Chapter 17: Deathly Hallows part 1: the Ministry falls.
Luna didn’t get to see Harry at all during the first half of Summer. It had become too dangerous for them to meet in Knock Turn Alley, or even Diagon Alley. Harry was being kept in seclusion in his home. The wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Del Le Cour would be their first chance to see each other. Luna and her father both wore bright yellow robes and dresses for the wedding, her father had made sure to wear his Deathly Hallows pendant. Luna had not yet told him that she knew where two of them were.
“Hello Harry Potter,” said Luna, as he greeted her with a kiss. “Have you met my father?”
“Xenophilous Lovegood, Pleased to meet you. I want you to know that the Quibbler stands behind you.”
“Come along father, there are more people for you to meet,” scolded Luna.
As she led him away, the turned back and winked at Harry.
The wedding was quite nice and she even got a chance to dance with Harry, before a lynx patronis appeared and announced:
“The Ministry has fallen! The Minister of Magic is dead. They are coming . . . they are coming . . .”
Just then, Death-eaters arrived and began attacking the wedding guests. People fought back. But when it was clear they weren’t going to win, Luna grabbed Harry’s hand for comfort just as he, Hermione and Ron disaparated.
When they reappeared on a busy street in the muggle part of London, they jumped away from being run over by a double decker bus, just in the nick of time.
“Where are we?” asked Luna.
“Shaftsburry Avenue,” replied Hermione. “My mother used to take me here.”
“Luna, what are you doing here?” asked Ron.
“I’m going with you,” replied Luna.
“You can’t! It’s too dangerous!” replied Harry. “We need to get you home.”
“If I go back home, Daddy will make me go to school in September and if I go to school, the Death Eaters will take me out of school and back to Malfoy Manor, where they will gang-Force me . . . repeatedly,” explained Luna. “Whatever adventure you are planning, whatever you will be facing, it can’t be as bad as that. I would rather take my chances and fight by your side than face that.
“How do you know all that?“ asked Ron.
“As I have told you, more than once, I have already lived this life,” replied Luna. “That is what happened to me in my previous life. And I have no desire to relive it!”
“All right . . . you can stay with us,” said Hermione. “Isn’t that right, Harry.”
“Hmmm? Yeah. Yes Luna you can stay,” agreed Harry, as he squeezed her hand.
“Over here,” ordered Hermione, as she led them into a doorway in an alley. She reached into her beaded bag, which had an undetectable expansion charm on it and pulled out clothes. “I didn’t bring any of yours, Luna. I didn’t know you were coming. You can wear some of mine.”
“Thank you,” answered Luna. “You’re very kind.”
The three of them surprised Luna by stripping out of their outer clothes in front of each other. Luna had no modesty about her body. But she had thought they would be too shy to do this. Granted, Harry and Ron did turn they back on the girls to change. Hermione had a bra and pants on under her dress. But when Luna pulled off her dress, Hermione realized that the only thing she was wearing under her dress was a garter belt and hose.
“Luna! You can’t be naked in public!” scolded Hermione.
Hearing that, the boys turned around to glance at her. Harry quickly turned back around. But Ron’s gaze lingered. Hermione had to swat Ron to get him to turn back around and give them privacy.
“Why not?” asked Luna.
“Because people might see you,” admonished Hermione.
“I don’t mind if you see me,” replied Luna.
“I meant Ron and Harry,” growled Hermione. “Here, you can use some of my knickers and bra.”
“I don’t usually wear those,” complained Luna, as she pulled the pants onto her.
Hermione had to help her with the bra and jeans. But she had no trouble with the shirt and jumper.
Once they were all dressed, Hermione led them into a cafe’. None of the others knew what to order, so they all ordered cappuccinos, like Hermione. Luna thought her’s was quite good. But Ron thought it tasted terrible.
They were not there long before a group of Death-Eaters attacked them. With Luna’s help they were able to defeat the Death-Eaters. While they were trying to decide what to do with the Death Eaters, and owl arrived for Luna.
“What’s it say?” asked Ron.
“It’s a warning about casting under-age magic from the ministry,” replied Luna.
“That’s it! Hermione, obliviate the death-eaters and then we’ll apparate to Grimmauld Square,” commanded Harry.
“Obliviate!” Hermione did as she was told an they fled in a group apparate away to Grimmauld Square.
The other three started toward the line between two houses.
“Where are we going?” asked Luna.
“That’s right, it’s under the fidelis and she doesn’t know the secret,” observed Hermione.
“And because of the fidelis, we can’t tell her where number 12 is,” mused Harry.
Suddenly, the buildings started moving apart, as a new one appeared.
“Splendid!” said Luna, as she realized she had just learned the secret.
When they entered the house a ghostly figure that resembled Dumbledore lurched at them. This set off the painting, which began screaming at them until Harry reclosed her curtains.
“I’m really knackered,” announced Harry.
“Right. Harry and I will take our room and Hermione will stay in the room she shared with Ginny last summer,” said Ron.
“Can’t Harry and I share a room?” asked Luna.
“Luna! You can’t sleep with a boy! People will think you are a scarlet woman!” Whined Ron.
“I AM a scarlet woman,” replied Luna. “And I want to spend the night with my unofficial mate.”
“What do you mean: ‘unofficial mate?’” asked Hermione.
“Well, we haven’t had a mating ceremony yet,” explained Luna. “But we act like we are mated.”
In the end, Harry and Luna ended up sleeping in Sirus’ bed.
