Yeah, I think the pair of them are devastated by what's happening, but if they only listen, they'll see Matthew is already making mistakes.
He referred to Pete's friends, now, depending on who he meant, would he not just use their names or even say 'our' friends. Maybe not if he's suddenly turned on them, but he has to be careful if he's not to give himself away.
