Chapter Nineteen
Scarlet slowly awoke from her deep sleep the next morning. With her eyes still closed she tossed and turned before finally stretching her arms up above her head and yawning. Every morning Scarlet completed her bed stretching routine which consisted of her reaching above her head and lazily running her fingers along the wooden carvings that were located on her bed head. It was more of a habit then a routine. But as she began to complete her morning ritual, her hands came in contact with what appeared to be a cold hard wall and not her familiar bed head at all. She immediately opened her eyes and focused on the ceiling above her. If her hands didn’t come in contact with her bed head that could only mean one thing, she wasn’t in her own bed. Scarlet laid dead still for a moment still staring at the ceiling, she wasn’t quite prepared to face whoever or whatever lay next to her just yet. A million thoughts raced through her head. Where was she? What did she do last night? Did she get fucked up? Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a familiar male voice.
“Hey.”
Scarlet closed her eyes and sighed, mentally psyching herself up for what she was about to face. She slowly but surely propped herself up onto her elbow and scanned the room. It was really dark and cluttered with drawings, dirty clothes, empty cigarette packs and medication bottles. There was only a single ray of light that entered the room via a small window. And then she saw him, sitting in the corner of the room at a desk. He had an open sketch book in front of him.
“Hey.” Scarlet said quietly with a small smile.
He closed the sketch book and made his way over to the bed. He gently sat down beside her and began to speak.
“How are you feeling?” Gerard asked, concern filling his tired voice. His hazel eyes were dull and lifeless with big black circles under them from an obvious lack of sleep.
“My head kinda hurts.” Scarlet replied after waiting a moment to assess her own well being. She hadn’t had time to worry about how she was feeling when she had first awoken.
“Are you sure? God, you’re lucky. I’m surprised it wasn’t worse.” He said in amazement grabbing a chunk of his greasy black hair and pushing it out of his eyes.
“Gerard, what happened last night? How did I get here? Did we meet up somewhere?” Despite the headache, Scarlet wanted to know what had happened.
“You don’t remember?” He asked.
Scarlet sadly shook her head.
“We went out, you, me, Asha, Frankie, Mikey, Ray and Bob. We all got wasted and then Asha left to go to some party. You and I went out to Bob’s car to have a line and when we got there I realised I left my wallet inside. So I went to go get it and when I got back you were passed out next to the car with a bleeding nose.” Gerard said still staring at Scarlet trying to figure out if she actually felt as good as she said she did.
“Oh.” Scarlet sighed.
“You scared the shit out of me. I wanted to take you to the hospital but you wouldn’t go. You tried to jump out of the car so I took you home but you didn’t have any keys. You passed out again so I just brought you back here.” Gerard said with a nervous laugh.
“Oh.” Scarlet replied again. She was slightly confused.
“So what have you been doing since we got here?” Scarlet asked.
“Nothing much. Just drawing and stuff. I couldn’t sleep when we got back here. I was worried you would go to sleep and never wake up. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” Gerard said quietly, finally breaking eye contact with Scarlet and looking at the floor.
“You stayed up all night looking after me?” Scarlet asked putting her hand to her chest. She was so touched. Gerard hardly knew her but was sweet enough to look out for her. Unlike Asha, who had apparently just left her.
‘I guess you could say that.” Gerard said feeling slightly uncomfortable.
“Cigarette?” He asked offering her his open pack trying desperately to change the subject.
“Cheers.” She said taking a smoke and lighting it up.
She inhaled deeply, pushing the smoke to the very bottom of her lungs. She closed her eyes, letting the rush consume her. She exhaled the smoke feeling as if she were blowing out all of the tension and negative energy that consumed her body.
“So, uh, you got plans for today?” Scarlet asked reaching across to the bedside table to her left to retrieve a large glass ashtray.
“Nothing really. I just have to take Bob’s car back to his house. Actually, he only lives a few blocks away from your place so I can drop you home on the way if you want.” Gerard suggested.
“Sounds good to me. Did you wanna go now?” Scarlet asked hoping he would say no. She wanted to spend more time with him, get to know him a little better. After all, he did save her life if everything he had told her was the truth.
“How about after coffee?” Gerard asked sensing she wanted to leave. He wanted to hang out with her, talk to her and get to know her but she didn’t seem to be all that keen. At least he could spend the 10 minutes in which it took him to have a coffee with her, even if she did just want to go home.
“Ok. I’ll just get dressed I’ll meet you upstairs?” she replied.
“Sure, you want a cup?” Gerard asked rising and walking over to the stairs that lead up to the house.
“No thanks. But I’ll be happy to watch you drink yours when I’m done.” She smiled before he disappeared up the stairs.
Once Gerard had closed the door Scarlet began searching his room for her belongings. She quickly gathered everything she thought she had brought with her and took one last look around for anything. She wandered over to the desk where Gerard had been sitting when she first awoke and spotted his sketch book. She knew it was rude to look through other people’s belongings without asking, but she couldn’t fight the temptation. She picked up the book and began to flick through it. Just as she had seen in his various artworks that hung throughout the house he was extremely talented, with all of his drawings falling into the horror or comic style of art, some could even be classified as both. Finally she got to the pages marked with yesterday and today’s date. The sketches were all in pencil and were all of a male and female character. Both appeared to be some sort of super hero, with large angel like wings and interesting gothic style armour and clothing. The female was beautiful at first glance with long flowing black and red hair and piercing grey eyes, and the male was very feminine with sharp angular facial features and long black choppy hair. On closer inspection the two figures appeared to look extremely familiar and it wasn’t until she really examined the sketches that she realised these were drawings of her and Gerard. She turned to the last page of the book that had been drawn on and her breath was immediately taken away from her. The drawing depicted the male character who looked like Gerard standing with his wings spread and arms outstretched towards the female character that resembled Scarlet. She was on the floor and appeared to be crying and bleeding from the wrists. She was reaching out to him, yet their hands never met. There was something in the characters’ eyes that said that their hands would never ever meet and it almost brought a tear to Scarlet’s eye. She was suddenly brought back to reality when she heard the door being opened from upstairs. She quickly closed the book and put it back where she had found it.
“You coming?” Gerard called from the door frame.
“Yeah, coming.” Scarlet said as she gathered her things and made her way up the stairs to a waiting Gerard.
