Theoritically, he could milk McGonnegal for everything magical, go with her to Diagon Alley, buy a ton of books and then tell her the Muggle world holds more opportunities...
Then again, with that plotline, it would be pretty hard for him to, plausibly, hook up with Hermione. Oh, well.

Mind reader you are. That's actually the direction I'm going in, but Dumbledore will put spokes in that plan right quick, landing him in Hogwarts.
