After a while it began to get dark, and Fen suggested trying to find an inn.
"There are none," Jasper replied. "There's nothing on this road until you get to the water's edge."
"Then what's that?" Rain asked. She pointed to a dim light in the distance.
"It's not what it looks like. The shape-shifters are clever here. They make it look like it's a nice comfortable inn, then they slaughter travelers in their sleep. Trust me, it's not easy to get out."
"Shape-shifters?" Fen said. "I thought you said these woods were safe!"
He stopped and turned to her. "Compared to the rest of Ett, it's practically a kindergarten class."
"A what?" They both hadn't heard the word before.
"Nevermind. It's from the place where I grew up."
"Where are you from?" Rain asked. He didn't seem to be from Ett, and he obviously wasn't Gellan.
He turned and continued walking without answering.
"He can't remember," Fen explained. "Every now and then he remembers a random detail, like just now, but none of it ever makes sense."
