I shut the door behind the moving company and turned around to survey my new environment. With Pete's things gone, this place was so incredibly lonely. I never would have imagined that it would come to this after almost 5 years of marriage. At least he hadn't mentioned a divorce yet. Pretty sure my world would fall apart if that happened.
I walked into my kitchen and poured myself a cup of chocolate flavored coffee, from the coffee maker that Pete had given me a couple years ago for my birthday. I hated having to run to Starbucks every morning to get my fix, so Pete rectified the situation for me. He loved using this coffee maker too. Just looking at it is depressing.
I sat down on the couch and curled my legs up under me and grabbed my phone. I thought I'd let Pete know the status of his belongings.
Kiley: movers just left. your stuff should be in LA soon.
I stared at the phone for almost 2 minutes before a response came through.
Pete: k
That was it. All the response I was going to get. I let out a shaky sigh and closed my eyes to hold in the tears. I took a minute to calm my emotions before grabbing my laptop and opening it up. I had some work to catch up on. I had been promoted from a columnist at Cosmo to the website editor about a year ago and it took up most of my time. That was a huge issue with Pete, especially since he and Fall Out Boy got back together within that time frame. He wanted me to travel with him, but I couldn't ever be gone for more than a couple days every few months. Then there was the baby argument. He wanted to start having children and I didn't. I wasn't ready to put my career on hold just yet. I wanted a few more years.
After I finished my coffee, I felt a little light headed. My emotions were totally wrecking havoc on my health. I was always tired and would feel sick to my stomach pretty often. I am definitely not handling Pete and I's separation well. All of our little issues just seemed to snowball and I was too busy to address them. To be honest, if I had know that they were such important issues to Pete, I would have. Pete just kept his frustrations inside instead of telling me what he was truly feeling.

The next morning I headed into work still feeling the emotional sting from Pete having his belongings removed from the New York City apartment that we used to share, until a month ago. I got to my office and set my things down before walking to the coffee maker.
"Kiley, Caroline asked me to send you to her office when you got here," my secretary Natalie stated.
"Oh, ok. Thanks Natalie. I'll head on up. I have a meeting in 5 minutes, so please let the team know I'll be a few minutes late." I replied.
"Oh, um... they already started the meeting." She said nervously. Huh?
"What?" I said, totally confused and I looked into the meeting room and saw my team of writers and web designers carrying on without me. My stomach suddenly dropped. I was getting fired, wasn't I? I turned and immediately headed to Caroline's office.
"Kiley, sit, please." She gestured to the chairs in front of her desk. She had a folder on her desk with my name on it. I sat down and took a deep breath.
"You wanted to speak with me?" I asked, scared to hear what she was about to say.
"As you know, I've been meeting with you about your deficits over this past month and you haven't been improving at all. It seems as though you just aren't using the feedback I've provided. Web traffic is down and the team says that you haven't been open to new ideas." She stated.
"Caroline, I know this last month has been a horrible one for me, performance wise, and it's affecting the magazine. But I am going through some really painful issues at home. Pete's leaving me." I admitted to her for the first time. I hadn't told anyone really, except Amy and of course, Joe, my brother.
"Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. I know that personal issues can sometimes affect work performance, but it's been a month." She seemed like she felt bad about what she was about to do. "I have to let you go, Kiley. I'm sorry." She stated and pulled a form out of the folder in front of her. "This is the information on the severance package. You just need to look it over and sign. This is the notice of termination of employment that I need you to sign as well." She said in a gentle tone. She was trying to be as nice as possible about firing me, but it didn't help.
I signed the paper work, got copies and went to my office. Natalie was nowhere to be found. She was probably scared to see me, knowing that I was fired. I grabbed some empty boxes from the copy room and began clearing out my stuff. I had worked here for 4 years now. 4 years of stuff accumulated. I needed help getting these things home, so I texted Amy. She came up and helped me get everything home.
"Caroline sounds like a bitch," Amy proclaimed as she poured me a glass of wine. I gave a little laugh and sipped on the red wine. I really needed to relax. We sat down on the couch. "Have you told Pete?" She asked.
"No. He won't care." I said solemnly.
"Kiley! Yes he will! He isn't leaving you because he doesn't love you. He's upset that you guys have issues that need work. You both have been so busy." She was being nice.
"I just keep fucking everything up." I groaned and covered my face with my hands, crying quietly. Amy climbed over to my couch and hugged me, letting me cry for a few minutes.
"Let's go get a drink somewhere tonight and relax. You really need to let go of some of this tension. You'll feel better." She explained and I nodded. I didn't feel like getting drunk, but just going out and doing something would feel nice.
We went to some upscale bar. Amy convinced me to dress up. It was fall in New York City, so I opted for some knee high boots over skinny jeans and a long sleeve lace blouse. I put waves in my hair and put on some smokey eye makeup. I will admit I felt a little better just by looking hot. Amy looked super hot as well, just like always.
We sat at a tall table and ordered some beers from the waitress. I handed her my credit card when she returned and she smiled.
"I knew it was you! You're Pete Wentz's wife, right?" She asked me. Obviously a fan. I get this quite a bit lately, especially since their new CD is such a success.
"That's me," I smiled, hoping to conceal my pain. Pete and I had agree to keep our separation quiet because the tabloids would just hound us both.
"I'm a huge Fall Out Boy Fan. Your husband is amazing," she gushed and I nodded.
"I agree, obviously," I replied and she giggled.
"I even got this tattoo," she lifted the sleeve of her shirt and showed us her tattoo on her inner forearm. She had lyrics from 'Save Rock & Roll' in black ink.
"Pete will definitely want to see this," I said. Pete LOVED to see fan art and fan tattoos. I took out my phone and snapped a picture before sending it to him.
"Oh my god! I'm so excited." She giggled. She took a picture with me and then went back to work.
"Think he'll respond?" I asked Amy.
"Of course," she responded. I nodded and took a big drink of my beer. I asked her about the date she went on this past weekend to get off the topic of Pete. It was such a touchy topic for me and I didn't feel like ruining my makeup, we just got here! I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket a minute later.
Pete: awesome!
Kiley: i thought you'd enjoy seeing it. our waitress is a fan
Pete: who are you with?
Kiley: amy
It did feel nice that Pete was curious to know who I was with. He still cared about me in that sense. Not that Pete had anything to worry about. He was, and always will be the only one I want.
"Hey Kiley!" Gabe's voice rang in my ears. Oh yeah, except there's always the lingering feelings for my ex-fiance.
"Gabe! Hey!" I said and hugged him. "I haven't seen you since your wedding."
"I know, it's been a few months." He said with a smile. He looked gorgeous as always. "Hey Amy."
"Hey Gabe. Congrats, by the way." Amy said and gave Gabe a hug.
"Thanks." He smiled. "Mind if I join you girls? Erin is supposed to meet me here soon, but I'm a little early."
"Not at all." I said and he pulled a stool up to the table.
"I uh, I talked to Pete yesterday." Gabe said to me and I just nodded solemnly. "I'm so sorry, Kiley. I'm sure you guys will work through it." He said sincerely.
"I don't know. He treats me like an acquaintance more and more each day." I explained.
"You two are meant for each other. Don't worry." He said and rubbed my back gently. I felt a small tingle in my gut from his touch. A part of me still has feelings for Gabe and always wonders what could have been. "How's work?" He asked me and I cringed.
"She got fired today." Amy informed Gabe and he rubbed his face.
"Wow, I can't believe that. I'm sorry. God Kiley, rough week, huh?" He said and I nodded. "Have you told Pete?" He asked me.
"Nope. He won't care." I stated and Gabe shook his head.
"Yes he will. He still loves you Kiley."
"Can we talk about something else?" I asked, blinking back tears.
"Of course." Amy responded and started her story about her date back up. Gabe's wife eventually joined us and I had a decent time, that is, until I went home to my empty apartment. The one that holds so many good memories of Pete and I. I washed my makeup off and changed for bed. I climbed under the covers and hugged my pillow, wishing it was Pete instead. Eventually, the tears began to flow as I thought about all the shitty things I had done to bring this all on myself. I eventually cried myself to sleep.
