Chapter 4

“Thanks for stepping up with this charity thing man.” Patrick’s voice came through the side kick. “This was one of the things I really wanted to make it to, but with Marie being on bed rest I just don’t feel comfortable leaving her.”

Pete was sitting at his desk, signing some paperwork for Decaydance Records when he had decided to check in with Patrick.

“Nah man.” Pete assured. “I already told you, I understand and I don’t mind. My schedules clear, and I’m already here in LA. Besides, Ash is going to go with me.”

There was a noticeable pause on the line, then “Ahem…That’s great.” Another pause then, “I still feel really bad. Usually we’re all there, and this year it’s all falling on your shoulders.”

They were talking about the yearly charity event for FAMILIES FOREWARD, a foundation that raises awareness and money for the homeless and disadvantaged families of California.

This year Pete would be attending the event without the other guys of FOB. Joe was on vacation with his girlfriend Hannah somewhere tropical, and Andy was in Chicago taking time with his Grandmother who was not doing very well.

Patrick had been all set to fly to into L.A. from Chicago to attend with Pete, when a routine prenatal exam revealed that Marie had high blood pressure. Deciding not to take any chances, her doctor had promptly put her on bed rest.

“What?” asked Pete, when he heard the slight pause and discomfort in Patrick’s voice. “She really wants to go!” he was now on the defense.

Patrick cleared his throat before answering, “Nothing man, I really think that’s great. It’s just….she does know this is a pretty hands on thing, right?” “I mean, you really have to interact with some of the families.” After another uncomfortable silence, then he mumbled, “Just didn’t think that was her thing…..”

At this Pete purposely dropped the pen he had been writing with and threw his head back against his captains chair in agitation.

“ Dude she’s not an alien, I think I can take her out to interact with a few people.” he was being sarcastic now and he didn‘t care.

Patrick knew where this conversation was leading so he quickly backtracked. “I’m really glad she’s going with you Pete. You guys will have fun, that event is always a blast.”

Though still irritated, Pete just decided to let it go too, “Alright…..Hey, you tell Marie to take it easy, that’s my God daughter she’s carrying around in there.”

You could hear the grin in Patrick’s voice when he answered, “I don’t think telling her do anything is very wise these days. With her mood swings, she’s more likely to rip my balls off than listen to me.”

Pete winced as the visual of that scenario ran through his head. “Well let’s avoid that if possible, just tell her I love her and hope she feels better soon?”

“Will do!” Patrick replied cheerfully. “Let me know how it goes tomorrow.”

“Alright, bye.” Pete pressed end on his sidekick with a shake of his head the picked the pen back up and began signing again.

The Next Day
FAIRPLEX : LA County fairgrounds

“Um honey?” Ashlee squeaked.
“Yeah?” Pete answered distractedly. He was eagerly taking stock of all the cool kiddie rides set up everywhere. His eyes lit up when they landed on something that looked like a mini rollercoaster.

“Pete!” Something in her voice made Pete’s head snap around to look at her. Ashlee had a funny look on her face, as she seemed to be watching the excited kids that were running all around the place.

“Were suppose to just mingle with them?” Ashlee‘s voice was giving away her nervousness. Pete grinned as he put his arm around her.

“Yeah! Just talk to the kids, sign some autographs if they want them, ride some of the rides, just relax and have fun.” He gave her an encouraging squeeze. “Me and the guys do this every year, and we always have a blast.”

A slight frown came over Pete’s face as he remembered something, “Except last year kinda’ ended on a sour note. Patrick got sick after he rode The Merry Go Round. That was his fault though!” Pete quickly added. I told him not to eat that last hotdog.”

Ashlee was looking at him as if he had suddenly sprouted another head.

Soon they were approached by an attractive older woman with grey hair. She was dressed casually in jeans and a FAMILIES FOREWARD t-shirt. The event name tag she wore identified her as Kay Larson, EVENT CORDINATOR.

“Mr. Wentz! I’m so glad you could make it.” She smiled as she put her hand to give a warm handshake. “I just wanted to thank you again for your participation today, as well as your generous donation.

Pete smiled as he answered her, “ Please call me Pete, and I’m more than happy to be here! My band mates wanted to pass along their regret for not being here this year though.”

“That’s quit alright, though it looks as if you did bring someone with you?” She looked over at Ashlee with a smile.

“Oh! Sorry, this is my fiancé’ Ashlee.” Pete offered. Ashlee smiled, “Nice to meet you.” The two women briefly shook hands. “Are you going to join in and play with the kids awhile?” The older woman asked.

“Uh…Well I was thinking I could just mingle with some of the parents..” Ashlee offered hopefully.

Kay eyed the uncomfortable young woman and was able to immediately pick up on how out of her element she seemed. She decided to try and help the poor girl out. “I have a great idea. Why don’t I show you the area where the younger toddlers and babies are with their parents.” she offered.

This sounded like a much better option to Ashlee, so she immediately agreed. “Yeah, that sounds like fun!” She turned to Pete. “You go ahead and have fun, I’m just going to go visit the babies!” This was said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster.

Pete studied her face for a moment then leaned over and smacked her lips with a quick kiss. “Alright, if your sure. You have fun to. He turned to Ms. Lawson, “You’ll show her where she’s going?” He wanted to make sure he wasn’t abandoning Ashlee, but he was ready to go have some fun.

With Ms. Larson’s assurance that Ashlee was in good hands, he bounced off toward the giant inflatable slide and the line of kids waiting to ride it.

*****

Pete was having a blast! He was currently having a blast jumping in the inflatable Moon Bounce with several smaller kids. He suspected that he exceeded the recommended weight limit but he wasn’t going to let that stop the fun.

Just as he was perfecting his jump, spin, bounce maneuver that had several of the little boys falling all over the place trying to duplicate, he thought he heard his name being called.

“Mr. Wentz!….ahem.. Pete!” This time he was sure he had heard someone calling him. An adorable little red headed boy of about the age of 5 or 6 tugged on Pete’s pants leg to get his attention. “Yeah buddy?” he asked as he peered down at the freckled little guy. The little boy silently pointed toward the protective netting that separated the outside from the inside.

When Pete looked to where he was being directed to, he saw Ms. Larson standing there waiting for his attention. He approached her with a smile, “Hi! I just want to tell you that you guys have done an excellent job this year, this has been a..” “Mr.Wentz, your fiancé’ sent me to get you.” she interrupted his train of thought.

Pete gave confused scowl and started again, “Well I was just about to finish up here and …” again he was interrupted “She said that she needs you now.” This time the slight urgency that was in her voice registered.

“Is everything alright?” Pete was starting to get a little worried now. What could have possibly happened in the short hour and a half since he had last seen Ashlee to have her send someone to get him?

This time sounding a bit nervous Ms. Larson answered, “She’ll be ok .” she quickly assured. “But perhaps you should go talk to her right away.” Pete blinked at her for a moment, then turned to make his way toward the exit. “Sorry little dude.” he said to the boy that had been patiently waiting for him to come back and jump with them some more. “I gotta’ go now.” The little boy just shrugged as if to say, “your loss” and happily went right back to jumping.

Pete followed Ms. Lawson to a large building that was off to the side of the fair grounds. Once there, she led him through the inside to a door marked administration.

Despite Ms. Larson’s assurances, he was really getting concerned. What if something bad had happened to Ash? ‘Ms. Larson would have said something if she was hurt…right?’ he thought. Pete pushed open the door not sure what to expect.

Inside he found a somewhat unusual sight. A very ruffled looking Ashlee sat holding a clear ice bag to her arm and with her mascara streaked below her eyes, it looked as if she might have been crying. ‘Fuck.’ he thought.

“God babe, what happened!” Pete exclaimed. As soon as she saw him, Ashlee ran into his arms and began to whimper. She was also saying something in a somewhat high pitched voice that he couldn’t even begin to make out.

“Shh…Slow down Ash. Shhhh..” He was trying his best to sooth her. He led her back to the small loveseat that she had been sitting on before. They sat down together with one of Pete’s arms wrapped around her. He spotted a bottle of water sitting on the table in front of them. “This yours?” When she nodded her head, he opened it and encouraged her to have some.

After taking several sips of water and a few minutes in which to collect herself, Pete couldn’t wait another second, “What the hell happened Ash?!” Had she been attacked!?

Like a flood, Ashlee quickly shared what she had been through. Those were the words that she used. “Everything was going fine till they handed me that baby, and it was really, really cute..” she rushed on, “but then it barfed all over my shirt and that shit ran down into my Louis Vuitton bag! Pete you know how much I love that bag. She went on to explain how utterly “gross” and “disgusting” it was, and how they never should have just handed her a baby that could just randomly throw up on people.

Pete was listening intently his face blank of any expression. Ashlee took that as encouragement to continue. “Then that woman got mad at me and started telling me off..” At this Pete interrupted. “What? What woman, and why did she get mad at you?”

“Well, I was really upset cause you know…my bag is like ruined now!” then she hesitated. “I might have let…a few…bad words slip out.” Then in another rush of words she spat, “But most those kids can’t even talk, how are they going to know that Fuck is a bad word?!”

When he heard that, Pete’s eyes widened and a look of disbelief slowly began to work it’s way onto his face.

“That’s not the worst of it though! I was just sitting there waiting for that Larson woman to come back so I could find you, and this little boy just walked right up to me and bit me! Bit me Pete!!” Ashlee’s eyes were almost comically widened “When Daddy hears about this, he is going to sue the hell out of these people.”

Pete was really starting to get pissed. He had been rushed away from the most real fun that he’d had in awhile, while under the impression that something was wrong with his fiancé’. Only it turns out the so called emergency was a baby had spit up on her, which in turn freaked her out and then caused her to show her ass.

If all this wasn’t bad enough, she was now threatening in a round about way to sue a charity organization for fucks sake! He knew she could be a drama queen sometimes, but he was still shocked by the way she was overreacting.

With that thought Pete had heard enough, “What the hell Ashlee?!” He looked down at her arm that she had been cradling all along, and he could only see a slight red mark. No blood or missing chunks of flesh in sight. “I can’t believe you are acting like this.” he hissed. His eyes were flashing fire now.

“Now I’m going out of this room to assure everyone that your not DYING and try not to be embarrassed anymore than I already am!” This last bit was said in a quiet shout.

He turned abruptly around and stormed back out the door, leaving Ashlee standing there with a completely stunned look on her face. She just couldn’t understand, SHE was the victim here, how could he be mad at her? ‘These people aren’t even important, why would he be embarrassed?!’ she thought.

Pete exited the door and the first person he saw was Ms. Larson and a anxious young woman holding a small toddler of about two. As angry as he was feeling at that moment, he tried to give a reassuring smile.

Ms. Larson was worried and you could tell by the sound of voice. “Mr.Wentz, is she alright? Do we need to call a doctor to look at her arm? She wouldn’t let anyone else look at it. She just wanted us to get you. ”

The woman holding the child groaned then rushed to say, “I am SO sorry Mr. Wentz! Daniel is going through this stage right now. He just wandered over to Ms. Simpson and before I could stop him….well you know.” The woman looked embarrassed as hell and truly sorry.

Pete tried his best to assure both women that it was no big deal and that Ashlee had just overreacted a bit. “I think she thought the bite was worse than it really was…” Pete tried to lamely to explain her behavior. He reached over and patted the rambunctious toddler’s head who was currently wriggling to get out of his Mother’s arms.

Even with his reassurance both women still looked uneasy. Only imagining the things Ashlee might have said with the state she had been in, Pete couldn’t blame them. He looked at Ms. Larson again, “ If you don’t mind, I’m just going to let her stay in there while I finish the meet and greet stuff.”

Ms. Larson looked surprised at this, “I understand if you need to take her home. I can just explain that an emergency came up.” she offered.

Pete refused to disappoint all the people that were depending on him to be here. ‘Not over this stupid shit.’ he thought.

“No, this is important and Ashlee will be fine while I finish up what I need to do here.” He flashed his most charming smile at both women.

With that settled Pete walked back toward the room where Ashlee was waiting for him. Most likely believing they were going to leave soon. Well, he had a surprise for her. Pete steeled his resolve and turned the handle to open the door.
