“Are you ready yet?”

“Just a minute you were early.” Barbara was finishing her makeup for the night out with her friend.

“There. How do I look?”

“Better than you have.”

“Thanks.”

“I just mean, that since you and Tim broke up your haven’t looked that good.”

“Well, I guess coming home and finding your fiancée in bed with his secretary does something to you.”

“I know. I’m sorry I said anything. Come on lets go.”

“I have no idea why I said yes to this.”

“You know you want to go. Come on.” Kendra took Barbara’s hand and they left.

@~

“There it is. Boston’s Annual Bachelor Auction, room 225.” Kendra said.

“Oh, god. Can I leave?”

“No. You promised.”

Kendra and Barbara went to the second floor. They checked in and found their seats.

“Are you nervous?” Kendra asked.

“Me? No. I have no plans of buying or whatever.”

“Sure. Wait until you see these men. I’m going to go for the Brendon guy.” She pointed to his picture in the booklet.

“He’s cute.”

“Cute. The man is gorgeous. Look at those lips. Here, you look for a guy.”

Kendra handed the booklet to her.

“No, I told you I was just coming for you.”

“Just look at it.”

“Fine.” Barbara paged through the booklet and near the end her heart stopped.

Attention bidder! It’s lot 45
He’s got a decent voice, he’s got that crooked smile
Hold on. You haven’t heard the best yet
He writes good storylines, he’s got those honest eyes.

Kendra and Barbara sat through many different bachelors and many hungry single women.

“Are you sure this is legal?” Barbara asked.

“Yes! These aren’t man whores. Unless, you want them to be.”

“Your terrible.”

“Here is our next bachelor. Mr. Patrick Stump. He’s 23 years old, works in the music industry. Is shy, but has a wacky sense of humor.”

“He’s a cutie. You should bid for him.”

“Kendra, he’s ten years younger than me.”

“Like I said, they aren’t,”

“Yeah, okay.”

Barbara lifted her sign up.

“We have one bidder. And another.” It went on for a half hour.

“I’m tapped out.”

“Don’t you dare. You’ve gotten this far. Get that man.”

“Kendra, I have no more money.”

“It’ll be alright. I have some.” Barbara held up the sign.

“Going once, twice. Sold to the woman in the back.”

“What the hell did I do?”

Barbara put her head in her hands.

“No time to think. My boy is coming up.”

Barbara was getting sick by the minute. Kendra got Brendon and had a huge smile on her face.

“A month of that ass.”

“Kendra! You said that they aren’t man whores.”

“I can’t help it if I’ll be dropping a lot of things that he’ll need to pick up.”

“Wait. What did you say? A month?”

“Yeah. We paid for them for a month.”

“I’m going to be sick.”

“Later. Time to get the guys.”

Kendra and Barbara were led into a different room.

“I’m scared to death. What am I going to say to him?”

“Barbara, just talk to him.”

“Alright ladies, we’ll call your number and you’ll be shown a room where your bachelor is. From there you can go back to your house, out to eat, whatever you’d like.”

“Here, drink this.” Kendra gave Barbara a glass of water.

“Number 21.”

“That’s me. Talk to you tomorrow. Bye, Barbara.”

“Bye.”

Barbara paced in the back.

“Number 24.” She was led into a room. Her bachelor stood up.

“Hello, I’m Patrick.” She shook his hand.

“Hi, I’m Barbara. Um. I really don’t know what to do. My friend invited me. She said I should get out since everything with Tim. She told me that I should buy you and I’m ready to faint.”

“Slow down and sit down. I don’t need you to faint on me.”

Barbara sat in a chair. Patrick kneeled in front of her and placed his hands on her knees.

“Take a few deep breaths. Do you want something to drink?”

“No. I’ll be fine.”

Barbara closed her eyes and took a few more deep breaths. She opened her eyes and stared into a pair of deep green eyes.

“Hi.” She smiled.

“I guess I made a fool of myself.” Patrick stood up.

“No. I understand. I’m nervous myself. Are you alright?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“What would you like to do?”

“I don’t know. Uh. I haven’t had any supper. Would you like to go out?”

“Sounds good. Let me get my bag.”

Barbara waited as Patrick got his bag.

“I’m ready.”

Barbara drove to the nearest restaurant.

“I really don’t know what you say.”

“It’s okay. I don’t either. Let’s just talk. No pressure. So, are you from Boston?”

“No. I’m from Minnesota.”

“Really? I’m from Chicago.”

“What do you do?”

“I’m a producer. Sometimes I sing and write music.”

“I’ll want to hear you.”

Patrick smiled. Barbara was already falling in love.

@~

“Well, this is my apartment. Nothing too fancy.”

“It’s nice. Um, where am I going to sleep?”

“That’s the problem. I really wasn’t expecting you. I only have one bedroom.”

“Oh, I can sleep on the couch.”

“The couch is really bad.”

“It’ll be alright.”

“Okay. I’ll get you some blankets and I’m going to go to bed.”

“Let me help you.”

Barbara found some blankets and a pillow for Patrick and they went to sleep. Three hours later Patrick was still tossing and turning. He finally walked to Barbara’s bedroom and knocked on the door.

“Barbara, are you awake.” He opened the door.

“Yeah, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing. But your right. That couch is terrible. Can I sleep in here? I promise not to hog the bed or anything.”

“Uh, I guess so. It’s big enough. One of an early wedding gift.”

“What? Your getting married.”

“Oh, no. I guess I didn’t tell you.” Patrick climbed into bed.

“I was going to get married. I found my ex in bed with his secretary.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s better now, then if I got married and found out. But it still hurts.”

“I can’t imagine.”

Patrick turned and began playing with her hair until she fell asleep.

So take him home for just nine ninety five
He’ll sing the songs you like
He’ll keep you warm at night
Back down, cash out, that’s the city for you
Breakdown and back out and get what’s coming to you
When you said you were falling apart
I thought you meant that you were falling apart
Oh~

“Patrick, can you help me with this box?” He came out of the bedroom.

“Sure. What is it?”

“A book case. Can you put it together for me?”

“That’s why I’m here.”

“I know. It’s just hard for me to ask you for help. I mean your not my boyfriend or anything.”

“Would you like me to be?” Barbara looked at Patrick.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t of said that.”

She ran to the bedroom with tears running down her face.

“Barbara, are you alright?”

He walked to the bed and sat down.

“What’s wrong?” He rubbed her back.

“Today was the day I was suppose to get married and I seen them at the store.”

“Oh, god. Did the asshole say anything?” Barbara laughed.

“No. They didn’t see me. I don’t love him, but it still really hurts.”

Patrick laid next to her and took her hand.

“Can I tell you something without you thinking I’m completely nuts?”

“Patrick, I already think your nuts.”

“You think your funny. Anyway, I think I’m falling in love with you.”

Barbara stared at the ceiling.

“We’ve only known each other a few weeks.”

“I know. That’s why I think I’m crazy. I’m sorry.”

Barbara turned and was facing Patrick.

“Are you sure? I’m pretty messed up.”

“I’ve been with you for 2 weeks. We have been together most of the time. I’ve met your friends, I’ve slept with you, and almost seen you naked.”

“What? And that’s not a good list. Do you really know me? And I really don’t know you. For your information when we sleep together we sleep and nothing else. Now, when did you see me naked?”

“Never mind. I think I need to work on that bookcase.”

“Get back here. Now spill.”

“I thought you were in the bathroom and I went to the bedroom and you were changing. You had jeans on. All I seen was your back.”

“Are you telling me the truth?”

“Of course! I wouldn’t lie to you.”

“I believe you.”

“Do you feel a little better?”

“Yeah. Do you know what would make me feel even better?”

“No.”

“You singing to me.”

“Okay. I’m really leaving now.”

“Please.”

“Alright. But I sound horrible without any instruments.”

“Oh, be quiet. Just sing.”

I’m a stitch away from making it
And a scar away from falling apart, apart
Blood cells pixilated
And eyes dilate
And the full moon pills
Got me out on the streets at night
Cut it loose
Watch you work the room
Cut it loose
Watch you work the room

Barbara fell asleep in Patrick’s arms.

I’m not the type to forget about nights like this
When every single move that I make
Is document and scored for style points
The once ambitious one now holds
The smoking gun
And if I die in my sleep are you still willing to be everything
You promised you would be

Barbara and Patrick came home from a night at Kendra’s.

“Do you want to watch a movie?” Patrick asked.

“No. I’m a little tired.”

“Are you alright?”

“Yeah. I’m just worried what this is.”

“What do you mean?”

“Between us. What is going to happen in a week and a half? You go back to Chicago and I’ll be left with a cold bed.”

“Come here.” Barbara sat closer to Patrick.

“You are very special to me. I feel as if I have known you forever. I don’t want to leave but I have to. I will come and visit as much as I can.”

“I shouldn’t feel this way. We just a friends right now. I’m going to miss you.”

“We haven’t talked about what we are though.” The doorbell rang.

“I’ll be right back.”

Barbara got up to answer the door.

“What are you doing here?”

Patrick heard her say and he got up.

“What’s going on?”

“Um, Patrick this is Tim.”

“Who are you?”

“I’m Patrick.”

“He’s a friend. Patrick, why don’t you go to the living room. Tim and I are going to talk.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Tim watched Patrick leave.

“Kinda downgraded didn’t you.”

“Shut up. You don’t know him. Now, what the fuck are you here for?”

“I want you back.”

“What?”

“You heard me. I miss you.”

“What about Kelly?”

“She left me.”

“So, now you want me. I will not go through the pain again. Why don’t you leave.”

“No, I love you.”

“I don’t love you.”

“Come on. You haven’t fallen out of love with me. You couldn’t of. Not after everything we shared.”

“Tim, I can’t deal with this. Please just leave.” Tim took her into his arms.

“I’m sorry, baby. I wish I could go back in time.”

“Do you know how it was for me to tell everyone the engagement was over and everything.”

“I should have been man enough and done it. It wasn’t fair to you.”

“Tim, can you give me some time to make my decision.”

“Are you in love with him?”

“I wouldn’t say it’s love, but I do feel something for him. We aren’t a couple.”

“Well, what is he doing here?”

“Kendra and I went to a bachelor auction a few weeks ago. I bought him.”

“Seems to me that is the only way he could get a woman.”

“Tim, I’m not going to have you put him down.”

“I’m sorry. Do you want to go out for coffee or something?”

“I’m not sure. It’s late.”

“Just for one cup.”

“Alright. Let me get my jacket.”

Barbara went to the living room and picked up her jacket.

“I’m going out with Time for some coffee.”

“Your not going back to him are you?”

“I don’t know.” Patrick stood up.

“You can’t be serious. He cheated on you.”

“I know. But he said he was sorry.”

“He’s sorry now, but what about the next time.”

“Patrick, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Your upset over this when you shouldn’t be. You don’t know Tim and you really don’t know me.”

“I guess your right. If you need me I’ll be here.”

“Okay.” Patrick watched Barbara walk away.

@~

“Here’s your coffee.”

“Thank you.” Tim sat across from Barbara.

“How’s work going?”

“Alright. I have a big case coming up in a few months.” Tim said.

All Barbara could think of is when he said that once before and a few months later finding him and Kelly.

“Well, good luck.”

“Thanks. I missed being with you.”

“You had Kelly.”

“She wasn’t you.”

“Stop that. You know what. I’m done. I don’t want you. I never did. I don’t know why I came with you.”

She got up and took some money out of her purse.

“Here’s the money for the coffee.”

“Barbara, wait. Don’t leave.”

“Give me one good reason to stay.” Tim didn’t say anything.

“That’s what I thought. See you around.”

Barbara walked home wanting to see Patrick.

@~

“Patrick, Patrick.”

Barbara went through the house.

“Hey, I’m right here. Is everything alright?”

“Yes. I was sitting there and it hit me. What was I doing with him? He’s a jerk and always will be one. You were right. There will be a next time. I can’t go through that again.” She hugged him.

“Now, before he came you were saying something about what we were or something.”

“Yeah, I wanted to know what is going on between us. Are we just friends or do we want it to be more.”

“I’d love it to be more.”

“Me too. So, you want to try and work on the more part.” Barbara smiled.

Patrick bent down and kissed her. He ran his hands down her sides.

“Patrick, can we go to the bedroom?”

“You sure?”

“Yes. Now move it.”

Patrick and Barbara went into the bedroom. Patrick moved to her and started kissing her.

“I can’t get enough of you. When I seen that you bought me I was so glad. You didn’t look like some of those scary women.” Barbara laughed.

She took off his shirt and ran her hands up and down his chest while kissing his neck. Her hands stopped at the waistband of his jeans.

“Well, don’t stop now.” Patrick smiled.

She unbuttoned and unbuckled his jeans and slide them off with his boxers. She took him into her hand and rubbed up and down. Patrick moaned. Barbara got on her knees and took him in her mouth. Moving back and forth sucking.

“Okay, okay. I love that, but please stop.” She stood up.

“What’s the matter Mr. Stumph. Can’t take it?”

“No, I can’t. Now, you look a little overdressed.”

He slipped the straps off her shoulders and her dress fell down to her feet. Patrick ran his fingers over her breasts and reached in the back and unsnapped her bra. He pulled it off and placed his hands over her breasts grazing her nipples with his thumb. She slide her panties off while she kissed Patrick. She took his hand and led him to the bed. She laid down and he laid next to her.

“Um, I don’t have anything. I really wasn’t thinking I would be doing this.”

“I have some in the drawer. Not that I have sex with every guy I meet.”

“I know.” He kissed her nose. Patrick grabbed a condom and ripped it open and Barbara took it from him and slide it on his cock. Patrick slowly entered her.

“Oh god. You feel amazing.” He kissed her neck, moving in and out of her.

“Wrap your legs around my waist.”

“Oh, Patrick. I’m coming.” Barbara ran her nails down his back.

“Patrick!” He quickened the pace.

“Oh fuck. Right there, Barbara.” Patrick laid on her.

“I’m not hurting you, am I?”

“No.”

“I’ll be right back.”

Patrick got up and went into the bathroom and then climbed back into bed. Barbara went into his arms.

“That was very nice.” Barbara said.

“Just nice?”

“Wonderful, then. More than I thought it would be.”

Back down, cash out that’s the city for you
Break down, back out and get what’s coming to you
When you said you were falling apart
I thought you meant that you were falling apart
Oh~
Will you be the first one to tell the neighborhood papers
And all my family and friends that still care?
Did you buy what I sold and did you feel what I told you?
I hope that you still do
Will you promise yourself that this isn’t all we’ve had

“Patrick, do you have everything?”

“Yeah. I’m all packed.”

He wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I’m going to miss you so much.” He kissed her neck.

“You sure you don’t want to come for a few days.”

“No. I’d like to, but I have work to do.”

“Alright. I’ll try and come out in a month. I’m going to be pretty busy until then.”

“Patrick, this isn’t going to work. You live in Chicago. I need someone to curl up at night. I don’t want phone calls or flowers. I want you.”

“Sweetheart, we can make it work.”

“Are you serious? Please Patrick, just go.”

“Barbara, don’t do this.”

“Patrick! Leave, I told you it’s over.” He walked to her.

“It’s not. But I understand. I’ll call you in a few days. Take care of yourself.”

He kissed her on the lips.

Two months later

The taxi pulled up to the curb and Barbara paid the driver. She got her bag and walked to the door and knocked.

“Barbara! Wh, um, what are you doing here?”

“I made a mistake. I hope I’m not to late. Can I come in?”

“Sure. Here let me take your bag.”

They went into Patrick’s house and sat on the couch.

“So, what are you doing here?”

“First, I want to apologize. I’m sorry I never returned your phone calls, emails, letters. I think I might have been afraid. I don’t know. Can you forgive me?”

“Yes. You know I will.”

“I have to ask you this. I hope I didn’t make a mistake. Your not seeing anyone, are you?” “What if I was?”

“I suppose I would go back.”

“I’m not. I haven’t thought about anyone except you.”

Barbara went into Patrick’s arms and kissed him. They fell back on the couch.

“I’m moving to Chicago.”

“What?”

“I asked for a transfer. I need to find an apartment. You wouldn’t know any would you?”

Patrick smiled.
