Hmm, if I were to follow Occam's Razor, all things being equal the simplest solution is lost often the correct one, then I would say that Ginny came through the fire found Ron beating Hermione and stopped him, however in the fight they both recieved fatal wounds. Too simple.
The next step would be that Ginny tried to stop Ron, Ron killed her, Hermione got hold of Ginny's wand and killed Ron in self defense. Still a tad too simple.
How about a third party is involved, they have been repeatedly raping, beating and obliviating Hermione over the years, maybe even while polyjuiced as Ron. Ron too gets obliviated, perhaps to aid in the coverup. One day Ron comes home and sees it going on, there is a struggle in which Ron is killed. Ginny comes to the rescue but gets killed as well. Knowing that Harry will be there any second the killer flees before he can finish off Hermione. Sounds good but who is it?
It could always be Draco, he's such a bastard. It could also be Krum which would justify Ron's jealousy of him. But then again, Neville took down that Auror awfully easily didn't he?
I can't wait to see what happens next.
Author's response
Okay, have you been reading my outline? Occam's Razor is, indeed, an element in this story - it's also a red herring.
There are plots within plots here, and you are the closest, so far, to sussing it out. Good on you!
Of course, now I will be forced to re-write the ending. . .
