I think the Tom found at that cave is the original article and might not be anywhere near as evil as some of the reviewers here think. Actually come to think of it, it is quite possible that the reason Voldemort is so evil is because he is a flawed homonculus.

Tommy Riddle isn’t evil at all.
You have the ability to imagine Harry Potter, who had an upbringing very similar to Tommy’s, brewing or charming or transfiguring something that incorporates all of his negativity, and then turns on him, trapping him for all time.
