Chapter 42: Luna takes a Leap
Hermione rushed over to Luna and grabbed her by the shoulders.
“Luna? Luna! Listen to me! I promise we will get him back. I will do everything I can to help you get Harry back,” promised Hermione.
“That’s not it at all,” sobbed Luna. “I EXPECTED to lose Harry right now. But I expected to lose him because I would be the one to go away. That hole was a gateway to the distant past where Creb and Ayla live. That was Ayla’s arm. And now she’s gone forever!”
“Then we’ll do both,” offered Hermione. “We’ll get my Harry back and get you to your people in the past.”
“But how?” asked Luna. “The event that caused me to go back the first time can’t be duplicated! It was too unlikely!”
“Then tell me all about it . . . in every detail,” replied Hermione. “And perhaps I will find a way to get you there.”
When their NEWT scores arrived, both of them got O’s in every subject they had taken them in, even the ones that were for classes Luna had taken in her previous life. This was no surprise to either of them.
It was decided that even though she had already taken her NEWTs early, Luna would go back to Hogwarts for one more year. This would allow her to access the Hogwarts library and research possible ways to time travel.
Hermione, on the other hand, decided to pursue a muggle education. But for that, she’d needed to catch up on what she’d missed by going to Hogwarts.
After Hogwarts, Luna worked full time for the Quibbler. She started a series of articles on lost or suppressed knowledge. This gave her an excuse to look though magical libraries all over the world.
Hermione, received a degree in Physics, a Masters in Quantum Mechanics and a Doctorate in M-Theory Physics. While working on her doctorate, she met Collin Wood, one of the world’s leading M-Theory Physicists. After he impregnated her, they decided to get married. She would have liked to have married Luna, but it was not yet legal for women to marry and wouldn’t be for another year. Once she was married, it became legal for Hermione to reveal the magical world and her relationship with Luna. He took it well and provided some insights that led to some major break throughs in their work.
Hermione was working in a high energy experimental station and had just come back from lunch when her secretary told her that Luna had been there. On her desk, she found some arthimancy equations.
When Hermione realized what Luna was planning, she rushed to stop her . . . . but she was too late . . .
“Theorizing that one could time travel within her own lifetime, Luna Lovegood stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. . . . She awoke to find herself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not her own, and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. Her only guide on this journey is Hermione, an observer from her own time, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Luna can see and hear. And so, Luna finds herself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping that each time that her next leap . . . will be the leap home . . .”
When Luna appeared, she was on her knees and elbows, being violated! She looked around and realized that she was in a cave, at a hearth. There was a Clan man sitting nearby watching and the man inside her must be a Clan man who was using her to Relieve his Needs.
“O bo!” Luna tried to say “Oh Boy!” But found she couldn’t quite pronounce it. (Looks like I’m a woman of the Clan) thought Luna.
She assumed the man using her must be her mate, so she tried to make it better for him by manipulating her pelvic muscles. This made him finish quicker and he pulled out of her. Now that she could get up she’d be able to get a better look at him. Looking down, she realized she was wearing a Clan-style wrap. And the man who had just used her looked familiar . . .
“Broud?” asked Luna.
She didn’t see his fist coming, until it slammed into her head.
“Broud is not your Leader any more!” signed the man. “This man is! Zab! Zab! Zab is your Leader!”
Luna could tell this man couldn’t be reasoned with. So she just bowed her head submissively.
After the man stomped off she was left alone with the other man, whom she didn’t know, and two Clan children, a boy and a baby girl. Then, she heard the sound of a door opening. Looking in that direction, she spotted Hermione entering her sight. Grabbing a water-skin, Luna signed:
“This woman is going to get some water.”
Exiting the cave, she spotted a stream, so she walked down to it.
“It was hard to find you,” said Hermione. “Not only have you gone into the distant past, you’ve also traveled to an alternate timeline.
“So who am this woman,” signed Luna.
“What’s with the signs?” asked Hermione.
“This woman is Clan now, and can’t speak most words,” signed Luna.
“All right, let’s see who you are,” said Hermione, as she manipulated her tablet. “Deep Thought says your name is: Uba. You are a woman of the Clan, daughter of Iza and Targ. You were supposed to poison your mate, Vun, so that you can be mated to your half brother Zab, who is the son of Aba and Targ. Zab will then use you to get you made 1st Ranked Medicine Woman at the next Clan Gathering, which is not for several years yet.”
“Well, Need Relieve that!,” signed Luna. “This woman is not going to murder someone just because your big computer said so!”
“This may be a case where you can’t change fate, just like when you were Osama Ben Laden,” said Hermione.
“This woman doesn’t care!,” signed Luna. “This woman would rather run away first.”
“Maybe this Vun deserved to die,” suggested Hermione. “Did he give you those bruises on your face?”
“Beating a woman is bad,” signed Luna. “But is it bad enough to kill someone for/“
“I don’t know. This is all uncharted territory,” replied Hermione. “You’ve never leaped into someone before your birth in 1981. Perhaps this is because you spent part of your life in this era?”
“This woman spent most of her life in this time,” signed Luna. “Does that mean there is another me Leading the Clanluna people?”
“Let’s see,” said Hermione, as she accessed her tablet. “No, you don’t appear to be here. Also, if you don’t kill Vun and marry Zab, you might be stuck here forever. Or you could be stuck leaping around in your lifetime here.”
“Then it is settled,” signed Luna. “This woman is staying in this time, but not here.”
“But you’ll never make it home!” protested Hermione.
“This woman am home!” signed Luna. “This woman will take Uba’s children and go back to her cave from her first life. Only . . . . this woman doesn’t know where it is from here. . . .”
“I’ll get Deep Thought working on it and get back to you,” replied Hermione, before opening the door and exiting the hologram room.
Luna filled the water-skin and went back to the cave. She spend the rest of the day attempting to impersonate Uba. Late at night, when everyone was asleep, Luna picked up Uba’s two sleeping children, and snuck out of the cave. She didn’t know where to go, so she followed the north star, which was not Polaris. But she was familiar enough with the skies of this era to find the north star. She walked for the rest of the night. As the sun began to rise, Uba’s son, Vub, awakened and wanted to walk for his self.
“Mother, where we going?” signed Vub.
“Away from the bad people, towards the good people,” signed Luna.
She found that attempting to travel with a young child was very slow.
When Luna saw the door open and Hermione step out, she stopped to rest for for a moment.
“Luna! Deep thought says you need to go North North West to get to a cave that was inhabited by neanderthals,” said Hermione, I hope that helps.” reported Hermione.
“This woman was already going north,” signed Luna. “This woman can adjust her course a little.”
“Mother, who you talk to?” signed Vub.
“One of this woman’s mates,” signed Uba.
Hermione left and Luna kept going. It was several days travel before she saw a familiar sight. By now, all the food she had brought with her was long since eaten. But that didn’t matter to Luna, she’d found the first cave she had lived in. A look around revealed that it was long abandoned. Hermione arrived then.
“You see, there is no one here,” admonished Hermione.
“It doesn’t matter,” signed Luna. “This woman knows where she is now. She knows how to get to the next cave. Do you think this woman still has her magic?”
“You’ve have to try it to find out an Olivander won’t be in business for thousands of years,” replied Hermione. “You don’t have a wand.”
“This woman could try apparating,” signed Luna.
She set down Uba’s daughter, Viza and stepped away from Vub. She concentrated . . . .
Pop!
Luna apparated 30 paces away.
Pop!
She apparated back.
“Yes!” exclaimed Luna.
“This woman is going to apparate to her cave,” signed Luna.
“I will check in on you from time to time,” said Hermione, sadly.
“Don’t be sad for this woman,” signed Luna. “This is what this woman wants. You never would have been happy in this time and you have a husband and children there. If this woman finds Harry, this woman will try to send him back.”
“Goodbye Luna,” sobbed Hermione. “I wish I could hug you!”
“Walk with Ursus, Hermi,” signed Luna.
With that, she picked up Uba’s children and apparated to her cave. (She hopes)
