Gerard walked hand in hand with his boyfriend down the grimy hallway of the local high school, his once perfect fitting Smashing Pumpkins shirt hanging loosely of his frail frame. He looked over at the nineteen year old jock, clad in the traditional baseball jacket that adorned the initials of the school, and smiled faintly.

Bert left Gerard by his locker, whispering in his ear that he needed to lose a few more pounds before he could meet his friends. Soon after Bert left, a small, tattooed boy ran down the corridor, backpack in tow and pulled Gerard into a bone-breaking hug.

“Morning, Gee!” the ever-happy boy squealed.

“Hi Frankie,” Gerard replied, a weary smile on his face.

“You know…” Frank’s tone suddenly became serious, “you’ve lost an awful lot of weight over the break, are you okay?” Gerard nodded slightly, the tight skin on his neck constricting his movements.

“You sure? Your face,” Frank lent forward, resting his fingertips on the older males too prominent cheek bones and frowned, concerned for his best friend’s wellbeing, “ looks like you’ve tied the skin up at the back of your head, its that stretched,”

“I’m fucking fine, Frank. You ask me this every day so why should today be any different?” he snapped.

“Sorry…” Frank mumbled, walking a few paces behind his best friend on their way to first period. You’d be lying if you thought frank was just Gerard’s best friend, you see, frank’s had a crush on Gerard for years, but has yet to admit it to anyone. Seeing Gerard with Bert everyday crushes Frank, the only thing that hurts more is the fact that Gerard’s been getting skinnier everyday since meeting the older jock.

It came as a surprised to the tattooed teen when his best friend, and love interest, started dating the football player since everyone in their group of five friends were outcasts; ridiculed by their taste in music and fashion sense and were often beaten up by Bert’s group of friends.

Frank was convinced Bert played a part in Gerard rapid weight loss, but every time the subject was bought up between the two, the older would brush it off.

Truth is, Gerard’s changed in more ways than once since he met Bert, his bright red hair was grown out and died black; his leather jackets replaced with tacky baseball coats. Also, his once bubbly and outspoken personality traits had been replaced with shy, mute ones. It would be easier to say that he was an entirely different person to whom Frank called his best friend

An awkward silence engulfed the pair as they sat next to each other in their English class, listening to the old bat of a teacher drone on about the importance of Shakespeare. Normally, the two males would listen to music with each other or throw paper balls at the teacher, instead of actually taking part in the lesson.

“Look, I’m sorry Frank. You know I just get protective over things like this. But honestly, there’s nothing wrong with me,” Gerard mumbled, just above a whisper; not taking his eyes of the grey-haired teacher.

“Does Bert have someth-“ Frank began, only to be cut of by an angry jab in his rib and a furious Gerard.

“No. it’s nothing to do with fucking Bert because there is. Nothing. Wrong. With. Me.” Gerard sneered; punctuating the last four words with sharp jabs to Frank’s side.

The latter sighed, feeling utterly useless. ‘All I was trying to do was help’ he thought, trying not to let his displeasure show

“Gee!” Mikey whined, pushing the plate towards his brother. “You have to eat something!”

Gerard pushed the plate away from him, shaking his head. “No, mikes,” he muttered, turning the page of his Hellboy comic book.

The other four boys that sat around the lunch table shared wary glances, each worried about their friend’s health. They all knew it was utterly pointless to argue with the older man, as he always insisted he was fine and lost his temper quickly. The conversation ceased and the friends pretended to be engrossed in eating there lunch, but stole glances at Gerard thinking he wouldn’t notice.

Of course though, Gerard did notice and silently revelled in the attention his boyfriend starved him off.

The silence was soon broken by the unmistakeable cackle of the head jock himself. The fear in Gerard’s eyes didn’t go unnoticed by Frank who was glancing between his best friend and his advancing boyfriend.

“Gee Baby!” Bert boomed, clasping hold of Gerard shoulders, making the addressee flinch at the sudden contact.

“Y-yeah Bert?” he whispered, clutching onto his page mid-turn.

“What’cha got there?” Bert peered over his boyfriends shoulder, eyeing the comic in distain.

“Um… m-my Hellboy comic…”

“Now, Gee, you know I don’t like those...” Bert reached over and flicked open his lighter, catching the pages in the blaze. He watched in satisfaction as the comic curled in on itself and the pages blackened, while the others watched with wide eyes and, in Gerard’s case, hurt expressions.

“M’sorry Bert…” he whimpered as his beloved comic turned to a mound of ash and singed staples in front of him.

Finally, Frank snapped out of his daze and abruptly stood up, knocking his chair back in the process.

“What the fuck was that for?!” he barked, shooting Bert’s smirking face a venom filled glare.

“I don’t like comic books, they’re too geeky,” Bert replied casually, flipping his greasy mane of hair out of his face.

“That was a fucking first edition comic book! They cost a fucking fortune!” the short man squared up to the jock, jaw locked, eyes filled with hate.

“Frank… stop...” Gerard murmured eyes downcast.

Said boy ignored the plead and continued to stare Bert down, as they hurled abuse and taunts at each other.

“Frank…”

Again, he was ignored.

“For fuck sake, Frank!” shouted, slamming his balled fists down on the table; causing ash to float into the air.

Frank slowly turned and stared wide eyed at an enraged Gerard, jaw hanging ajar.

“You’re so cute when you’re angry,” Bert cooed, kissing his boyfriends cheek. “Ill see you later honey,” and with that, he swaggered out of the cafeteria and headed towards the sports field.

Silence ensued and the four friends gaped at Gerard, stunned by his sudden burst of anger.

“Gee?” Mikey asked timidly, looking at his older brother with soft eyes

“Shut the fuck up,” Gerard muttered, grabbing his plain black backpack off the floor and storming out of the lunch hall in the opposite direction of his boyfriend.
