I think you have things moving too fast and too slow. Too fast to clean out Ron's things. Really, if he was possessed, perhaps there would be signs among his things. And where is the rest of the Weasley clan? And frankly, even if they would allow Harry to do the investigation - he should have a partner.
And there should be more of a concern about Hermione's safety - what if the possession was aimed at getting her killed off. At least new wards - and staying with Harry not at the crime scene.

Yes Ron was possessed, the manner of the possession left him in control most of the time, but alcohol, even small amounts, would allow the cog to take full control.
The rest of the Weasley Clan is there, in the background. We’ll see Bill shortly.
Harry is not going to leave Hermione unprotected, never fear.
