Shinya threw down the paintbrush with a frustrated yell of, "I give up." He plopped down on the stool and looked at the painting in front of him, if you could call it a painting that is. It was more like a big, white blob. Ever since that day at his favorite small, family restaurant, which he frequently visited by himself, Shinya couldn't stop thinking about that man. The man looked so cool as if he didn't have a care in the world. It was on a day that the sun was hiding behind the clouds and the rain was pouring hard. It was one of those lazy days, but the moment that man walked in Shinya could have sworn that the rain stopped and the sun came out from behind the clouds, in fact, the rain did stop and the sun did come out. It was as if that man held some sort of power to make everything happy, bright and cheerful.
Shinya had taken out a napkin, and a pen that he always kept in his back pocket. He tried to lightly sketch the unusual man, but it was a little hard to do with a pen and a napkin. By the time Shinya's food came he had to stop to eat, and the "sketch" looked more like lines on a ripped up napkin then a person. Shinya gave up with trying to sketch the young man, and slowly ate the food in front of him. Shinya would just have to remember the man's face. Oh how he wished he had his sketchpad with him, or his camera at the least. Then Shinya had an idea. He could ask the other man to model for him. Shinya had never asked a stranger to model for him but he really wanted this man. He just had to have him.
When Shinya was finished eating he looked up to find that the man was not there. The seat was instead filled with a family, a mother and father with their two daughters. Shinya motioned for the waitress, and asked for the cheek. He was hoping that the other man just left so that Shinya could still catch him. It felt like forever for the waitress to come back with the cheek.
After paying, and leaving a generous tip, Shinya rushed out the door. He walked along the sidewalk, and looked around the parking lot, but he couldn't find the man. Shinya gave up and begun walking back to his tiny apartment-studio.
That was how Shinya found himself here, at his table looking at a messy canvas unable to fill it with the burning image in his mind. Usually Shinya was good at conveying his image to canvas but today it wasn't working for the young man. To make matters worse Die was coming over today; not that Shinya didn't like Die, the two were very close friends, but Die could be a little too energetic, and today Die had told Shinya that he had a surprise for him. It was no surprise that Shinya was scared about what Die had in mind for him.
Shinya had a sort of sixth sense when it came to Die and his surprises, and today was no different.
Shinya mentally cursed himself for coming out with Die. He should have just turned off the lights, lock the door, and pretend that he wasn't home. But no, Shinya had to show his face, and now he was regretting it. Shinya stood next to Die in front of the barbershop.
"Surprise Shinya!" Die exclaimed.
"What?" Shinya asked. "You're going to get a hair cut. Good thing too, because your hair is very long," Shinya said taking a piece of Die's long red hair in between his fingers.
"No," Die laughed. "You are." He said taking his hair back and leading Shinya into the barbershop.
"Die I really don't-"
"Die!" Shinya was cut off by a woman's voice. "It's good to see you again." The woman said as she hugged Die.
"Hey Rika-san," Die greeted the woman. "Do you think you could help my friend here?"
"Die, I-"
"Of course!" Rika exclaimed. "What were you thinking about having done?"
"I don't really need-" Poor Shinya couldn't get a word in between the two.
"I was thinking about having it cut short and dying it orange," Die answered.
"Orange?" Shinya shouted.
"Relax Shinya," Die smiled. "Rika knows what she's doing."
"Orange it is!" Rika said as she took Shinya to the back of the room to wash his hair.
A few hours later Shinya's hair was shoulder length and dyed orange. Shinya looked into the mirror and held up a few strands of hair. He had to admit that the color wasn't so bad.
Die was standing behind him with Rika both smiling. "See Shinya," Die teased. "It's not so bad. You like it too." Rika giggled.
Shinya pouted. "Well Die, it looks like for all your crazy ideas this one finally turned out good. I guess it had to happen one day."
Die laughed. "Then you should come drinking with me to show off that new hair do."
Shinya sighed. "I don't know..."
"Why not?" Die asked.
"I kind of wanted to stay inside and work on my painting," Shinya answered.
"You've been working on that all day, and you still have not fixed it," Die said. "So come out with me. I'll find you some nice ass."
"Die!" Shinya exclaimed causing Die to burst out with laughter. "I don't need to go home with some random stranger."
"Yes you do," Die answered. "You need to get laid Shinya, and as your best friend it's my duty to help you get some."
"You're not even gay Die," Shinya said.
"So? I'll brave a gay bar for your sake Shinya," Die said. "Besides, how do you know that I'm not gay?"
"You've dated women before," Shinya answered.
"Okay, bi then?" Die swung an arm around Shinya's shoulder and lead the other man outside. "Let's get you home so that you can clean up and then we'll go out to a gay bar." Shinya just sighed. He really wished he had not gone out with Die today.
