In terms of legal copyright, a character design is not a copyright. For example, I can sell stuff with Hello Kitty on it without calling it Hello Kitty. That's why knock off toys and stuff are legal.

I understand the legal terms because I studied media. You can change just change somethings title and it will be legal, but that doesn't stop professional companies from getting pissed off.
