Even now as he sat staring at his laptop, he knew that this was completely and utterly ridiculous. It was the only word for it, though it was fair to say moronic and pointless also came quite close. Gerard Way was being forced to join a dating website. It would have been bad enough if he’d been joining of his own free will but Frank, his best friend of more years than he cared to count, had gotten the idea into his head that a dating website was the way for the twenty-six year old to go. Apparently he’d been single for far too long and it was about time that he got some which lasted for more than one night. His friend’s words still rung clearly in his ears;

“You’re a great guy, Gerard. Seriously, you’re freaking hilarious. The only thing is you’re a little bit weird. Don’t get me wrong, I love you for it, but you end up flagging people over with your face and then scaring them off with your weirdness. What you wanna do it join up to one of those dating website thingys. That way, you can put all your randomness out there for the world to see, so any people who then wanna get to know you already know what they’re getting. You’re just cutting out the middle bit!”

As much as he hated to admit it, his friend sort of had a point. Admittedly it was buried so deep within the absolute rubbish the man spewed on a daily basis, but it was there. It wasn’t having people interested in him which was the problem. It was keeping them around once he showed them just how geeky he really was, despite the impression his appearance of dyed black hair and dark eyeliner, which was the real problem.

Sighing, long fingers moved deftly across the keyboard as he typed in the web address of the particular website he’d chosen. Of all the dating website adverts which seemed to be played constantly on the television, this one seemed to be one of the more serious. After all, if he was being made to do this then he might as well do it properly. Drumming his nails across the surface of the table while the page loaded, he leant forward instinctively when the page appeared on the screen. The artist in him was satisfied with what he saw; the layout was bright but not gaudy, neutral colours apparently being the choice made, with various links along the top of the page making it quite clear where everything was.

Registering to the website didn’t take more than a few minutes which was probably a good thing; if it had taken too long, one of two things would have happened. He would either have gotten bored and given up or chickened out completely and just told Frank that he’d signed up. He filled in the form without too many problems, though he paused when he reached the Looking For and Interested In section of it. What was he looking for? He clicked the friendship box without taking too much thought, though he had to think about the relationship one a little longer. Did he actually want a relationship which started online? Deciding that it really was the whole point of signing up, he clicked that box just a moment later.

Scrolling down slightly to the Interested In section of the form, he clicked the men box. Hovering over the women one, he debated whether or not to click that as well. A tiny part of his brain yelled at him to keep his options open, though a much larger part told it to shut up. If he really wanted a relationship, then it was going to have to be with a man – women were alright to take home from a club for a one night stand, but the thought of having a relationship with a woman...

Quickly skipping past that, he got to work on writing his Biography. Smirking some at the screen, his tongue moved forward to trace along his lower lip in thought as he went all out on what he was typing. If Frank wanted people to know about his geeky side as soon as possible, then who was he to decline?

When content with what he’d written, he submitted it and leant back in his chair, arms stretching out in front of him as he linked his fingers, cracking his knuckles in the process.

Well, he thought, the ball’s in their court now.

The dark eyes of Mikey Williams trailed quickly across the screen as he read the information about the dating website he was currently looking at. Apparently it had the highest number of successful relationships of any website. Sceptical by nature, the twenty-three year old found that somewhat hard to believe but, seeing as he didn’t have any other sources of information, he decided it was best just to go with it. Personally, he wasn’t entirely sure about online dating, though with a couple of gentle pushes in the right direction from his friend Ray, he’d eventually come to a decision to give it a go. Ray had been right; he was just too shy to meet people in person straight away. Whenever the pair of them went out, he would have plenty of people approaching him, though his nerves would always get the better of him. After a few minutes of one word answers, most people would simply give up and walk away. Those who didn’t soon did when the virtual silent treatment continued.

That’s where internet dating came in. He and Ray had come to the conclusion that it might be easier for him to get to know people with a computer screen and several miles between them. That way he didn’t have to deal with the pressure of not only meeting someone new but also of thinking up something witty or attractive or otherwise appealing to say at the same time. Mikey thought that it was a bit of a long shot, though he had nothing to lose by trying.

Filling in the registration form took far longer than he thought it would, his nervous nature making him agonise over every single word, every single click as if he couldn’t change them at a second’s notice. It was the Biography part which was the hardest – what on earth was he supposed to write? It made him painfully aware of how uninteresting he truly was, but after the best part of two hours he realised that he just had to go for it. Checking that he had in fact clicked friendship, relationship and men, he eventually submitted the form.

It was only his quick shutting of the laptop and walking out of the room which stopped him from immediately deleting his profile.
