Chapter 12: Luna
The instant Luna arrived in her younger self’s body, her mother grabbed her by the shoulders and spun around. Now she was using her body to shield Luna with her back to the experimental spell effect. Luna and her mother were facing each other. Luna had an instant to see the fear in her mother’s eyes before she was able to see her skeleton as the light shown through her. Luna was then knocked back as her mother’s body was disintegrated.
“Mummy? MUMMY!” cried Luna, when she realized what had happened. Like last time, she curled up into a ball and cried out her grief. In her previous life, she had lain like that until her father found her that night when he came home from work. This time, she was more prepared and only cried out her grief for an hour. When she uncurled and looked down at herself, she noticed the blood on her thighs. The strange magic had caused her first period to come a few years early. She left her mother’s lab and cleaned herself up before flooing to the Quibbler to tell her father the sad news.
As expected, her father was as heartbroken as she at the death of his wife. Over the next two years, he poured himself into his magazine, The Quibler, and tended to neglect Luna other than when he took her on camping trips to look for strang animals or when she helped him write articles for the Quibler. But that suited Luna just fine. She fully. Intended to return to her Clan and spent a lot of energy on planning and making lists of the supplies she planned to take back in time with her. Her friend, Ginny, grew apart from her as she was still a child and wanted to play, not plan for the future.
When it came time for Hogwarts, Luna found a comparment that only had one boy in it. He was fiddling with a camera
“Hello, I’m Colin, Colin Crevey,” said the boy as a flash blinded her from his camera.
Luna sat down in the carriage as she waited for her vision to clear and introduced herself: “Hello Colin Colin Creavy. I’m Luna Lovegood. Can you help me with my trunk?”
“Sure!” Replied Colin, before setting down his camera and lifing her trunk onto the shelf above the seats.
“I see you like to take pictures,” observed Luna.
“Yes,” confirmed Colin. “Someday I hope to become a professional photographer.”
“Did you know there is a potion you can mix with the developer that will make the pictures move?” asked Luna. “If you could get pictures of something unusual, perhaps you could get it published in the Quibbler?”
“What’s the Quibbler?” asked Colin.
“It’s a magazine that my father publishes,” replied Luna, as she pulled a copy out of her purse and handed it to him. She had brought an expanded bag full of them to hand out on the train in the hopes that it might gain more subscriptions for her father. “Here, you can have a copy of it.”
The train lurched as it started to pull out of the station. Just then, Ginny Weasley burst into the cabin.
“Hi, Luna. Do you mind if I join you?” asked Ginny.
“Come on in Ginny,” replied Luna. She watched her friend pull her diary, some ink and a quill out of her trunk before Colin helped her lift it onto the rack. Ever since she had gone shopping, Ginny had been writing in that diary and now was no exception. She immediately started writing in the diary. “You have a lot of wrackspurts hovering around you,” observed Luna. “You shouldn’t spend so much time writing in your diary. It’s sucking the life out of you.”
Ginny just shrugged and kept writing. So Colin took a picture of her writing in it.
“I think I will go hand out Quiblers,” said Luna as she stood up and left the carriage. They were not well received. She was disapointed that she didn’t get to meet Harry Potter, until she remembered that her first year in her previous life, he and Ronald Weasley had shown up late to the Feast.
When it came time for her sorting, the hat was placed on her head.
“A time traveler eh?” said the Hat. “I don’t get to sort those very often. My, what an ambitious plan, a plan worthy of Slytherin. Of course, being willing to live your life over again takes bravery. You might do well in Gryfindor.”
“Ravenclaw, please,” asked Luna.
“Are you sure?” asked the hat. “In another house you might not be bullied so much.”
“I can deal with the bullies. Ravenclaw,” demanded Luna.
“Very well,” said the hat. “Then it had better be RAVENCLAW!”
When she went to sit at the Ravenclaw table a couple of the third year pure-bloods frowned at her and quickly filled in their classmates on what a weirdo she was. Luna just let it slide off her back.
The next morning, when she stepped out of the shower, her bathrobe and night gown were gone. So, she had to walk down the hall of the girl’s wing naked. She made no effort to cover herself. Her past life had made her comfortable being nude in front of others. But when she got back to her room and went to get dressed, she found that one of her shoes was missing. Pulling her wand out from behind her ear, she cast:
“Point me, my other shoe!”
She then used her wand as a compass to find herself at the door of a third year girl’s room, Marietta Edgecomb. Letting herself in, Luna summoned her shoe back to her.
“Accio my shoe!” said Luna, as it came sliding out from under Marietta’s bed and flew into her hand.
“Your shoes must not work right on your feet if you need to steal other peoples shoes,” observed Luna. “Here, let me help you.”
Luna then silently tranfigured Marietta’s feet into cloven-hoofed cow’s feet. Seeing what had happened, the girl screamed in terror! Luna then stepped back into the hall and began the search for her missing clothes.
“Point me, my nightgown!”
This led her to Cho Chang’s room where she summoned back her bathrobe and nightgown.
“So you like seeing me naked?” asked Luna. “Let me make it easier for you.”
This time, Luna silently cast a charm that make Cho unable to see clothing. Now everyone, including herself would look naked to her. Luna had punished the girls with silent spells in order to make it more difficult for anyone to reverse them.
After that, the Ravenclaw girls didn’t bully Luna anymore. Cho had taken to wearing mismatched clothes, unless she was helped to dress and she spent a lot of time looking at boys while she blushed.
The year went pretty much how she remembered it except she was at the top of her class in practicals. Her essays tended to bewilder her professors. She did go out of her way to meet Harry Potter and give him a copy of the Quibler. He was polite to her, but this was not time to become friends yet.
The next year, she made sure to get the cabin next to Harry Potter’s. When the Demetor stopped the train and started checking all the cabins, Luna cast her Patronis Charm.
“Expecto Patronum!” Luna cast as her hare patronis appeared and chased the Dementor out of Harry’s cabin, followed quickly by a wolf patronis.
“Well done!” Praised Professor Lupin. “I wouldn’t expect someone so young to know the patronis charm. Uh . . .”
“Luna Lovegood, Ravenclaw,” she introduced herself.
“Well, if school were in session I would be awarding you 30 points for that well cast patronis charm,” praised Lupin, before handing out chocolate to everyone. “Here, take this, it will help with the after effects of the dementor. I need to go speak with conductor.”
Once the professor had left Harry asked: “What was that rabbit thing? I almost passsed out from the dementor before you did that.”
“Like Professor Lupin said, it was a Patronis Charm,” explained Luna. “And mine is a hare, not a rabbit. Would you like me to teach it to you?”
“Can you please?” asked Harry.
“Oh! Me too!” exclaimed Hermione. “I want to learn it too!”
“That’s fine,” agreed Luna, before turning to the fourth person in the carriage. “How about you, Ronald? Do you want to learn?”
“No, I’m good,” replied Ron Weasley. He never liked taking on more learning if he could possibly avoid it.
“Very well, we’ll have to start meeting regularly after we get to school,” mused Luna.
“Why can’t you just teach it now?” asked Hermione.
“It takes a long time to learn,” explained Luna. If you want to start now, the first thing you need to find a happy thought, something that makes you extremely happy.
Later, when they started the patronis study sessions, both Harry and Hermione were having trouble finding a happy enough thought to cast the spell.
“Expecto Patronum!” shouted Harry, as a cloud of white mist came out of his wand.
“Very good!” praised Luna. “What were you thinking about this time?”
“I was thinking about catching the snitch in the last quiditch match against Slytherin,” replied Harry.
“And you?” asked Luna, of Hermione.
“I was thinking about a test I got a perfect score on,” replied Hermione.
“Those are happy memories for you two, but not quite good enough. Hmmmm . . .” mused Luna.
Then she had an idea! Seizing Hermione, she pulled her into kiss. Hermione froze at first, but when Luna tried to enter her mouth with her tongue, Hermione began responding by allowing her entrance and pulling her closer. When she began to give off a faint moan, Luna broke it off and put their foreheads together.
“Are you ready to try again?” asked Luna.
Hermione nodded and stepped away.
“Expecto Patronum!” shouted Hermione as a vaguely animal shaped light appeared.
“Close. . . . but not quite . . . I Know! Let Harry kiss you!” commanded Luna.
“What! But Luna, Hermione and I are just friends!” protested Harry.
“I don’t mind if it will help my casting,“ offered Hermione.
“ . . . . All right . . .I’ll give it a try,” conceaded Harry, as he stepped over to her and pressed his lips against hers.
But Hermione pulled him closer and snogged him in the same way Luna had snogged her. Now she giving off a muffled moan as she ground against him.
“Are you ready to give it a try?” asked Luna.
They both jumped apart, blushing as Hermione nodded and cast.
“Expecto Patronum!”
A fully formed otter of light flowed out of her wand and gamboled around the room.
“Huh . . . I would expected an owl,” observed Harry.
“Now your turn,” commanded Luna.
“Expecto Patronum!”
A fully coporeal stag erupted from his wand and pranced around the room.
“You did it! You did it!” Squeeled Hermione, as she pulled him into a hug and bounced up and down. (Rubbing her chest agains his)
Luna had thought this might have been the beginning of a relationship for these two. But it was not to be. For in the next quidich game, the Ravenclaw seeker, Cho Chang caught his eye. And although he didn’t approach her, it was clear that Cho was the subject of his fantasies.
