Chapter 26: Iza is dying!

Harry realized that he should not be surprised by this. But he had been on autopilot, in shock from the loss of Luna, when he had helped some of the men of the Clan shrink down their supplies. Now that he had come to his senses, he realized he had seen the men of the Clan do magic before.

“Location you to have wand?” signed Harry.

“Oh this? The Mog-Ur made this for this man,” signed Zeen, in the silent ancient language. “It is made from hawthorn with a hair from the 1st ranked Medicine Woman.”

Harry wanted to ask how long his people had used wands but he didn’t have the right words to communicate this in signs.

When they retired to their tent, Uba helped Ayla take care of the cooking and cleaning for themselves, Creb and Zoug. Uba had wanted to build their fire in the oven. But Ayla had persuaded her that the firebox was a better place for it, even though it was smaller. Ayla was fascinated by the oven and the stovetop. They both made cooking so much easier. Why had Luna not made her one of these in her past life? The potions lab was mysterious to her. Creb tried to explain the purpose of the room, but Ayla couldn’t wrap her mind around the idea of making potions without an iron cauldron that Luna had provided and a fire to hang it over. She supposed that the cauldron could be put on the wood-stove. But why have a separate area for brewing potions?

The next day, the Clan resumed their journey to their cave. Harry occasionally went flying. But mostly, walked with them. Two days later, they arrived at the Cave. Dorv came out to greet them. The elderly man of the Clan failed to hide his surprise to see a man of the Other’s with them. But once he got over the shock, He looked at first Creb, then Ayla with a sad look.

“Creb, Aba walks with Ursus now,” signed Dorv, before turning to look at Ayla. “Iza will soon join her.”

“No! . . . No!” cried Ayla, as she ran into the cave.

“What’s going on?” asked Harry, in English before switching to the silent ancient Clan signs. “Question why to be sad?”

“The mate of the Mog-Ur has died,” signed Zeen in the ancient signs. “And the Medicine Woman is dying. She is the mother of the younger Medicine Woman and the female sibling of the Mog-Ur.”

Harry made a fast walk into the cave, where he found Ayla tending to an elderly woman who was weakly coughing up blood.

Harry pulled Luna’s trunk out of his pocket and enlarged it. He and Luna had bought her a lot of potion ingredients as well as a large stock of pre-made potions. He couldn’t remember if this one was amongst them, so he stuck his hand in the trunk and thought of the one he wanted, hoping it was there. When he felt a potion vial in his hand, he pulled it out and unstoppered it.

“Here, give her this,” said Harry, in English.

“What is it?” asked Ayla.

“I think it will help,” replied Harry.

Ayla wanted to question him further, but Iza was literally dying in her arms! She helped Iza to drink the potion.

Suddenly, Iza was wracked by violent coughs and started coughing up thick green phlegm in copious amounts.

“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! YOU’VE KILLED MY MOTHER!” screamed Ayla. “GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!”

Harry fled the cave as Ayla rolled Iza on her side desperate to prevent her from drowning in her own fluids. Ayla feared her mother was coughing her lungs out!

Finally the coughing stopped and Ayla feared she was dead. She turned Iza back onto her back. To Ayla’s great relief, Iza was still alive and signed at her:

“Feel much better . . . weak . . . but this woman can breath much easier now. What was that foul tasting medicine you gave me?”

“The woman . . . . This woman does not know,” signed Ayla.

“That man of the Others gave it to you?” signed Iza. “This woman is glad you have found your mate.”

“The woman is not going to mate him!” signed back Ayla. “This woman would rather become some man’s second mate than mate that hyena! This woman would rather be unwanted and passed around from hearth to hearth than mate that man!”

“We shall see,” signed Iza before patting her hand.

Ayla realized that Iza had lost too much blood. She’d need a Blood Strengthening Potion. But Ayla didn’t have all the ingredients to make one. She rushed out of the cave. No one else had entered, in part, because they didn’t want to be there when Iza died. Ayla’s screaming had been interpreted as a variation of the keening the women of the Clan do when a loved one has died. So intent was she on going out to find herbs that she didn’t look where she was going until she ran into Harry.

“Oh, it’s you,” signed Ayla in the ancient signs, before switching to English. “That potion you gave me . . . it worked . . . it saved Iza’s life!”

“Ayla?” commanded Brun, before motioning her to report to him.

Ayla rushed over and sat at his feet. He tapped her on the shoulder and she made her report:

“This Medicine Woman is pleased to report that Iza is much improved and it is possible for this Medicine Woman to heal her.”

“Do what needs doing to save the elder Medicine Woman,” signed Brun.

“This Medicine Woman needs to gather medicine to strengthen her blood,” signed Ayla.

Brun nodded his permission and Ayla ran back to Harry.

“Do you have a Blood Strengthening Potion in your box too,” asked Ayla, in English.

“Let’s see,” said Harry, as he walked back into the cave, reached into the trunk and willed the potion to come to him. “Will a Blood Replenishing Potion do?”

Ayla took it from him and unstoppered it. Sniffing it, she couldn’t identify it. But she decided to take a chance and gave it to Iza. Instantly the woman’s colour started to come back and she started to look healthy. Ayla thought all Iza needed now was some sleep. But she stayed to examine her more fully, just in case.

It gave Creb much sadness for him to perform his mate’s funeral ritual over her grave. Dorv had already buried her. But he didn’t know how to do the proper mog-ur rituals to send her to the spirit world. So now Creb had to perform this duty.

The Clan settled into their Cave. Harry had moved into Zeen’s Hearth. Iza was mostly recovered. The first hunt since their return had been successful. So Creb hobbled over to Zeen’s hearth to speak with Harry.

“Your name is wrong for a man of the Clan,” signed Creb in the ancient signs. “To the Clan, it sounds like a female name. You should shorten it to Harr.”

Harry nodded his agreement. “This woman no to be no like.”

“You should teach him our everyday language,” signed Creb to Zeen.

“This man will have his mate, Vara do it,” signed Zeen.

“He needs to learn to call him self ‘this man’ not ‘this woman’” signed Zeen.

“This man will make certain he learns the difference,” signed Zeen.

Later, the men all gathered to discuss the situation with their man of the Others.

“We need to decide whether or not to allow this spirit man of the others to join our Clan,” signed Brun.

“He’s of the Others,” signed Grod. “He should be sent away!”

“He appeared to us during the mog-urs’ ceremony,” signed Creb. “Ursus wants him to be with the Clan.”

Seeing these signs, the men could tell that although The Mog-Ur felt duty bound to do the wishes of Ursus, Creb didn’t care for this man of the Others. And it was not lost to Zab that both Creb and Ayla held this man of the Others in contempt. A cunning plan began to form.

“If this man of the Others is to remain amongst us, we should not inflict him on another man’s hearth,” signed Zab.

“This man does not mind letting the man of the Others stay at his hearth,” signed Zeen.

“He needs his own hearth,” signed Zab.

“If he has a hearth, he will need a mate and will need to hunt to feed his mate,” signed Droog.

“He’s a weez-ur,” signed Zeen. “If he uses his magic, he should be able to keep a hearth fed.”

“This Leader will not allow him to be a man of the Clan unless he can hunt the traditional Clan way,” signed Brun.
