It has been years, but didn't Ash find Pikachu? Professor Oak was out of starter pokemon and Ash saved Pikachu after he left the professor. That was kinda Ash's MO all his pokemon were injured or abandoned when he found them.
The story seems fine, but like Pikachu I doubt Evee would ever evolve.
