I agree with your thoughts on the characters.

I personally view Ron as a vaguely neutral character, not really in Harry's inner circle he is more of a distraction than an asset. His insecurity issues are very real but he is also a very typical teen boy with zero social sense when it comes to the nuances that adults and girls pick up on oh so easily.

I also agree that the ideal time to introduce Ginny as a love interest would have been either at the end of GoF or during OotP. At the very least, have a friendship develop from there so that the events in HBP are not so surprising and out-of-the-blue.

Albus Dumbledore: Chess-player extraordinare no doubt. However, his ethics are questionable. It would have been nice if when at "King's Cross" he had candidly told Harry that he expected to be punished in the afterlife for his actions.
