Chapter 61: Autumn
Durciza was happy to have Ura join her hearth. The two became inseparable sisters, with Durciza teaching her how to use a sling. Ura couldn’t learn sling magic, but should could learn the ordinary use of the weapon. Durciza was also teaching Iza how to read and care for the garden of magical plants.
Ura placed the stone in the sling and started winding up, while Durciza nodded encouragingly. When she had it going for speed, she released. The sone flew and knocked the squirrel out the tree.
“You did it!” Durciza signed as she smiled with joy.
Ura smiled back at her and waved: “This girl did it! This girl finally hit a squirrel!”
“This girl is happy for you!” Durciza signed.
“Does this mean this girl is a woman-who-huts now?” Ura signed.
“No. Broud won’t let us become women-who-hunt until we become women,” signed Durciza. “Sometimes this girl wonders if she will ever become a woman. . .”
“Mama told this girl that we age slower because we are part Others,” signed Ura.
Durciza nodded. She had been told the same.
“Durciza, why do we call Ayla, mama?” Ura signed. “What does it mean?”
“It is Sungaean for mother,” signed Durciza. “Mama thinks that her original Other’s people were the Sungaea, just like Iga’s.”
“This girl is glad to have a new mother,” signed Ura. “Though she still misses her Clan mother.
Now that the Clan Gathering was over, the clanlunae had to start redfooting again. There were 7 boys who were soon to be men that they had been training before the Clan Gathering. They had stopped during the Clan Gathering and now need to resume their training. The boys themselves had had opportunities to use their training at the Clan Gathering and some had developed bad habits that they needed to unlearn.
While, the clanlunae were training these 7 boys that were soon to be men, they also needed to take care of the Needs of the 20 mateless men. This kept Iga, Ayla and Uba too busy to go on hunts with the men and made it difficult to join the women for gathering of the plant part of their diet.
Broud led the men on a few more hunts were magic was allowed in order to make sure that their stores for winter were full. But their store of plants were lower and the women need time for that, instead of drying meat.
Ayla prepared for another day of redfooting by putting on her smallest wrap and dying her soles red. She then tucked her sling, wand, digging stick and a pouch of stones into the top of her wrap, at the waist. Now that she was prepared, she started her most alluring walk as she searched for Vorg. He had progressed far enough that she was now sharing herself fully with him. While doing so, she had to leave her youngest children in the care of the other women of the Clan. Ayla sauntered around the cave going first to Var’s hearth where ehe boy lived. After that she searched the other hearths, then outside the cave. He wasn’t practicing running and spear thrusting with the other boys. In fact none of the boys were. She spotted Iga The Clanluna, also dressed for redfooting walking towards the cave.
“Have you seen Vorg anywhere?” Ayla signed.
“No this Clanluna has not,” signed Iga. “This Clanluna was about to ask you if you knew where Zoud was.”
“This clanluna has not seen him,” signed Ayla. “Come to think of it, this clanluna has not seen any of the young men or the boys who are soon to become men.”
“Broud said that a large group of men went on a hunt and took the boys who are soon to be men with them,” signed Uba as she approached them from a different direction. She too was dressed as a redfoot. “It’s not like Vrov to turn down a chance to Share Pleasures, even to watch a hunt.”
“This woman didn’t notice any of the women missing,” signed Ayla. “Usually that take some of us to do the butchering after a hunt.”
“Perhaps they will send a runner when they catch something?” suggested Iga.
“We should stay close to the cave unless they need us,” signed Uba.
“And put on more wraps, it’s getting chilly,” signed Ayla.
But the day passed and the sun set and the young men and boys had not returned.
The next day, Broud approached Harr’s hearth.
“The men will now hold a meeting. Come,” signed Broud.
Harr followed the Leader to his hearth. This was not a private meeting that the women could not peek in at. It was an informal gathering of the men of the Clan.
“Yesterday, Groob asked to take some of the men on a hunt,” signed Broud. “This Leader did give permission, but the boys who are almost men went with them to watch the hunt. This morning, this leader checked and they have taken some of the dried meat.”
“They have also taken this man’s fire carrying horn,” signed Crug.
“But they don’t need it,” waved Creb. “All of them are weez-urs and can make fire with their wands.”
‘How much of the winter stores to they take?” Harr signed.
‘Only enough to last them a couple of weeks,” signed Broud. “And they only took dried meat, and water-skins, things that they can eat without a woman to cook for them. Have any of them spoken to any of you about where they were going to hunt?”
The men all shook their head.
For now, Broud let the men continue of their hunt. But then night came again and they still had not returned.
Once he realized that they were still gone, Harr approached Uba.
“You are the best of us at far learning (divination),” signed Harr. “Can you do a reading? See if they are in danger?”
Uba pulled out Luna’s tarot cards that Harr had brought back into the past and did a reading: The 5 of cups, crossed by 7 of Cups. the Hermit, the 7 of cups, 3 of wands, 2 of wands, 4 of Cups, 9 of swords.
“They appear to be well and are approaching their prey,” signed Luna. They will be returning after they catch it.
“So they should be back in two more days?” Harr signed.
‘It would seem so,” signed Uba.
Two more nights passed and they had not returned.
The weather was turning colder, this might be the last sunny day for a while. So Uba invited Ayla and Harr to go hunting with her. True to form, Uba had brought some polyjuice potion so Luna could Share Pleasures with both Ayla and Harr. But when the potion wore off, a cloud blocked out the sun and the wind started to pick up.
“We had better get back,” signed Uba. As she started to frantically get dressed.
‘What’s going on?” Harr signed.
“A storm is coming,” signed Uba.
They raced back to the cave and arrived as the snow started to fall. It was a thick squall and was starting to block vision in the distance already. Harr helped the men wrestle the cover over the mouth of the cave into place. While he was doing that, he noticed shapes coming at them out of the snow haze.. . . They were people . . . It was the young men and boys . . . but there were more people than that. . . with them, were women of the Others!
It was late in the autumn that a large group of the younger men and the boys soon to be men went on a hunt without Broud or any of the women. By now, the clanlunae had finished redfooting the boys, so it was not unusual for them to go watch men hunt. And at first, Broud thought the young men were going nearby when they caught something. But after they failed to come home before nightfall, it was found that some of the dried meat was missing. Another night passed and the men still had not returned. After the third night, Uba preformed several divinations, all of which told her that the men were alive and not in any immediate danger. Hunting was inherently dangerous, so it was not thought by her that the danger she did sense was more than the ordinary danger a man of the Clan faced while hunting. More divination on the fourth day told her the men were returning. It was on the fifth day that the young men and older boys returned. With them were a large group of women of the Others!
