I can only imagine what it's like, but in my mind I'm thinking that going to an AA meeting for the first time is like deciding to quit all over again. And admitting the problem to strangers is maybe the final stage in accepting there is a problem.

Yeah it really is fully admitting you have a problem that's for sure. In hindsight, that might have been real benefit.
