Chapter 11:

Two days had passed and Shinji was back in medical getting his injuries checked out. After the bandages were removed Ritsuko got a good look at the progress or lack thereof.

“Hmmm this is a concern” She commented more to herself than anything

“What’s wrong?” Shinji asked

“The wound on your back has healed but the one on your front is taking longer than expected” Ritsuko replied “Don’t worry there is no reason to be concerned I just want to make sure you heal up good”

“Oh ok, so what next?” Shinji asked

“I’m going to do an ultrasound there was no major damage inside but I want to make sure it’s all healed up properly” Ritsuko replied

Ritsuko dragged the ultrasound over from the corner of the room while Shinji lay down on the procedure table. The state of the art machine quickly giving a sharp image of Shinji’s insides showing no damage at all.

“Alright you’re ok on the ultrasound. Hold still and I’ll put a patch on the wound.” Ritsuko instructed

The process not taking long at all and once Shinji looked down there was a small white square with a clear cover on it and the edges of a scar that had already healed sticking out from under it.

“All set. Leave this on for a week and then you can take it off. That’s more than enough time for it to heal. Also I need a blood sample. I’ve got to make sure your S2 is ok because you seem to be taking longer than expected to heal more often lately I just want to make sure everything is ok” Ritsuko said

Shinji looked at her a little puzzled “Ok” He reluctantly agreed not knowing how Ritsuko was going to process the information

“Don’t worry it’s off book” Ritsuko reassured him to which she got a smile from the young pilot as he held his arm out to give the sample. “Ok you are all done here, be in the gym for a physical in one hour and then I will clear you for active duty again” Ritsuko said

“Yes doctor” Shinji replied as he put his shirt and jacket on and left.

“Enter” came the Sub-Commanders voice as he heard an unexpected knock on his desk

Looking as he saw Shinji walking in he said nothing.

“Sir I got your message” Shinji started but was silenced as the Sub-Commander held a finger up to his lips

“Very good son all I need to know is are you in or out for our game of poker tonight” The Sub-Commander replied

“In Sir” Shinji replied catching on

“Good now I have something I need to discuss with Pilot Ikari please have him here in 5 minutes” Fuyutsuki responded

“Yes Sir” Shinji replied and walked out

Returning 5 minutes later “Pilot Ikari reporting as ordered Sir” Shinji said walking in at attention and saluting the Sub-Commander

“Very punctual Pilot, at ease” The Fuyutsuki replied “Good to see you in uniform” He commented

“Come with me I have something to discuss” Fuyutsuki ordered

Making it out of the pyramid the Sub-Commander turned “My office is bugged you can’t talk about anything you don’t want the commander to hear in there” Fuyutsuki explained

“Yes Sir. I’m guessing your message is about him too” Shinji clarified

“It is him and a whole lot of others” Fuyutsuki clarified “I’m sorry the message was vague but it had to be, if you follow it you will find the right path to fulfil your mother’s legacy if you choose” He added

“I understand there is just one thing?” Shinji asked

“What’s that?”

“What was she like?” The young pilot asked desperate for anything about his mother

“She was amazing, my best student. She had the brightest mind and the most joyful infectious personality” Kozo replied getting nostalgic for times that were a lot better than now

“Whatever it is it must be real bad if it’s worse than the angels so I’ll do everything I can to stop it” Shinji replied

“That’s good to know I just want to know one thing. Why?” Kozo asked

“For the same reasons I pilot” Shinji replied

“Why do you pilot? You have put your life on the line so much already during the angel wars” Kozo asked

“I pilot to keep my sister and friends at Nerv and school safe. Misato... Rei... They are all I have and I will protect them from anything no matter the cost” Shinji declared

‘You are so much stronger than your father thinks and I am certain that will be his undoing’ The Sub-Commander thought.

“It’s good to have you on board” Fuyutsuki replied “So what else do you have at Nerv today?” He asked

“A physical in the gym then I’ll hit the range if I can pass that” Shinji replied

“Well I better let you get to it” The Sub-Commander replied

“Yes Sir and thank you.... For everything” Shinji replied as he turned and left

The old Sub-Commander watch the young pilot walk away in his casual uniform. He couldn’t see it but knew his pistol was in the back of his pants being covered by his bomber jacket. Yes Kaji would be a good guide for him and just maybe those two could help each other through what was coming.

“Rei I didn’t expect to see you here” Shinji replied as he ran into his sister at the locker rooms

“I have a routine check up with Doctor Akagi” She replied “What have you been up to here?” She asked not expecting to see Shinji either

“A check up and I just finished my physical” Shinji replied

“Looks like Dr. Akagi pushed you really hard” Rei commented seeing the large sweat stains on his gym gear

“Yeah her and the Commander” Shinji replied

“I see.” Rei replied

“Yeah, so what time will you be done? I’ll travel home with you if you like” Shinji replied

“I’ll be a couple of hours, I’ll call on your phone when I’m ready” Rei replied

“Alright, I’ll probably be in the range” Shinji replied

Shinji made it home from Rei’s place only a little later than normal having enjoyed the time he got to spend with his sister

“Where the hell have you been third I’m hungry” Asuka demanded as he walked through the door.

“Out” Came the reply

“Well get started on dinner I’m hungry and it’s your night too cook” Asuka demanded in a shrill voice

“I’ll start in a minute you could have always made something yourself you know” Shinji replied.

“Why would I do that, I’m a pilot not a cook” Asuka replied

“Right my mistake” Shinji replied

“Was that an apology?” Asuka asked in a menacing voice.

“No” Came the flat reply as Shinji shut the door to his room

Misato looked on concerned for her two young wards, they were barely working well enough together on the battlefield and everywhere else was worse at best. She knew Asuka was hiding behind a front but it was getting more and more abrasive and competitive and that was wearing Shinji down. She didn’t want to interfere but she was running out of options and if things didn’t improve soon she was worried something bad was going to happen.

“Shinji do you have a minute” Misato asked knocking on his door.

“Sure come in” Was the slightly muffled reply from inside.

Misato moved the door open and found Shinji with no shirt and a pair of sweat pants on. ‘Wow good thing the girls from his class aren’t here some of them would go wild over this sight’ Misato thought as the moon light on this cold night silhouetted the young pilots frame making him look gorgeous.

“How did your check up go?” Misato asked

“It was fine, the Commander was there and they pushed me real hard but I’m back on the active roster again” Shinji replied

“That’s good” Misato replied “Look Shinji I’ll get to the point you and Asuka are getting worse working together, living together was meant to help build a bond, you’re the two leading pilots we have and you two are hardly functioning as a team, what’s going on?” Misato added

“Ask Asuka she’s the one with a problem” Shinji replied

“You’ve figured out what she is like, why do you think it’s like it is?” Misato asked again

Shinji paused in his search for a t-shirt letting out a sigh as he considered his words carefully next.

“Yes I know what she is like, she hides behind a front to cover her pain and hide her emotions” Shinji replied “But I don’t know why it doesn’t work, maybe she’s too competitive for her own good” He added

“Alright but if you know that try to make it work....... For me?” She asked

“I really am trying Misato but the thing is she doesn’t get a free pass for everything either, she could at least show some respect to everyone around her, especially Rei” He replied

“That’s a fair point but please just try to make it work” Misato reaffirmed

“Don’t worry I will but now I need something from you” Shinji replied

“What is it?” Misato asked eagerly wanting to help as Shinji never asked for anything

“Do you have any concerns about Nerv?” Shinji asked

“What are you talking about?” Misato replied in a hush

“Nerv’s dealings, do you have any concerns.... Honestly” Shinji asked matching Misato’s hushed voice

Misato looked at her young ward for a moment, the boy she had come to think of as a son, this was a dangerous line of questioning and she thought for a moment to blow him off and say no but she remembered that people like Shinji only do something like this because they want to, and if Shinji was thinking like this he must know something and he would probably keep pursuing it.

“I have some” Misato replied carefully “What’s brought this on?” She asked

“I got a message” Shinji began “I don’t want to go into it now but it’s got me thinking and I was just wondering what you thought about Nerv is all” Shinji replied

“Well I’m in the dark about a lot of things like you Shinji” Misato replied “But I have my doubts about the higher ups at Nerv and their dealings” Misato replied without giving any details away

“Alright....... What about the Sub-Commander and Special Inspector Kaji?” Shinji asked

“What do you mean?” Misato asked

“What are they like? And can I trust them?” Shinji replied

“Well the Sub-Commander is very professional and I’ve never had any reason to doubt him, he actually helped approve the uniform you wear so proudly at Nerv, as for Kaji what does he have to do with this?” Misato asked defensively worrying about the safety of her ward

“Please Misato I’m not in any trouble I just want to know. I’ll tell you everything once I’m certain” Shinji replied

“Well I dated Kaji in college we were very close and I could trust him with my life, but since he’s been back something is different, he is more serious than I remember, and if I had more time with him it is almost like I could trust him even more now” Misato admitted now realising what had been eating away at her since seeing her old flame

“Do you still have feelings for him?” Shinji asked seeing the twinkle in her eye

“I don’t know but that’s a question for another night” Misato replied

“Alright, I’ll get started on dinner in a minute” Shinji replied

Misato nodded and left Shinji’s room with two big questions on her mind. What was Shinji up to and what did she feel for Kaji. The more she thought about it the more she would have to wait and see. She was sure Shinji could look after himself and stay out of trouble but she was always going to worry, and though she was loathe to admit it Kaji was more serious and less of a sleaze in their interactions since he came back to Tokyo-3

‘The best melons’ Shinji thought as he stood in front of the office of Special Inspector Ryoji Kaji with his hand up ready to knock on the door. Two raps starting his mission as it were on its way

“Come in” came the unshaven man’s voice from inside

Shinji walked in as Kaji spun around to face him in his chair. The smallest amount of surprise flashing through Kaji’s eyes but being the well trained man that he was this never filtered into any of his expressions.

“Shinji.... This is unexpected to what do I owe the pleasure?” Kaji replied easily

Shinji paused for a second and considered if he was making a mistake and whether he should stay out of all this and just ask Kaji to the range again but then pressed on “I received a message and I just need to know one thing” Shinji replied

“Interesting, and just what is that?” Kaji replied entertaining the notion

“I need to know who has the best melons, I was told you could answer this” Shinji replied

The statement was enough to tell Kaji so many things, firstly that this was not a conversation for a bugged office like his and secondly that he may just have gained a very strong and useful ally “Well that’s an easy question Shinji, Katsuragi has the best melons and I am just the guy to show you the way so come with me” He replied shutting his computer down and standing up to head out the door.

A small trek out of Nerv and into the geo-front had the inspector and pilot standing at Kaji’s melon patch

“You grow melons?” Shinji asked

“Yes it’s a hobby of mine I find it a good way to relax” Kaji replied “Look Shinji” He added getting serious and obtaining the young pilots undivided attention “There is so much more in that message you have then you realise. Where did it come from?” He asked

“Do I have to say?” Shinji asked

“No I can’t make you but if you want my help I want to know” Kaji replied

Shinji thought for a moment knowing that he was right there and from here on out things would not be the same “Sub-Commander Fuyutsuki” He replied

‘Now this is interesting’ Kaji thought “Alright there are lots of hidden codes in that message you have. Firstly the Sub-Commander thinks we can help each other out here. I’m searching for the truth and there are going to be times where I need help which is where you come in I guess.” Kaji explained

“What truths?” Shinji asked

“The truth about Nerv and its plan” Kaji replied “It’s not just here to defeat the angels, I’m close to finding out some things I just need a little more time and help” He added

“Alright I want to know the truth as well but what type of help do you need?” Shinji asked

“Well at present I’m investigating Nerv the Marduk institute and their associated companies, I need someone to watch my back while I do this” Kaji replied

“What do you mean watch your back?” Shinji asked

“Provide cover when I meat with targets, help with investigations, you know work with me and together keep each other safe” Kaji replied

“Alright, when do you want to start?” Shinji asked

“Right now” Kaji replied with a grin “Where do you keep your weapons?” Kaji asked

“My rifle is always at home unless I’m using it and the USP...” Shinji trailed off as he brought the pistol out for Kaji to see

“Good make sure that never changes” Kaji replied “Once you get into this things are going to get really dangerous for you. I’ll help you through as much as possible but there are going to be times when you are going to be on your own” He added explaining the gravity of what Shinji was getting into

“Alright I understand” Shinji replied

“Ok now two things, here is my number, give it to no one and call me if you’re ever in trouble” Kaji said handing Shinji a slip of paper. The young pilot nodded in understanding

“Second thing you’re going to need to learn hand to hand combat, it’s nothing like in the Eva and killing people is totally different to the angels but it’s going to happen. You still with me?” Kaji asked

“Absolutely I’m not turning back on this now” Shinji replied

“Good” Kaji replied, “Now I’ll make arrangements for some things and I have to continue my investigations, you should get back to your normal routine” Kaji instructed

“Alright, what else do you need me to do?” Shinji asked

“Send me your schedule we need to make time to train you up in hand to hand combat and apart from that do nothing out of the ordinary you don’t want to attract any unwanted attention” Kaji replied

“Ok. I’ll be in touch” Shinji said as the two left the melon patch

Ten days had passed since Shinji had been in touch with Kaji, they had identified two nights each week where Kaji could train Shinji. These nights were most productive as Kaji explained material from the investigations so far and Shinji was making good progress with his fighting skills.

The current dilemma he was facing was the usual one, staying awake in class. For the moment he was just managing. It had become obvious to Shinji that he had taken too much on. Between piloting and training at Nerv, working with Kaji and keeping up his skill level in the range and working on his fitness regime in the gym he was out of time. This left no room for school and that was about to become a painful reality as Hikari was handing back test scores for an exam Shinji had not studied for.

“A perfect score Rei that was very good work” Hikari said as she placed the paper down on Rei’s desk

“Thank you Class Representative Horaki” Rei replied

“Please see me after class Shinji” Hikari said as she left the paper on Shinji’s desk and moved onto the next student

Rei turned around to look at her brother and he just held up his test showing 15% in red writing on the top and Rei knew exactly the problem

“Are you ok Shinji?” Rei asked

“Yeah I’m fine” He replied tiredly

“Meet me at the gates once Hikari is done with you” Rei replied quietly

Shinji nodded and waited for the minutes to count down to complete the end of the school day. As the bell rang and the students filed out the room as quick as possible Shinji stayed put and waited for Hikari. When he saw her sitting at her desk with some more papers he got up and walked over

“What did you want to see me for?” Shinji asked deciding to get this over with as quickly as possible

“Your scores are getting worse Ikari 15% that’s pathetic, if your scores don’t improve very quickly your guardian will be notified of your continued poor grades” Hikari replied

“You might as well tell her now they aren’t going to get any better” Shinji replied

“What about a study group or some tutoring?” Hikari asked

“We’ve been through this before, I don’t have time and it’s not going to work” Shinji replied

“Did you even study for this test?” Hikari asked

“No” Shinji replied flatly

“You have to at least try Shinji” Hikari tried to reason with the young pilot

“I am trying” Shinji replied

“Then you need to try more, your education is just as important as everything else you are doing” Hikari responded frustration flickering through her eyes at the boy she was starting to care for more than normal

“Trust me it’s not, and I’m putting as much time towards my education as I can, now if there is nothing else I need to get going I have a lot to do” Shinji replied fed up with the conversation

Hikari said nothing to this, she was so frustrated and could not believe this boy, he was capable of so much more and here he was throwing the rest of his life and his future away. Hikari stood up as Shinji was half way to the door. “Shinji” No response “Shinji!” Still nothing as the young pilot made it to the lockers

Hikari was closing the distance quickly now and placed a hand on his shoulder spinning him around. Her body was moving without thinking she just had to get through to the young man. She pushed him back into his locker with a bang then without notice her right hand flew across his left cheek a loud crack echoing through the empty corridor

“I will not sit by and watch you throw your life away like this. If you want Major Katsuragi involved fine” She replied storming back into the class room packing her bag and racing out.

Shinji stood there a moment then packed his things and left

“Do I need to ask what Hikari wanted brother?” Rei asked as she met him at the gates.

“No I think it clear what she wanted. 15%” Shinji reminded his sister

“The why was she running past here crying?” Rei asked

“She was crying?” Shinji replied taken by surprise

“Yes” Rei replied quietly

Shinji proceeded to repeat the events to Rei and she actually seemed to understand. Rei’s incredibly smart mind quickly putting the pieces together before Shinji and Hikari could themselves.

“She likes you” Rei replied

“What? That’s impossible” Shinji replied “Look at how she is with me” He added

“Normally I would agree with you but the way she is with you is because she cares, she never tries this hard with anyone else who is struggling with their grades” Rei countered

Shinji thought on that for a moment, it kind of made sense in a weird girl kind of a way.

“She likes you like you like her” Rei repeated getting Shinji’s attention

“What are you talking about?” Shinji replied a little too defensively.

“I have seen the way you look at her when you’re not sleeping” Rei replied “At first I thought it was Pilot Soryu but then you were so adamant it was not her and seeing your interactions with the Second Child this made sense so that only leaves Hikari” Rei replied matter of factly

Shinji realised his sister had figured it out, probably in a second. “Alright let’s say you’re right, then what?” Shinji asked

“Only you can figure that out” Rei replied cryptically.

“Alright” Shinji replied

While Rei had been able to figure it out that was the one question she didn’t have an answer for as she just didn’t know enough about those types of things yet.

Shinji walked Rei home grateful for the distraction from his argument with Hikari

“Good night brother, I know you are busy but come around for dinner soon” Rei said with a smile

“Sure thing” Shinji replied smiling back at his sister

“Don’t forget we have a simulation test tomorrow” Rei reminded her brother

“Yeah, have a good night sister, I’ll see you tomorrow” Shinji replied

“I’m home Shinji called out as he closed the door and left his shoes there and immediately picked up on the extra pair of black shoes at the door ‘I wonder who is visiting Misato never said anything about a guest’ Shinji thought as he headed into the apartment with his book bag.

Surprise flashed across his face as he saw Misato, Hikari and Asuka sitting at the table and they all levelled different stares and glares at him.

“I’m going to my room” Shinji said trying to get out of what was coming

“Not so fast Mr” Misato replied

“Alright, just let me get rid of my book bag” He settled for

At least he could buy himself a couple of minutes to compose himself and prepare for the chewing out that was coming. Walking back out and taking the last available seat at the table Shinji sat down and said nothing.

“What do you have to say for yourself?” Misato asked

“About what?” Shinji replied

“Your grades you only scored 15% on a test today” Misato replied staying calm.

Hikari looked on interested in what Shinji was going to reply with, Asuka was grinning widely loving that Shinji was about to get a grilling over his grades, something she easily had Shinji bested at.

“I’ve prioritised my responsibilities Nerv before school” Shinji replied

“You still need to do better at school than you are, what do you need Shinji? Hikari is right your education is important” Misato replied

“I don’t need anything, my time is taken up with everything I need to be doing” Shinji replied

“You just heard Misato your education is important” Hikari interjected

“I know that but like Misato knows my education won’t keep me alive during this war so there are some things that are more important” Shinji countered

“Misato?” Hikari pleaded

“Sorry Hikari he is right the things he does at Nerv will always take priority” Misato replied “However that doesn’t mean that you can just ignore your education either” Misato added to the displeasure of Shinji

“What are you talking about Misato I’m not hiding behind anything” Shinji replied

“Good then you will take tutoring with Hikari” Misato replied

“What? I don’t have time for that” Shinji replied just keeping control of his voice

“You can make time Shinji” Asuka piped in

“Shut-up Asuka” Shinji retorted

“No Shinji you do need to make time for it ok” Misato replied

“Remember what I spoke to you about the other night Misato” Shinji reminded his guardian just how pressed for time he is

“Yes I remember I’m not holding you to a deadline but you do need to put some effort in and Hikari has offered her help which I think you should take” Misato replied

“Fine, I’ll take the tutoring” Shinji replied not happy with this change of events but knowing he was not going to win this argument

“Now that that’s settled let’s stop wasting Hikari’s time come on Hikari” Asuka replied as she got up to go to her room “Let us know when dinner is ready Baka” Asuka added over her shoulder

“Why are you doing this Misato?” Shinji asked

“I know your thoughts on college but everywhere else has standards for entry into the work force and 15% doesn’t cut it” Misato replied “This is for your benefit this time Shinji” Misato reiterated

“Alright just don’t expect miracles” Shinji replied

“Only with weapons” Misato replied with a smirk

Shinji just got up to make dinner with a shake of his head.

The day of the simulation test saw the three pilots in a clean room. This was unusual but what was more unusual was that they had to strip to complete the test.

“Whatttt?!!! You want me to take my clothes off again” Asuka complained in her grating voice.

“The next chamber is an ultra clean room environment simply taking a shower and changing your undergarments is insufficient” Ritsuko replied

“Why do I have to go through all this for a dumb auto-pilot test?” Asuka complained again

“With the advance of time comes the need for the advancement of Eva technology, to do so we need a constant influx of new data. Now get undressed” Ritsuko ordered

“Yes ma’am” Came Shinji and Rei’s reply as Asuka continued to groan and whinge

“Alright I’m here just the way you want me but naked and run through the wash cycle seventeen times” Asuka complained

“Very good and I want all three of you to stay that way as you board the entry plugs” Ritsuko reminded the pilots

“What!!” Asuka got out seeing the surveillance camera on the wall.

“Don’t worry we respect your privacy the cameras have been turned off” Ritsuko replied knowing Asuka’s gripe

“That’s not the point this is a personal thing” Asuka retorted

“The purpose of this experiment is to monitor your synchronisation and harmonics without the interference of your plug suits” Ritsuko continued

“Asuka this is an order” Misato interjected in a voice that left no room for argument

“Fine but make sure the baka pervert doesn’t perve on me” Asuka spat out

“As if I would want to” Shinji retorted getting fed up with the antics of his co-pilot.

“Look I don’t care how you three work it out just get it sorted we need to start the experiment” Ritsuko replied

“Fuck this” Shinji muttered to himself pushing the doors to his stall open and striding across the corridor of the clean room not caring anymore. The tension of the last few days starting to take it’s tole on him.

Rei followed her brother leaving the red head flabbergasted as she stood in the stall waiting for the other two to make it to the end of the corridor. Shinji heard Rei’s footsteps following him along the corridor and smiled to himself.

“Hey Asuka” Came the young pilots voice

“What?” She snapped

Shinji just raised his right hand and flipped her off

“Very mature Third” Asuka spat

“I’m not the one still standing in my stall” He replied.

Asuka just growled and just followed her two co-pilots down the hall.

Once the pilots were loaded into the plugs they were inserted into the simulation bodies.

“Connecting the systems with the simulation bodies” came a techs voice

“The simulation plug is now under the Magi control” Maya reported

“Man that was fast, the Magi are magnificent, it’s hard to believe that the first test took a whole week” Misato commented

“Test duration will be three hours” came another techs voice

“How does it feel?” Ritsuko asked

“It feels fuzzy” Rei offered

“Something is wrong my right arm feels normal everything else feels weird” Asuka replied

“It’s different to Eva but it’s expected I guess” Shinji replied

“Rei concentrate on trying to move the right hand” Ritsuko ordered

“Yes ma’am” Rei replied and began her task.

“Begin recording all of Shinji’s data now” Ritsuko whispered to Maya who nodded in reply.

“Shinji what do you feel?” Ritsuko asked

“I feel like I’m sitting in a tank of water” Shinji replied

“Ma’am look at this” Maya got Ritsuko’s attention

“This is incredible, how does he do it” Ritsuko murmured to herself

“What is it?” Misato asked

“Shinji’s readings he is in perfect synchronisation with the simulation plug, that should be impossible” Ritsuko replied

“Nothing is impossible with Shinji” Misato commented

“Are you reading this?” Fuyutsuki asked Aboa

“Yes sir these are the parts that were installed three days ago, the parts that are showing discoloration, with some magnification you can see the discoloration” Aboa replied pulling the image up on his screen for the Sub-Commander to see.

“The 87th protein wall” Fuyutsuki replied

“It’s got to be corrosion there is temperature variation and conduction rates of the spots, the clean rooms have been deteriorating a lot lately” Makoto replied

“The construction time was cut by 60 days so it’s possible some air bubbles might have gotten inside. B Wings construction is rather sub standard” Aboa added

“Well this instillation was thrown up after the angels arrived” Fuyutsuki replied

“It’s no one’s fault everyone was just so tired back then” Makoto added

“Well just fix it by tomorrow or Ikari will chew our asses for it” Fuyutsuki ordered

“Understood” was the reply from the two techs

“Another leak?” Ritsuko asked Maya who was on the phone

“No it’s some kind of corrosion on the protein wall” Maya replied

“Just great could it affect this test?” Ritsuko asked

“No, not at the moment ma’am” Maya replied

“Then let’s continue we can’t abort experiments because of minor technical problems. Ikari would chew our asses off” Ritsuko replied

“Understood Synchronisation position is correct” Maya replied

“Connecting simulation bodies to Evas via simulation plugs” came a tech voice

“Contact with evas confirmed”

“A.T Field will generate on 2”

“ALERT” “ALERT” “ALERT” Alarms and lights started flashing on consoles throughout the room

“What’s happening?” Ritsuko asked

“Contamination alert it’s in Sigma Unit on the A Floor” Came a techs voice

“The 87th protein wall is corroding and releasing heat” “Abnormality in 6th pipe is detected as well” Came two techs replies

“Corrosion of the protein wall is increasing at an incredible rate” Maya replied pulling up a graphic showing the corrosion growing rapidly “It’s spreading everywhere”

“Abort the test shut of all flow through the 6th pipe” Ritsuko ordered

“Right” Maya replied hitting a switch that physically disconnected the 6th pipe.

“Numbers 60, 38 and 39 are all hermitically sealed” came a techs report

“Corrosion present in numbers 6 through 42” came the reply

“It’s no good the corrosion effect is spreading along the walls” Maya reported

“Deploy polyphomes” Ritsuko ordered

The small robots moving into the test tank

“Set laser power at maximum zap every invasive particle” Ritsuko ordered

“Corrosion has reached 6 through 58 it’s here” Maya reported

Everyone looked on in anticipation wanting to see what had stopped the experiment so abruptly and put the room on edge. Just as the silence started to drag out

“Arraaghhuh!!” Rei screamed out as the arm of her simulation body slammed against the wall

“Rei!” Ritsuko cried out

Rei’s simulation body started moving trying to reach out with its arm and pull itself away from its restraints in the one motion.

“Rei’s simulation body is moving” Maya replied

“Impossible” Ritsuko replied running over to her protégée’s terminal to look at the readings

“The corrosion is still spreading it’s invading the simulation bodies active water system” Maya reported

As the corrosion spread further and further into the tank Rei’s simulation body reached out with its arm towards the control room the massive hand outstretched to cause a massive amount of damage. Ritsuko was quicker pulling the emergency release leaver detonating explosive bolts on the arm causing it to sever and bounce harmlessly of the front wall of the control room.

“How’s Rei?” Misato asked immediately

“Rei’s fine no injuries at all” Maya replied

“Eject the entry plugs get them out of there immediately, and use the lasers” Ritsuko ordered

The three plugs rocketing out of the test chamber, the pilots being pinned into their seats similar to a launch but with a lot less force.

The lasers firing at the corrosion but nothing happened, until the dust cleared and that familiar orange hexagonal field came into view

“That’s an A.T Field!!” Misato cried out in surprise

“Impossible it can’t be” Ritsuko murmured not believing what she was seeing.

“Is is that....” Misato stammered out

“Pattern analysis is blue. ID confirmed an angel” Ritsuko replied as the Angel alarm started blaring throughout the base.

“An angel? You let an angel get inside these facilities!” Fuyutsuki said down the phone

“I’m sorry sir” Misato replied

“No time for excuses” Fuyutsuki replied as Commander Ikari rose on an elevator in the background “I want a physical shutdown of Central Dogma, isolate it from Sigma Unit” Fuyutsuki ordered

“Evacuate the box everyone get out of here” Misato ordered as the windows started cracking on the control centre

Everyone started racing out of the room apart from Ritsuko who stood there unable to believe how badly events had gone.

“What are you waiting for come on” Misato yelled at her friend grabbing her and dragging her out just in time.

“So that’s the new angel. Better make the most of this opportunity I think” Kaji said to himself as he evacuated

Shinji opened a com window with Unit-00’s simulation plug

“Rei... Are you ok?” He asked

Rei looked across to her brother “I am uninjured” She replied

“Are you sure it looked pretty bad for you in there” Shinji replied

“Synchronisation with the simulation body is not the same as with the eva. I didn’t feel the arm being blown off the simulation body” Rei replied

“Ok I was just worried” Shinji replied

“I’m ok, you should save you power till we are rescued” Rei replied

“Alright” Shinji replied as the window closed then his plug was plunged into darkness “Great” He sighed

A red LED came on giving the plug a small glow then another com window came up

“Sorry to do that to you Shinji” came Kaji’s voice

“Mr Kaji?” Shinji asked

“Yes, an angel is attacking its some kind of organic computer that Ritsuko is handling, we have an opportunity” He replied

“Alright what’s the plan?” Shinji asked.

“I’m coming with supplies we need to check out some offices and a couple of labs, just swim to shore” Kaji replied

“Alright I’ll get Rei to cover for me” Shinji replied

“Can you trust her?” Kaji asked

“Implicitly it will be fine” Shinji replied

“Alright just be quick I’m almost there” Kaji replied ending the call and allowing the entry plug to cycle power back on.

Shinji pulled a com window to Rei again “Rei I’m going to look for a way out of here I’ll be back” He said

“Are you sure about this?” Rei replied

“Yeah I just need you to cover for me” Shinji replied

“No problem, just be careful brother” Rei replied

“I always am” With that the com window closed and Shinji popped the hatch on the entry plug and stood up. It was not going to be too long a swim to shore but the weather had been getting colder since about the tenth angels attack and the Geo-Front was no different.

‘This is going to suck’ The young pilot thought but didn’t give himself any more time to consider it as he dived into the freezing cold lake and made the swim to shore. He put all the practice Rei had given to him to good use making his swim stroke as efficient as possible, reaching the shore quickly Shinji hid in some bushes.

“Shinji?” He heard Kaji’s voice near by

“Over here” Shinji replied quietly

“Ah there you are” Kaji replied “Hold your arm up” Kaji instructed

Shinji did as he was told and felt a towel fly into his palm. “Thanks” He replied and dried himself off. Coming out with the towel around his waist he found his new partner in front of his position.

“You’ll need these” Kaji replied handing Shinji clothes and a bullet proof vest.

“Urban combat fatigues you shouldn’t have” Shinji replied wasting no time getting dressed

He then realised Kaji was dressed the same. “So what’s all this about Kaji?” Shinji asked once he was dressed.

“I’ll explain on the way and its Ryoji now that we are partners” Kaji replied helping Shinji with his vest “How does that feel?” He asked

“A little stiff but its comfortable” Shinji replied pulling knee and elbow guards on and pulling boots on

“Good and its better than getting shot” Kaji replied “Take these he said handing Shinji a gun 4 clips and a flash light.

“Thanks” Shinji replied taking a closer look at the pistol he realised it was a USP45 “Where did you get this?” Shinji asked

“Not from your locker” Kaji replied “But you can keep it, it’s a spare for you, we’ll find somewhere safe for it later. Let’s get going” He said

The two partners started running towards the pyramid taking a secret entrance that Shinji had never seen, it had them taking ventilation shafts until they were able to drop down in front of an elevator Shinji didn’t recognise.

Kaji pushed the button to call for the elevator “Everyone will be busy with the angel for at least a few hours, we need to sneak in and check a few labs and offices for information on the Marduk Institute” Kaji explained as they were waiting for the elevator

“Ok so what are we looking for?” Shinji asked

“We aren’t going to look we are just going to take copies of every computer and electronic document in the three labs and two offices and photo’s of anything with the Marduk logo on it” Kaji explained

“Ok sounds good but what about cameras?” Shinji asked

“Everything has been disabled but put this on in case we run into security” Kaji said handing Shinji a combat balaclava. It was all grey with the print of a skulls jaw and nose across the front. Shinji smiled at it before pulling it on, a pair of glasses with a single yellow lens to cover his eyes and hide his identity from anyone who might recognise him. Kaji did the same only his balaclava was all grey and he had a red lens on his glasses.

The two stepped into the elevator and headed down. Coming out in a dark corridor they carefully moved down with their flash lights only lighting up the shortest distance in front of them so as to not arouse suspicion. Shinji realised the glasses had an extra purpose they magnified low light levels making it easier to see.

Making it a fair way into the complex Kaji killed his light and Shinji followed suit. The two silently moving along until they heard footsteps approaching their position, they began looking up and down the corridor for somewhere to hide as the steps grew louder and louder.

“In here” Shinji whispered pushing his way through a glass lab door, the two taking cover behind a bench as a flash light made its way down the corridor and past their position.

“Good work Shinji” Ryoji let out a breath once the danger passed. “This is the first lab start looking around just be quiet so we can hear any patrols returning and keep your light pointed down” He instructed

“Sure thing” Shinji replied getting to work searching through draws.

Kaji quickly located the computer and plugged a small black box into it. While he was not the best at hacking he didn’t need to be in this case as his little device was a god send forcing its way into any computer undetected and taking a copy of everything on the hard drive secure, encrypted or unprotected files it didn’t matter.

“Got your camera?” Shinji asked

“Yes what have you got?” Kaji asked walking over to Shinji’s bench

“No idea but it’s got the Marduk emblem on the top” Shinji replied

“Here top button takes the images just capture one document per frame” Kaji instructed heading back to the black box plugged into the computer

Shinji started snapping away using his flash light to illuminate the documents when a beep and a green light let Kaji know that he was done.

“You finished?” Kaji asked

“Yeah” Shinji replied keeping his voice quiet.

“Let’s move on” Kaji replied seeing Shinji was packed up

The two made their way back out into the corridor down and around a corner checking for security as they went, finding no one they made it easily to the next lab, following the same routine Kaji quickly located the computer while Shinji was rifling through draws and closets looking for anything.

He also found the first office attached to the lab but came up empty not even a computer, so he went back to searching draws.

“Can you plug this into your black box?” Shinji asked holding up a memory stick

“Yes but the transfer will take longer doing two things at once” Kaji replied as Shinji tossed the memory stick to him.

The spy quickly plugged it in “Do you have anything else?” He asked

“No I’ve got nothing” Shinji replied moving towards the door

“Where are you going? We have to stick together” Kaji asked

“I’ll keep watch while you finish up” Shinji replied dropping to one knee as he brought his gun up and swept the corridor looking down his sights all the time. First he could hear footsteps then he saw two flash lights coming at them

“Two guards coming straight at us hurry up” Shinji whispered

“Move into the lab if they come for us kill them quietly” Kaji ordered

“But they are just guards” Shinji replied taking cover behind a lab bench

“No they aren’t they are section 2 elite they are in on everything the commander is doing, do not hesitate in killing them if you must” Kaji explained

“Alright” Shinji replied

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that” Kaji replied with a small grin trying to ease his young partners concerns.

While Kaji had no problems with taking a life he was worried about Shinji. Killing giant aliens in a giant robot was one thing but taking another life was something different, he hated to put the young man in this position but it was necessary.

Just as the guards were passing their position the black box finished its work a green light and a beep sounding.

“Did you hear that?” One guard asked.

“Yeah it came from that lab” The second guard replied

“Let’s go check it out” The first replied

The two men moving into the lab sweeping the area with their flash lights, Kaji produced a series of hand signals that finished with fists on top of each other twisting and then a finger against his mouth indicating silence. Shinji nodded and waited for Kaji’s signal to go as the spy manoeuvred around his bench to take down the guard approaching his position.

Shinji pulled his pistol and ejected a round throwing it across the room to the far corner it made a small tink as it hit the floor then the glass wall the flashlights from the guards instantly picking up on it as the drew their weapons and drew their attention away from Kaji as he closed in. The spy expertly covered the mouth of the guard before taking him down to the ground with a thud as they struggled against each other.

The second guard turned when he heard the sound but it made no difference as Shinji whipped him with his pistol causing the guard to hit the ground hard and drop his own pistol. The guard turned around and seeing Shinji’s height grinned and pulled his knife and using his extra weight lunged at Shinji pinning him onto his back as he pushed the knife closer to him.

Kaji looked on still struggling to get his guard into the position he wanted so he could snap his neck, he was a little worried for the young man but not desperate yet if he held his nerve he could get out of it. As this thought processed Shinji’s right arm flew across with incredible speed snapping the forearm of the guard holding the knife, the bone instantly sticking out of the skin. He rolled the guard onto his back clamping his left hand onto the guard’s mouth to muffle the scream and quickly pressed onto the broken limb causing the guard to drop the knife. Shinji finished it quickly by grabbing the knife and sticking it in the guard’s neck severing the vocal cords in the process. He left the guard to bleed out and turned to help Kaji only to see him snap the guard’s neck with a loud crack.

Both men breathed a sigh of relief. “Come on let’s get out of here” Kaji replied

“What about the other office and lab?” Shinji asked

“We have enough information to sort through for now, better to come away with something than be caught and have nothing” Kaji replied “Besides we’ve been gone two hours you better get back to the plug” Kaji replied

The two men made their way back out of the lab complex taking the same route. They didn’t encounter any resistance or patrols on the way out.

Stopping by the boat shed Kaji acquired a jeep and zodiac and headed back to the lake. The two launched the zodiac and Kaji put his hand on Shinji’s shoulder getting him to stop a moment.

“I’ll wait here and drive you back to headquarters, tell the girls you were looking for a boat there are two towels and a heap of blankets up front.” Kaji instructed

“Alright” Shinji replied

“Also once you drop them off at the locker rooms stash the pistol behind the head rest of your pilots seat in Unit-01’s entry plug it will be safe there and you should be able to do it without being seen” The spy added

“Sure and thanks for everything Ryoji” Shinji replied

“No thank you I couldn’t have done it without you Shinji, and great work tonight” The spy added

“Thanks, that means a lot coming from you” Shinji replied

“Alright now get going” Kaji replied.

Shinji nodded and gunned the engine the little zodiac quickly skipping across the lake. Pulling up next to Rei’s plug Shinji knocked on the wall hard before popping the hatch.

“Rei are you ok” Shinji asked once the LCL had drained out

“I am fine” came the reply as Rei stood up not worried about her state of dress.

“Here catch” Shinji said throwing her a towel as Rei wrapped herself in it and dried off she then boarded the zodiac and took a seat and got wrapped up in a couple of blankets.

“Thank you brother” Rei replied

“It’s no problem” Shinji replied moving onto Asuka’s plug

Banging on the wall hard before releasing the hatch and again Shinji waited for the LCL to drain out

“What the hell is the meaning of this!!?” Asuka screamed out

“Shut up Asuka just stick your hand up and I’ll throw you a towel” Shinji called out

When he saw the red heads hand rise up over the side he threw two towels at her.

“Thanks I guess” came the reply “What are you doing anyway?” She asked

“Getting us out of here unless you want to keep waiting around for a rescue team” Shinji replied

“Have you got clothes?” Asuka asked

“Just blankets” Shinji replied throwing two at the red head

“I guess it will do” She grumbled making her way onto the zodiac wrapped in the blankets.

Rei sat next to Shinji and Asuka sat up front as Shinji made the short trip back to shore at a much more sedate pace than before.

“You know Shinji Urban grey suits you” Rei commented seeing her brother’s attire.

“You think so?” Shinji replied

“Yes I do” Rei replied softly “Thanks for getting us, I had never known what it was like to be so bored until now” She added.

“It’s no problem” Shinji replied with a small smile for his sister.

Getting to shore Asuka’s mood brightened considerably when she saw Kaji there “Kaji hi” Asuka called out trying to drop one side of the blanket off her shoulder.

“Hi Asuka, Rei, how are you two doing?” The spy asked

“I am uninjured.” Rei replied “Thank you for the rescue” She added

“No worries. Hop in and we can get going” Kaji replied

Asuka sat up front with Kaji and Rei jumped in the back while Shinji secured the zodiac on the trailer.

“So where are we going Kaji?” Asuka asked once they started heading towards the pyramid

“The locker rooms you guys can get showered and warm before hypothermia sets in” Kaji replied not even looking at the red head.

He could see Asuka deflate in his peripherals but knew it was best in the long run, things were just going to get more dangerous from here out and she needed to drop the school girl crush.

Arriving at the locker rooms the girls piled out and raced for the showers. “Shinji here is all your stuff from tonight stow it in your locker for another time” He said with a grin as he handed a backpack to Shinji

“Thanks Ryoji” Shinji replied taking the pack

“Don’t forget about the spare” Kaji reminded the young pilot

“I’ll do it now” Shinji replied

Heading into Nerv he heard Kaji taking off in another direction towards the bridge. Quickly stowing the backpack in his locker Shinji decided he could go through it later and see what Kaji left for him. The young pilot exited and made his way to the cages where Unit-01 was resting. Even in the cages the purple war machine looked angry and devastating. Shinji took it all in as he made his way for the entry plug.

Grabbing a screw driver a technician had left out off a bench he got to work on opening the side panel on the head rest. It came away easily; Shinji then loaded a full clip into the pistol and left a spare in the headrest with the gun. He then closed the panel.

“Pilot Ikari... What are you doing here?” Came the voice of a technician

“I heard some rattling coming from the head rest last time the plug was on the crane I just thought I’d tighten the screws” Shinji replied

“You don’t have to do that Pilot Ikari just put things like that to Han and we can take care of it for you” The technician replied

“Oh I just didn’t want to make anymore work for you guys, you’re already doing so much” Shinji replied

“It’s ok Pilot Ikari it is what we are here for” The technician replied.

“Ok but please call me Shinji” Shinji replied

“Alright Shinji, I’m Ryouske Sakamoto” The technician replied “Call me Ryouske”

“Alright Ryouske anyway I better get going” Shinji replied

“See you around”

Shinji went straight back to the locker rooms hoping that his secret would stay safe he hit the showers before the LCL became impossible to remove. After finishing up in the shower he sat on the bench in the locker rooms with a towel around his waist. He pulled the bag Kaji left for him out of his locker.

Going through the bag he found his bullet proof vest. Setting it down he found his balaclava and glasses along with the knife that he had used to kill the guard down in the labs. Shinji wondered about what had happed during the mission, he had killed the guard instantly and had no regrets later about it. He knew it was the right thing to do and Kaji had explained they were implicit in what was going on down there so it was them or him.

Shinji put the bag back in his locker as a knock on the wall leading into the locker rooms brought him out of his line of thought

“Shinji you in here?” came Shigeru’s voice

“Yeah in here” Replied Shinji

“Misato is looking for you she needs to update you guys on the angel situation” came the reply

“I’m just getting dressed I’ll be out in a minute” Shinji replied

“Alright everyone is in conference 1” Shigeru instructed

“No worries I’ll see you there” Shinji replied

Shinji found everyone in conference 1 as the debriefing was about to begin. He took a seat next to Rei at the back of the room.

Seeing his sister in her casual uniform she looked really nice he wondered whether she was going to find a boyfriend, she knew what he was thinking about women before he knew so what was she thinking when it came to men.

“Brother” Rei whispered as Misato lead the debriefing

“Yes sister?” Shinji replied equally as quiet.

“What happened tonight?” She asked “You were gone for two hours and come back with a boat and urban combat fatigues” Rei added to make her point

“I had to find Kaji to hot wire the jeep and drive it. It took a while” Shinji replied

“What about the blood on the back of your hand?” Rei asked

Shinji looked at his hand and saw faint traces of blood from when he killed the guard “I must have scratched it loading the zodiac onto the trailer” Shinji offered lamely

“Just be careful brother you’re all the family I have, I hope if you’re in trouble you will come to me” Rei replied

“I’m not in any trouble sister” Shinji replied “And I know I can trust you with anything I’ll come to you if I’m ever in any trouble like you would to me right?” Shinji replied honestly

“Of course” Rei replied

The siblings sat there quietly enjoying being there together as Misato with the help of Ritsuko finished the debriefing and everyone left

“How about dinner at my place tonight brother?” Rei asked in her quiet voice as Shinji was about to get up.

“Sure” He replied with a smile “Just let me go tell Misato and we can get going” He added looking forward to spending some descent time with his sister.

“Misato” Shinji said once he was next to his guardian.

“What’s up Shinji? Enjoy the debriefing?” Misato replied

“Yeah it was great” Shinji replied with a smile “It’s not my night to cook so I’m going to have dinner at Rei’s then come home” He added

“No problem, stay safe” Misato replied

“Always” Shinji replied with a grin before heading back to Rei as the siblings left

“Shinji and Rei seem to have grown closer since they found out they are related” Ritsuko commented to Misato

“Yeah I think it’s been good for Shinji” Misato replied

“That’s nice I’m glad these kids can be happy some of the time after everything they have been through” Ritsuko replied

“You’re tellin me Rits” Misato replied “Say how about a drink tonight since you’re an angel killer now?” Misato asked

“Sorry I can’t maybe another time” Ritsuko replied

“You are no fun Ritsuko” Misato replied

“Sorry but I have a lot to do” Ritsuko replied as she turned to leave

Shinji got home late and strolled in through the front door, leaving his shoes there he headed for his room.

“Where have you been baka?” came the voice of Germany’s fury.

“Out” Shinji replied not stopping for a chat.

“Where is dinner?” Asuka demanded.

“I don’t care it’s not my night to cook” He replied walking through his bedroom door and closing it.

“Damn it Third!” Asuka yelled “I’m not done with you where is my got damn dinner?” She demanded

Misato’s face dropped at this exchange she knew something had to be done. There was a small glimmer of hope when Shinji opened up to Asuka but that had all been buried under the fronts Asuka had put up. That and Shinji seemed to be getting more and more busy.

“Alright Asuka that’s enough” Misato interrupted the red heads rant

“What! How can you say that?” She shrieked

“Shinji is right Asuka, it is your night to cook so you should get cooking if you’re hungry” Misato replied

Asuka looked at her guardian with her mouth slightly open gathered her resolve “Fine” She grumbled

Misato knew this was not going to be the end of it but was glad for the reprieve.

Shinji came out later filling a glass of water in the sink.

“Everything ok Shinji?” Misato asked

“Yeah just been studying since I have to see Hikari tomorrow” Shinji replied as he refilled the glass

“You sure there is nothing else?” Misato asked

“No I’m fine” Shinji replied

“Alright well let me know if you need anything. I don’t care if its study, piloting, or this think you’re working on with Kaji alright?” Misato replied letting her ward know he didn’t have to do everything on his own and that she was always going to be there for him.

“Thanks Misato I will” Shinji said after finishing his drink and placing his glass in the sink.

“One more thing Shinji” Misato replied

“What is it?” Shinji asked

“When are we going to the range?” Misato replied

“Soon I’ll let you know tomorrow” Shinji replied

“Alright now take it easy don’t you go over doing it on the study before you see Hikari” Misato replied

“Yes ma’am” Shinji replied with a grin as he headed to his room.

Misato turned her attention back to the T.V and Pen-Pen
