On the way to the Wedding Chapel Gerard had to reach over and grab my hand. I was sitting wringing both hands in lap. Hell, my nerves had kicked in full force. Donna noticed and smiled, “It’s normal to be nervous on your wedding day. Don’t worry about it.”
I smiled at her but said nothing. Gerard’s thumb was lightly caressing my fingertips. Okay if he was trying to calm me down it wasn’t working. The man’s touch sent fire through my body.
We arrived and went directly in. Mikey had made sure that the chapel would be closed to the public during our ceremony. As he helped me from the car Gerard leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Remember it’s all an act. Just smile and let them all see what they want to see.” I stared back at him. “Laura, I’m not saying this to be mean. I’m just telling you how I get through each day of my life. People really do see what they want to see. Right now these people with us want to see a normal happy couple in love. If we smile at the right moments that is what they will see.”
“But you’re saying that it’s really all a lie.” I whispered struggling to keep the pain from my voice.
“For me, my whole life is a lie. I’m afraid that by agreeing to join your life with mine you’ve condemned yourself to the same fate.”
Mikey walked over to us, “Everything okay?”
I was still staring at Gerard our eyes were locked. Suddenly I looked to Mikey and smiled, “Oh course. Gerard just knows how nervous I am and he’s trying to talk me through it.”
Mikey grinned, “Great. Well everything’s ready.” He walked back over to Alicia and they joined hands.
“See” Gerard whispered in my ear. You smiled at the right moment and now it’s all okay.”
I walked away from him with a comment. Donna and Don were being escorted down the aisle. Gerard and Mikey took their places at the front of the chapel.
“You ready?” Alicia asked me, concern laced her words.
I smiled just like Gerard said, “Yes I’m ready.” She gave me a quick hug as the pre-taped music filled the room. Slowly she started to walk down the aisle. I took a deep breath, prayed my nerves wouldn’t get the best of me and cause me to throw up, and followed her.
The ceremony was short and to the point. The old standard “Do you Gerard Arthur Way take this woman Laura Lula Bell to be your…”
Gerard snickered then covered it with a cough. I glared at him.
The minister coughed discreetly to get our attention and continued. Then suddenly we reached the part where he asked about the ring. Mikey handed it to Gerard who in turn slipped in on my finger while promising to love me forever. God, I felt hollow. I looked down at the beautiful diamond and tried not to cry. However Gerard’s words echoed in my brain. I smiled. I played my part and smiled.
“You may kiss the bride” the minister said when we reached the end of the charade. When his lips met mine I thought my heart would break. I love this man with all my heart. No fucking act on my part. We broke away and he pulled me close to whisper in my ear, “I don’t want this to be an act.”
I looked into his eyes and smiled. A real smile. Suddenly Mikey, Alicia, Don and Donna surrounded us. Gerard put his arm around me and held me close.
On the way to dinner we were all chatting happily when Gerard burst out laughing. I gave him a questioningly look.
“Sorry, but I just remembered the minister saying your name.”
I knew his parents would probably think it was strange that he hadn’t heard it before now so I covered, “I wish you would stop making fun of my name.” I said jokingly.
He looked over at his parents; “One of the reasons I married her was so she wouldn’t have to deal with Lula Bell anymore”
I poked him in the ribs, “I’m not sure Laura Lula Way sounds a whole lot better.”
I saw the look on his face when he realized I was a Way now. I was his wife. For better or worse. Shit, bets on that one?
The dinner was excellent. I loved his parents. They both told me I was now their daughter. Crap I almost cried. Several times during dinner Gerard tried to slide his hand under my dress. Each time I would slap his hand away under the table. The guy wasn’t gonna get a free feel. He owed me from this morning and I intended on collecting before anything else happened between us. Oh hell, I was getting hot thinking about what would happen when we got back to our suite. Gerard was still talking to everyone at the table but I could tell he had tuned into my emotions. He leaned over and whispered “You’ll scream.”
As we all left the restaurant Mikey had a surprise for us. “We’re sending you two back to the hotel alone in the limo. We’ve got a car to take us back.
“Actually” Don said putting his arm around Donna “Think we’re gonna walk back.”
We said out goodbyes and got into the limo. Gerard lowered the glass to speak to the driver, “Can you drive us around Vegas a bit?”
“Certainly sir, just let me know when you would like me to drive to your hotel.” The driver said before the glass partition was raised.
Gerard sat back in the seat and put his arm around me. “So” he said. I waited but he didn’t elaborate.
“So” I said. I too just nodded my head.
“Fuck this” he suddenly turned and pulled me to him, “I’ll hate myself forever for saying this but I’m fucking glad I married you. It’s selfish of me cause you deserve someone so much better than me but I can’t help it.” His lips came down on mine hard.
When we finally broke apart I looked him in the eye, “Tell the driver to start for our hotel.”
I smiled at her but said nothing. Gerard’s thumb was lightly caressing my fingertips. Okay if he was trying to calm me down it wasn’t working. The man’s touch sent fire through my body.
