll take some mead and some mince pie!" he piped as he looked at Sesshy questioningly.

"I'll have the same. Thank you Ryuun."

The servant quickly left to prepare their meal.

Deciding that it might take a while, the boys went to the garden where they sat together looking at the many flowers that their mothers had planted. Sesshomaru's senses were often overpowered here, but he would stay for his brother. It made the experience worthwhile.

"Sesshy?"

"Hm?"

"Do you like flowers?"

Childish questions were often asked by him, so Sesshomaru had gotten used to it. "I like them very much." He sighed and reached over to a large bright blue Orchid and placed it beside one of Inu's doglike ears which twitched and were tickled by the flower that rested peacefully in his hair.

InuYasha giggled, "I like that one very much big brother!" he said looking around to find a crimson orchid and reached up to put it over his brother's ear. "This matches your demon eye markings, big brother!" he said excitedly.

"I agree it's very nice."

"Sesshy?"

Another question... "Hm?"

"Why do you not have dog ears like mine?"
He had asked his human mother this question about
Sesshomaru and InuTaisho earlier but had gotten no answer. "Well, I don't know exactly, pup. But I think it makes you look extremely special!" he said truthfully as he hugged his brother closer to him and reached up to rub his soft silky ears. He really loved those ears. They went with him so well.

"And why do I not have a Moon on my forehead... Or demon markings...?" he said sadly.

He hated telling him that he was a half-breed; it was a dirty word to his ears. He didn't know how to put it. "Because, you're special. As I said,
"he said smiling.

"Oh..." he paused, letting the answer sink in

"Okay! Great! I'm super-special now!" he said cheerfully.

InuYasha had asked their parents many times and never really gotten a decent answer. The most he got was a snort and a smile before they changed the subject. Sesshomaru himself didn't really know what to say. All of them did indeed have a marking of a demon on them. Sesshomaru had his crescent on his forehead and his dark purple markings, his father had the dark purple stripes too, along with a pair of crescents that no one had ever really ever seen before and which were connected on the opposite ends on his shoulder blades.

The only thing that connected InuYasha to them by looks was the trademark golden eyes, tails, claws, fangs and a long silver silk mane of hair. The dog ears had never been expected to occur while he was being developed. Maybe it was just an odd genetic mutation they thought. But perhaps it was just because he was a half-demon.

Sesshomaru smiled softly and looked over as the servant approached and bowed, "Lords, would you like to eat out here or inside? I could bring you a blanket to sit on if you would like?" he offered.

"What do you say little one?" he asked Inu.

"Can we! Wow! Sweet! Yes!"
The servant nodded and went to get the food and blanket.

They ate quietly and then lay back and looked at the clouds. Sesshomaru thought of what the future might hold for them. He hoped the Gods would be generous and kind to them and keep them together.

Years later...

The years flew by like seconds. InuYasha was now 15 and Sesshomaru 19. Their lives had changed. They were separated by the fates on a stormy night while on a ship that was heading out to sea to find a wretched demon that was threatening their lands. There had been a fight against the watery dragon which seemed endless until finally the watery dragon demon got its hold on InuYasha, who had been fighting with his father InuTaisho and his brother Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru had tried to grab his hand as the dragon pulled him under and catapulted him through the air and into the rocks before grabbing him again and swinging him out to sea.

They all thought him dead and gave the demon the death blow, chomping him up to pieces. Or at least that was what they had thought had happened.

Grief stricken, they went home to tell InuYasha's mother.

She also was extremely saddened and went into a small room, grieving. Sesshomaru just lost it himself and locked himself into his room for days on end. How could he live without InuYasha, his beloved brother? He didn't know how to go on.
InuTaisho was the only one that was being strong for all of them. He continued patrolling their lands for other demons that sought to take advantage of the family's time of depression and grieving and attempt to take over their lands.

InuTaisho would never allow all their land to go up in flames and let all their hard work defending it is in vain.

Sesshomaru's POV

I didn't know what to do. I was so lost and confused. What will I do? InuYasha... Please, come. Back little brother, I miss you... I'm sorry... sorry for not saving you...
I wondered why I held such emotion for him... Not even a demon should feel this way for a sibling. But our bond was strong. Stronger than anything.

As if it were like love I looked over at the window and blinked away my tears.

"Sesshomaru..?" Called my father who rapped softly at the door.

I cleared my throat, "Yes?"

"You've been in there for almost a month! I think you need an assignment now. A journey to clear your mind."

It was true. I had to get out of the place. Maybe I could find my brother's body. It was the least I could do to make us both at ease.

"Okay father. I know what I am to do," I spoke as I got up and put on my armor and sword before going to open the door for my father who stood there with pinkish eyes; a sign of his own grief. "I have decided to go find his body and bring it home, it's the least I can do."

He nodded in agreement and understanding.

"I'm going to do this alone."

Again he nodded. "I will go get Ah-Un for you along with some supplies."

"Okay."

Normal POV

Sesshomaru got ready, and ate the last at-home meal he would have for a while, and got on Ah-Un's back. And started off to another quest. He would find his brother's body if it meant to be the last thing he ever did.

It would be the best thing for his brother's remains to be given a decent grave...
