It stands decently as a one-shot but I could see this one developing a couple more chapters with adequate backstory to be explored.

Yes, there are going to be several more chapters to this story, and perhaps a sequel (What happens to Voldemort when he dies?).
As for how Harry died, it's all going to be explained in chapter 3.
