I actually still have a note to look up why 1001 Arabian nights had a female hero in the story when Arabia was well into the first stages of gender oppression and why it praised educated women when at the time women weren't encouraged to be educated for quite a while. My history professor and I were both wondering that LAST semester... I've just been too lazy.
