Alcohol abuse is defined as a pattern of alcohol consumption that leads to one or more of the following situations within a 12-month time period:

Failure to satisfy significant employment, class, or domestic duties
Consuming in situations that are physically dangerous, like while operating an automobile or running equipment
Having recurring alcohol related legal troubles, like being apprehended for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or for physically hurting someone while drunk
Continued alcohol consumption in spite of having ongoing relationship issues that are triggered or worsened by the alcohol consumption.

Alcohol dependency, or alcohol dependence, is the most serious kind of alcohol abuse. It is a chronic disease defined by the consumption of alcohol at a level that disrupts physical and mental health and with family members and social responsibilities. An alcoholic will likely continue to drink regardless of significant health, household, or legal issues.

Alcohol dependency is influenced by both ecological and genetic factors. Alcohol addiction is chronic: It lasts a human being's lifespan. It typically follows a predictable course and has identifiable symptoms.

More guys than females are alcohol dependent or have alcohol problems. Individuals who begin drinking at an early age have a higher possibility of developing alcohol problems at some time in their lives.

Alcohol's effects differ with age. Slower reaction times, troubles with hearing and seeing, and a lower tolerance to alcohol's effects put older people at higher threat for falls, car crashes, and other kinds of injuries that might arise from drinking. More than 150 medicines interact harmfully with alcohol.

In addition, chronic alcohol abuse takes a heavier physical toll on women than on males. Alcohol dependence and associated medical troubles, such as liver, heart, and brain damage, progress more quickly in females.
