I think you have to write Dumbledore either as a MOB or a MEB (Evil). I think MOB is about right, always from the 'best' of motives, of course.
If Harry had been able to pull this trick (as he does in Sorcerer's Apprentice, although he isn't on scene at Hogwarts), Snape would have become more obsessed with teaching 'the Boy' a lesson. Here, he MIGHT be able to ignore Neville

I tried to write Albus as a MOB, but it didn't fit this story, so I let the character be.
And, I have to admit, you've totally lost me with your second paragraph.
