/I Thought Love/

by Dancingkatz

When I was younger I used to think
That Love was a prince on a white horse
Rescuing me from whatever dragons happened to be near
Sweeping me off my feet
Carrying me off
To a castle somewhere.

When I got older I used to think
That Love was two bodies entwined
On Mom's sofa after a movie and dinner
Or in the backseat of a car
Parked at some
Lover's Lane.

When I got older I used to think
That Love was the exchange of words
Over drinks in some single's bar
Followed by frantic humping
In some motel room
Off the interstate.

When I got older I used to think
That Love was something only
Gorgeous movie stars found
In a script created by some
Romantic writer
In Hollywood.

When I got older I used to think
That there was no such
Thing as Love but only
Illusions created by
Lonely post-graduates
And housewives.

Then I met you and learned
That Love is more than the
Idle dreams of girls
And adolescents ripe
With the urges
Of hormones.

You taught me so much
That Love is a place
Where the sensation of touch
And the interest and care
Of another human
Meet and combine.

You explained and showed me
That Love resided on many planes
On your lips, in my mind,
In the sting of your cane,
The embrace of restraint
And other delights.

You enfold me in your arms
Where love is the stroke of
Leather on skin and the taste
Of sweat, the scent of a candle,
The whisper of promises
Made not to be broken.

You lead me to levels of
Self-understanding where I
Find that Love was in myself
All along and that all I
Needed was the discipline
You provided to find it.

So now I am older and I know
That Love is the knowledge that
Every lash, every slap, every stroke
Every cry, every writhe, every sigh
Exchanged between us connects
Two people together.

And as I grow older I will find
That connection is what Love is
All about and regardless of whether
The whip or a dozen roses is the
Method used, We, you and I
Will never again be lonely.
