“Cry for me.” His rough voice whispered in to the desperate, and dying prostitute’s ear. She sputtered, but no words came out. His belt was tied around her throat, and he pulled tight, as tears spilled down her cheeks. They soaked his fingertips.

As the man stared in to her eyes, watching the life die out slowly… he found his demons, because this is where they hid, and where he kept them. With each kill they came out to play, and threatened everything he pretended to be.

Avery gazed down at her bruised arm, shaking her head. She’d nearly ruined everything by acting out in public, like a child. Why couldn’t she just lie better? She’d been mentally abusing herself over it since they’d arrived back at the hotel.

Pete was gone.

He left, said he had a few things he had to do.

So here she waited, fingering through the junk food they’d gotten. Had she messed up? She wondered if he would even come back, or if she’d ruined it all.

She couldn’t be so stupid if she hoped to get Patrick back, safe and sound.

Pete pulled to a stop outside of a crumbling gas station. He was still in the ‘bad’ part of town, though his business had been completed.

As he climbed out, he found his limbs to be sore and overworked.

The romance section was limited in the store, and consisted of three or four stuffed animals, all of which were highly overpriced.

Pete stared for several seconds, thinking of Avery and the bruise he’d given her earlier in the night. His verbal apology didn’t seem like enough, and soon he was plucking the biggest stuffed animal off of the shelf. It was medium sized, and looked more like a dog than a bear. It was probably supposed to be a dog. Pete couldn’t really tell.

It only took him a few seconds to pay, but then he ran in to someone familiar. Someone he hadn’t seen recently.

“Patrick! Where have you been buddy?”

Patrick attempted to smile but Pete could tell that something was wrong. “Pete, hey, what are you doing here?”

“Just grabbing something for my date.” Pete showed him the stuffed dog.

“Sweet.” Patrick replied. “I’m looking for my sister.” Though Pete and Patrick had hung out a handful of times Pete didn’t even know he had a sister.

“She hanging out around here?” Pete asked, surprised. It wasn’t really the right kind of hang out spot.

“Something like that.” Patrick muttered. “Anyway, I gotta go.”

“Yeah, me too.” Pete replied. “See you soon?”

“Not sure.” Patrick replied, frowning. “I’m kind of trying to get out of the game.” He admitted, thinking only of Avery.

Pete nodded. He gambled just for the hell of it, never wasting much money, but he knew people like Patrick wasted their whole life savings on shit like that. He’d been trying to get Patrick to quit for awhile, after considering him his friend.

“Good bro. Call me if you need anything, okay?” Pete gave him a friendly smile.

Patrick fought to return it, but barely could.

Pete let him go, and they went their separate ways.

Pete went back to Avery, as Patrick desperately searched for her.

Avery clicked the high heels to the floor three times, chuckling lightly as she closed her eyes and whispered the magic words. “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home-” She didn’t hear the door close behind Pete, but when he placed his keys on the table behind her she realized he was back.

Pete laughed, and Avery momentarily got caught in his lovely smile but then her eyes fell lower to the stuffed animal in his hands.

“For me?” She asked, surprised.

“Yes.” Pete extended the stuffy, and Avery’s fingers gently closed over it. “You look wonderful in those high heels. They really bring attention to your sexy legs.”

Avery blushed. “I was just trying stuff on… again, and waiting for you.”

Pete chuckled. “Sorry to leave you waiting.”

“But you’re back.” Avery replied. She gazed down at the soft stuffed animal. “Thank you.”

Pete nodded. “You thought I wouldn’t come back?”

“I wasn’t sure.” Avery admitted.

Pete stepped closer, gazing down at Avery. He stood just an inch or so taller than her. “To leave a lady as beautiful as you all alone for any time period at all should be a crime, and I wouldn’t willingly spend another minute away from you.”

Avery was caught off guard by the somewhat poetic admission.

“Should we have sex now?” Avery asked, blushing.

Pete laughed. “Are you horny?”

“I think so.” Avery replied. In all honesty she felt ready to have sex with Pete at any given moment. He made her feel dirty, in a deliciously new way. The whole prostitution thing wasn’t so bad with him, but the fear of when they were done still lingered in her mind.

Pete continued chuckling. “I am at your disposal.”

Avery noticed something at that moment. “Pete, did something happen?”

“When?” Pete asked, playfully.

“When you were out.” Avery traced a deep line along his neck, where his blood had dried. “You didn’t have this before… it’s like someone clawed at you.” She gasped, “Oh no, I didn’t do that, did I?” She tried desperately to think of that happening at the shop they’d gone to but she couldn’t remember. Her mind had been a blur of lust.

Pete frowned, having forgotten about the incident. “We got a little rough. I’m just fine.” He lied. “Must’ve happened at the shop.”

Avery frowned. “I’m sorry. Can I clean it up?” Her desire for sex suddenly lowered at the sight of marks like that on Pete’s neck. For the life of her… she couldn’t remember making them.

“Thought you were gonna add some new ones?” Pete winked.

Avery blushed. “I’d never intentionally hurt you.”

Pete’s lips pulled up in to a smile as her words sank in. “You mean that?”

“Of course.” Avery replied.

Pete nodded, thinking over her words and how he could rotationally put them to use.
