i think ben kenobi's robes were modeled after samurai hakama, which look a lot like skirts.

Yeah, Lucas had a great deal of interest in Kurosawa. He said that's where he decide on the Kendo style of bladework in all the movies. My point was that the uniform hadn't changed all that much.
