“Mum, Gerard’s on the phone” called Emily from the hallway, Mrs Way smiled as she took the phone off her and walked into the lounge room, Emily sighed and walked up to her room, she loved her brothers so much it made her cry, she just wished her life was as exciting as theirs, sure she could sing like her brother Gerard and Mikey did teach her the bass really well, she also knew how to dance, but her mother always favoured her boys even though she loved them both she just felt that Gerard needed her with his past drug problems and Mikey needed her because he had just gotten married and needed some adult advice but with Emily, she was always too good to be true, no problems at school she didn’t drink and there was no boys on her scene, Mrs Way was indeed lucky.
Emily sat on her bed and slowly closed her eyes, her visions about her future were not set, she loved the thought of being a musician was cool but her brothers were doing that, she wanted to stand out and wanted to feel something, something in her heart and make it real.
“Emily please come down stairs” called her mother, Emily took a deep breath and walked down the family stairs, she smiled when she saw her mother
“yes” she replied, Mrs Way smiled
“Gerard said that he wants you to meet them in England, I said yes only if you call me every day and make sure they are okay, I want a full report” she said, Emily nodded and hugged her mother
“Mum I will look after them you know me, I know how worried you are from both of them, just remember I will be there” she replied making her mother smiled more
“well go and pack, you plane leaves at three tomorrow morning” she said, Emily gasped and nodded as she sprinted up stairs and ran to her wardrobe trying to find her winter clothes, Mrs way walked in with a suitcase and started to pack the pack of clothes that Emily was throwing on her bed, Emily stopped looking and stared at her mother
“why are you helping me?” she asked, Mrs Way smiled and looked at her
“no reason I just love my daughter that’s all” she replied, Emily smirked and grabbed a jacket and threw it at her
“please don’t lie to me” replied Emily as she picked up her boots and shoved them in her suitcase
“well you will have to wait and see when you get there” she replied, Emily sighed as she finished packing as her mother hummed a song, not just any song it was Famous last words, the hottest song being played these days.
“mum do you think it’s that cold in England, I am sure shirts will be okay” said Emily as she watched her mother put another heavy winter jacket in
“it’s snowing at the moment, Gerard told me to make sure you pack warm and he also wants his jacket” said Mrs Way walking out to Gerard old room and coming back with a huge jacket and stuffing it in the already full suitcase
“no you’re lucky they love you as Gerard has made sure a car will be here at 1am, make sure your awake and ready as I do not want to be woken up okay” said Mrs Way, Emily nodded and set her alarm for midnight so she could shower and eat something, her nerves rising about being on a plane by herself.
“I am going to cook dinner, we are having garlic chicken your favourite, you’re by yourself on getting your hand luggage ready okay” she said and left Emily alone, Emily smiled as she liked being alone, she walked over and grabbed two bags, one for her wallet, phone and ipod and the other for her camera, some books and some makeup and personal things, when she had finished Emily walked to the bathroom and had a long hot shower wondering why Gerard wanted her so badly and why her mother wouldn’t tell her,
“Emily time to eat, Dinner is ready” called her mother, Emily jumped out and quickly put on her daggy pants and a loose sweatshirt and ran down the stairs
“your late” said Mrs Way, Emily sat down
“I was in the shower, I am sorry” she said, Mrs Way smiled and served the dinner
“enjoy your last home cooked meal for a few weeks” she said, Emily smiled and had her dinner slowly and listen talk excitedly about going over and how lucky she should be, Emily smiled when she had too and agreed when she felt right, Emily knew to keep a low at home, she knew her mother wanted her be perfect and find the perfect man in her life, her grades in high school were perfect but when she left after feeling that it wasn’t her thing, Mrs Way looked at her and frowned
“what happened to you? Some days I wonder, all you do is nod at me thinking that is what I want” she said quite sourly, Emily felt tears rising in her eyes,
“I don’t know any more mum, I just want to please you” she replied looking at her plate, Mrs Way grunted telling Emily that dinner was over
“goodnight mother, sleep well” said Emily as she got up and rinsed her plate, placing it in the dishwasher Gerard bought her and went up the stairs, she climbed into bed and closed her eyes, listening to her mother clean the kitchen and turning on the television as she watched the news every night, Emily slowly drifted to sleep.
Emily woke up to her mobile alarm bells ringing, she quickly turned it off and slowly crawled out of bed, knowing she didn’t have that much sleep she walked slowly to the bathroom without the lights on so her mother wouldn’t wake up, Emily turned the hot water on and slowly let the cold on making sure the water was perfect as she climbed in and felt instantly awake, her mind aware of the excitement of seeing her brothers again and the nervousness of getting on a plane by herself, Emily quickly got dressed and went back into her bedroom, she looked at the clock and realised it was ten to one and quickly grabbed her bags and walked down the stairs quietly as she reached the front door and stepped outside, even thought it was spring there, there was a crisp coolness in the air which made her rug up some more.
Emily sat down and took out a cigarette and slowly lit it, taking the smoke and feeling relieved, her mother didn’t know but Gerard had given Emily her first cigarette and from then on it was his and hers secret, but without Gerard, Emily would not have made choices in her life, it would entirely be up to her mother which was the last thing Mikey and Gerard wanted for their sister, They knew she was special somehow but they had to wait.
The car pulled up and the driver walked out and smiled
“hi your brother wanted me to give you this, its tickets and a small note” he replied and handed Emily the envelope and grabbed her suitcase and bags
“thanks” said Emily as she walked to the car and climbed in, the driver closed the boot and got into the car as he started the car and went to the airport, Emily looked at the envelope and slowly opened it, she saw the tickets and smiled as she found the note it read –
Sis, time for a sea change time to see us, we miss you all of us, including bob, We can’t wait to see you and show you England, it’s fantastic, well the last time we saw it, I know I haven’t seen you in a while but I know you have grown up, but not too much I hope, I love you Emily, Gerard xoxo
Emily sniffed a little as she wiped her eyes and stuffed the note in her bad as well with the tickets, the driver started to hum to the radio as they arrived to the airport,
“Miss Way, we are here” he replied as he opened the door and got out, Emily grabbed her bag as she quickly got out and smiled as the guy handed her, her bags
“thank you so much” she replied as he nodded and got back into his car and drove off, Emily found the right gate and walked up to the front desk
“Hi, I am Emily Way” she said as she handed the lady the tickets and her passport, the lady smiled and clicked at the computer
“Welcome Emily, first class is boarding now, so please make your way through” she replied, Emily smiled
“thank you” she said softly and grabbed her hand on luggage and walked down the tunnel, there was a man and a women waiting at the entrance
“Miss Way you are in 12D, I will show you where you are sitting, I am Julie I will be serving you this morning” said Julie, Emily smiled and followed the lady
“I am Emily, please call me that” she said, Julie smiled and took her hand luggage
“try to get some rest, it’s a ten hour flight” said Julie, Emily smiled and nodded as she was handed a pillow and a blanket slowly falling asleep as the rest of the passengers boarded and the plane headed off to England.
