We'd been driving for about a day, a lot of the time in silence, but it wasn’t awkward silence, it was a comfortable silence, just two people embracing the fact they aren’t alone in this world. We had small talk now and then, but it was only really about our lives before the Virus struck, I mean, what else was there to talk about? I did learn that Bob used to work for the FBI but got made redundant after he was injured and they needed someone of full health, he moved to the outskirts of New York, borderline Jersey and lived with his pregnant wife. When the first few people started to get infected it wasn’t his wife that turned, it was the baby, and it well…started consuming her from the inside, they agreed it was best for Bob to kill her before she turned too and before the Baby could ‘escape’ it was a horrific story, and it must be a horrible burden to bare but he’s surviving, and he’s surviving for them, you wouldn’t think people would divulge into their personal lives so quickly after meeting them, but when you’ve been on your own for months, fighting for survival, talking is the one thing you don’t really do, so your worries are kept to yourself, haunting you.

Bob pulled into a car park of an abandoned Wal-Mart, he jumped out of the car and opened the trunk, out of curiosity I too got out of the car and followed him round to the trunk, Bob was now holding an axe that would initially be used by fire fighters, and his trunk was full of other some random objects that could kill a zombie if used in the right way. “Is that a guitar?” I questioned pointing to the black case at the back of the trunk, Bob nodded “Yeah it is, but I’d never use that to kill a zombie, that was my wife’s, but anyway pick your weapon kiddo.” I glanced at the taller man in sympathy and nodded in understanding, I then turned back to the trunk and picked up the Baseball bat that was lying Just in front of the guitar case, Bob nodded and he shut the trunk, he locked the car and we headed toward the entrance to the store “Hey, what are we doing here anyway?” I inquired, Bob turned and shook his head “well I aint got enough supplies for two people, I’ll need to get more if you’re tagging along…” he trailed off as we walked into the unearthly silent store, it was too quiet, not a sound was being made, not even by Bob and I. we walked along the top of the first few isles, nothing. Nothing but silence…

Bob then picked up a can of beans from the shelf next to him and threw it into the isle in front of us, letting the sound of the tin against the hard floor echo throughout the store, and no more than ten seconds later there were four zombies investigating the sound “You take the two on the left, I’ll take the two on the right, got it?” Bob whispered, I nodded and Bob whistled loudly diverting the zombie’s attention to us, they ran at us with some speed.
“Frank, duck.” Bob stated quickly, I did as he said and the next thing I saw was his axe flying above my head and through the throat of one of the smaller zombies, I stood up again after I’d made sure bob wasn’t going to swing his axe again, and decided it was time I killed another zombie, this guy was pretty big, he was probably about 5ft9 which was a considerable amount taller than me and he was well built too, but I didn’t care, I ran passed him making him turn around to face me, but before he turned completely I’d smashed his skull with my bat and his head went crashing into the shelves next to him, the corpse collapsed onto the floor and I hit his head again a few more times to be certain he was really dead, I did the same thing to the other zombie and Bob was now picking up giant packs of chips and other foods when I heard the creak of a door from the other side of the store, I looked at Bob who had stopped in his tracks and was looking back at me, we stayed silent for a few moments until we heard another sound, a different sound, the sound of gunshots.

Bob threw the food into a carrier bag he’d picked up as we entered the store and we both ran toward the sound side by side, hoping it was someone who was alive, there’s strength in numbers, and knowing we weren’t alone meant we could stick together. As we ran we heard six or seven more gun shots, that gun must have been empty by now, or near to it, when we saw the source of the noise there was a skinny mousy brown haired boy, not much younger than me standing in front of a body and fending off a swarm of zombie’s in the parking lot. Bob glanced over to the truck, it was okay, no zombie’s over there, He ran over to the young boy and began to help him with the zombies that were approaching in all directions “Frank! Get your ass over here!” I followed his orders, but there wasn’t much I could do with a baseball bat that didn’t involve getting in the way of the gun fire, but soon the younger boy spoke up “Hey, can you check on him, a zombie knocked him out, but I’m not sure if he’s been bitten or not.” he said shakily, I nodded, and knelt down in between Bob and the new stranger to check on the unconscious man’s condition, I checked his limbs, chest, neck and even head but there was no sign of a bite, I lifted his head so he was sitting up and felt a warm liquid running across my fingers I looked down to the ground where the man’s head was just lying to see a small puddle of the scarlet liquid, I took my misfits hoodie off and placed it under his head as some kind of cushion and bandage for the time being. I wiped the raven hair from the man’s face to see he wasn’t a man, he appeared to be maybe a few years older than me, but definitely can’t be older than early twenties, his skin was pale, very pale in contrast with his hair, the rise and fall of his chest showed he was still breathing but we couldn’t stay out here much longer, I glanced up at Bob who was looking down at me “we need to get to the truck…” I stated Bob nodded; I glanced over to the truck, which was on the other side of the parking lot, when the zombie’s were at some kind of distance away from us, Bob took the gun of the strange boy and swapped it with my baseball bat and handing me the weapon. “Lift the guy with one arm, shoot with the other, hey mouse, keep close.” Bob stated to the younger boy, we stayed in this little ‘formation’ until we got to the truck, Bob left me trying to support the unconscious guy alone as he fumbled around trying to unlock the car, when it was unlocked the younger boy clambered into the from passenger seat, leaving me to climb into the back with the other guy. Once we’d made sure the car was actually zombie free, Bob started the engine and hit the gas.

We were driving for around half an hour before Bob decided to try and spark conversation with the young boy, he was shaking and his cheeks were stained with tears. “So how did you find yourself in that situation back there kiddo?” Bob asked, the young boy turned to look back at the other guy who was unconscious and leaning against my shoulder and then back to Bob “well, my brother and I, we were driving, looking for a place to stop for a refill on supplies before we carried on our journey, when we got to Wal-Mart, we were going to go in through the back, but there were Zombies everywhere, one of them was coming at me but my brother pushed me out of the way, the zombie kind of jumped on him knocking him to the floor and knocking the gun out of his hands, so I picked it up and shot the zombie, but that attracted the attention of the others, and well then you guys came out of nowhere and saved our asses.” After that it was silent again for a few minutes until I decided it was time to speak “So what’s your name? I’m Frank and that’s Bob.” I asked in a friendly manner, the boy smiled lightly “I’m Mikey, and that lump that’s squashing you is my brother Gerard.” I smiled at him and the unconscious man wrapped his arm around my stomach, my eyes widened at the unusual contact and Mikey started to giggle still looking at me and his brother “He probably thinks you’re me, he’s a very clingy person when he’s asleep.” I stayed silent but nodded and swept more of the raven hair from Gerard’s face causing him to bury his face into my chest, causing Mikey to laugh more; I wasn’t used to this kind of contact with anyone, especially a guy, I pushed the awkward thoughts from my mind and continued to chat with Mikey.

“So where are you heading?” Mikey asked, his eyes filled with curiosity, I shrugged this time not being sure where I was going “I was heading to Jersey, but then I met Bob and decided there’s strength in numbers, so I stuck with him, now we just drive to survive.” Mikey nodded in understanding “How about you?” I added quickly Mikey smiled softly but then his eyes fell onto his brother before sighing deeply “We’ve been running for as long as I can remember, even before the Virus, just running, just surviving.” His eyes began to glisten as the tears started to form, I decided to not ask why they’d been running and Bob was thinking the same thing, but I couldn’t help but wonder, what were they running from?
