A/N: So I'm finally posting this story. I originally wrote this for a oneshot contest and it won. Hope you like it.

"Everything will be alright," she said, "It'll all turn out for the best, you'll see." she said. But nothing would ever be alright, and nothing will ever be for the best. The only thing she had right was that I would see, she, however, would not.

*

It was dark, and it was cold. If I had nerves I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to feel my fingers. We were out of time, and out of luck. This was the end. Still, I clung to her with every hope that we could just vanish away from here, from this hell. This hell, which used to be called home.

It had been so long since I had found someone like her. Someone who understood me, who wasn't afraid of me, who really, truly cared for me. Anya, she was everything to me.

*

I stumbled upon her one afternoon as I was doing my nightly rounds of the park. She had been sleeping on a bench, with no where to go. Her neck was perfectly exposed. I knelt down beside her, ready to do my 'job' when she stirred in her sleep. Startling me, it caused me to fall backwards, and for her to wake. It was in that instant, when I looked up into her eyes, something within me changed.

"Oh my god, are you alright?" Came her soft voice.

She jumped up from the bench and held out a hand. Should I take it? I wondered. There had always been one main rule among the vampires, if someone saw you, you were to kill them, no questions asked. And if you touched them, they should already be dead.

I had been lying on the ground staring at her hand for a while, just thinking it over when her voice broke through the silence once more.

"I'm sorry, is there something wrong?" She seemed truly worried. No one ever worried about me.

I took her hand.

She helped me to my feet. We stood close, our breaths mingling together in the cold night air. She looked down at our still linked hands. A tingling sensation started creeping its way up my arm as I broke the contact. However, not soon enough, she had seen it.

"What was that?" She asked curiously as I tried to hide my wrist by pulling my sleeve down.

"It's nothing." I said stubbornly. She didn't need to know, she had no business knowing. But she was persistent.

"It didn't look like nothing, I think you must have hurt yourself when you fell." Before I could stop her she was reaching for my wrist again. This time it was a sharp pain. I hissed at the feeling, my fangs bared, pulling my hand back.

At first I thought for sure she would run away, but she didn't move. She barely even flinched. Instead, she seemed to be more intrigued than frightened. That's when I knew she was different.

That night, we stayed in the park. She told me her name was Anya, and how she was named after her great grandmother.

"I'm Gerard." I informed her. Anya was very interested in the whole vampire thing. What she seemed to be most interested in though was my brand. It was my brand that had caused the initial signs to her of my being a vampire.

Years ago, there was no telling exactly how long ago, when I was turned, I was also branded. A large "V" adorned the inside of my wrist. We were not to be in direct contact with a human unless we are making a kill. The pain it caused us was our punishment. Their way of letting us know we were doing something wrong.

When dawn approached, Anya showed me to an old abandoned house. I followed her down to the basement. No windows. Perfect for a hideout.

We had continued living in that old house for a couple of months. I didn't think it was possible for a human to ever love a vampire, but she did. Nor did I think I could love anyone at all, but I did, I had fallen in love with Anya.

During the small amount of time we had spent with each other, we grew closer and closer until that moment where we proved our love for one another. We made love on that old basement floor. To "make love," it was something I thought I'd never be able to do, but with her, anything seemed possible.

After meeting her, I had no intention on going back to my pack. I would stay with her forever. I just didn't think forever would end so quickly.

I knew it was only a matter of time before my old life would catch up with me. And when it caught up, it came full force.

Anya and I were sitting at the old wobbly table in the kitchen towards the back of the house when there was a loud crash of glass shattering.

"What was that?!" Anya screamed, jumping up from her place at the table.

"They're here." I said flatly.

"What? Who? Who's here? What's going on?" Her eyes were darting around the room wildly.

"My pack. They've come for me."

"What do you mean? They can't just take you away from me, we love each other don't we?" Her eyes slowly brimmed with salty tears.

"Yes of course." I grabbed her arm and led her back down to the basement. "But vampires don't love, its just an empty emotion, it doesn't matter to them."

"It matters to US!"

"IT WON'T DO ANY GOOD!" I didn't mean to yell, her tears were flowing freely now. I held her close and tried to comfort her, "Look, we can't lose our heads here, okay?" I tilted her chin up for her eyes to meet mine. I captured her lips, wanting to stay in that moment as long as possible. The moment of peace, however, was cut short by feet stomping around upstairs.

I pulled her by the arm once more to a dark corner of the dingy basement, hoping to get away from the angry voices from above.

This was the end. Still, I clung to her with every hope that we could just vanish away from here, from this hell. This hell, which used to be called home.

Crouching on the ground with Anya, I prayed they would just give up and leave. No such luck. The voices were getting nearer still.

"Everything will be alright," she whispered, to me or to herself, it wasn't entirely clear.

"We know you're here!" Boomed an angry voice from the top of the stairs, "We will find you. We know who you're with too! Better say your farewells now!"

"It'll all turn out for the best, you'll see." she spoke against my ear as she kissed my pale cheek. I wrapped my arms tighter around her.

They were coming down the stairs now.

She entwined her fingers with mine.

They were getting alarmingly close.

She kissed the back of my hand.

Closer.

She continued to kiss the brand on my wrist, it no longer hurt anymore, her lips left a burning kiss of love.

They were here. Gathered around us, at least half a dozen, maybe more.

"Take her outside." The firm voice of Vlad, the head of the pack, commanded.

It took just about everyone there to pry us apart. Our hands were the last to part. Two of them dragged her kicking and screaming up the stairs. I tried to go after her, but three of my own had me well restrained.

When I tried to bite one, I was immediately stung with a slap across the face.

"What were you thinking? Being with that thing?" A tall, menacing vamp asked disgustedly. My silence was followed by another slap, harsher than the first.

"Answer me!" Yelled Vlad.

"I love her." I said quietly.

"Don't you mean, loved?" Instantly following, there was an ear piercing scream that cracked through the silent night like a whip. It was Anya. My head dropped. She was no more.

"Now, now, there, there Gerard. Unlike her, you are immortal, you get to live forever, with no worries of ever dying. You'll thank us for this one day, you'll see. This is who you are." And with that they dropped me to the floor, leaving me to myself.

But what Vlad didn't realize was that I had already died. From the moment they tore Anya from my grasp, I was dead, hollow.

Now my brand burns constantly, never to be soothed. A reminder of the one I loved, no, the one I love, I will never stop loving her. Her, and my unborn child that not even Anya had been able to realize was there.
