I am definitely in favor of Harry's and Hermione's friendship.
Part of the reason Hermione works so hard is that she is desperate for acknowledgment. Being closer to Harry would provide her with a dual acknowledgment (as friends, acknowledging her personality, and as rivals, acknowledging her skills) which would greatly appeal to her.
There's no rule prohibiting good friends from also being fierce competitors.
