Harry is perhaps a bit mature, but only a bit. A student can stand up to a teacher if his family or social background teaches him to do so. Voice of experience...a couple of years older than Harry is in the story.
Btw, the school is liable for what its agent..Snape..did. So is Snape, but you can play with giving the bill to the Hogwarts Board of Governors if Snape refuses to pay.
