Fawkes has been helping Harry behind the scenes, but I wanted to get him away from Dumbledore, who I believe never deserved a phoenix. On the other hand, I really didn't want a supermagical-phoenix-bonded-Harry-who-cloud-do-nothing-wrong, type story. He's working his tail off, and needs all the help he can get.
