So far most of this story makes little sense as it appears to be make up of flashbacks with very little to connect them together in a coherent tale.
I think you need to fill in some of the gaps so that the readers have a better understanding of what has happened.

It's a Alternate History so it will take another chapter or two to give you firm ground. Since you've mentioned it, I'll try to ensure that the next few chapters are a bit more liner, at least until readers have some firm footing.
